Hurricane Irene Puts Damper on Appleseed shoot,,, kind of,,,,, somewhat,,,, not totally,,,,
Burlington Flats clubhouse took on a Tornado Hit a few weeks back, with snapped trees, parts of them landing on the roof, not much damage there, got lucky,,, However with the other trees, weakend by the tornado, it was decided not to be outside on sunday when the storm hits,,, too many widow makers still in the trees that could become projectiles, this place is windy, and with storms such as what Irene is, this shoot turned into an indoor event for sunday,,,
Our Appleseed shoot this weekend,,,
Saturday was a Perfectly Perfect Appleseed, with the impending storm coming our way,
SBIT Odin, totally involved with his last SBIT Evaluation and I came up the contingency plans for this event, was just a simple plan,
Push a bit harder on Saturday to get ahead for Sunday, it worked rather well, we went in to the evening on Saturday, and it paid off for Sunday, But at 1150hrs, Sunday the lights went out, we had made the decision to come indoors on Sunday to keep the shoot going, I printed off reduced squares targets and AQT's Saturday night, as a back up to our fall back position in the club house, with the indoor range we could still keep shooting, as long as the lights stayed on, But they did not, but we had such an awesome group of students at this shoot, that we got alot of history done, an extensive Known Distance class done as well, answering and discussing any and all questions the students had,,, We even had a small Garand clinic under flash lights, discussed CMP purchases, 7th stepping on a grand scale, LitteMo our State Promotions Coordinator was here to lend insight as too what people can do for promoting our program,,,, it was not time wasted, however we would have liked to have done more shooting, because there was vast and I mean vast improvement in the shooters performance, we had scores up to 208 if we had the opportunity to shoot a few more targets, we could have easily had expert scores achieved, but as it turned out we made a few more Friends and range buddies, at B-Flats,,,
I would like to really say Thanks to everyone who came as students and instructors to this shoot,
We had a family of 4, one of which is K-Wolf on the forums and a NY Instructor, he brought with him his parents and sister to shoot while he worked the line, outstanding job Kevin, They had to leave back to the Buffalo area, to get ahead of the storm, good call on that one, 4.5 to 5hrs drive thru rain and wind is not fun for that distance, Especially on the NY Thruway, that highway can be very treacherous in storm conditions of any kind.
Kathy, Jeff, and Katie, folks, you are more than welcome at our shoots anytime, by the way Throop,NY is a bit closer to you, I will be there 10-11 Sept, if you feel so inclined to join us, please do, Fine Americans here folks, with Kathy cooking a great stew for us Saturday night, That saved us some driving time going to supper, and more time to relax and reflect on the day and plan for Sunday, I just wished this storm would have waited a day longer to get here, or not even come at all...
A father and son team from this area, John and Brad,,, Brad being 12 years old and did a fantastic job, John his father Going for the Rifleman Opportunity Card, he will be back, these two gentlemen are welcome to my line anytime,,,
Eric J.,,,, Who owns The Shootin'Shed GunShop and Range in West Winfield, NY,,, Is our own 7th stepper on a level that fills this line no less than 70% on any given shoot, With every visit to his shop you are also getting an Appleseed Presentation that not too many businesses would have the time to do, but he is an Appleseeder, and this shoot proved no different, shooting another expert score of 221, with a tricked out Tactical Solutions 10/22 clone, that is a work of art,,, I will have to get over to his place to get a picture of it and post it, because I forgot to get one while it was on the line, Thank you Eric for all you do for this country and Appleseed,,,, and of course Burlington Flats Fish and Game Club as well,,,
Eric's Grandson,,,,
AwesomeAustin,,,, was here too, NY's youngest Instructor at 13 yrs of age, he did an Outsanding job with John's son Brad, and when Brad was settled, he would help out with other students and or confir with me about teaching techniques, and ways to apply them, he is truly a joy to work with, he is also a Very Accomplished shooter in his own right, Member of our Junior Rifle Team, F- Class shooter, Service Rifle shooter,,, He is more than just an asset, He is a dedicated Appleseeder and Instructor anyone would be proud to be working the line with,,, Outstanding Job Austin
Frank and Lisa,,,
Husband and Wife team, I just enjoy having complete families at these shoots, It is really what holds our country together, Both of these fine Americans did a most Outstanding job, Both of them being Veterans,,, And now Appleseeders, who know very well what they are about, Frank shooting a very respectable 208 for a high on Saturday, and his wife doing very well with groups that will make for some nice shooting at her next event,,, Thank you for being here, Franks HRA Garand was the specimen in our Garand clinic by flash light,,, It gauged excellent across the board with my gauges,,, it will be a fine shooter, and pretty too,,, I hope I got off all the drool, I get excited around these here rifles,,,,
Then we have Jackie,
Just an absolute joy to have at our events, she is a 2 time Appleseeder, with an attitude that says I just love this, she learns well, has a great time, and always has a smile that really makes your day, when I ask her how she did when coming back from reading her target, she says not as good as last time, but with a smile on her face,,, she does not let that get her down, because she knows what she can do, her scores are very respectable and will be a Rifleman very soon, Keep up the good work, you are welcome here anytime Jackie,,, Hope your brother is feeling better, and Fred, Sir, you have done a Great job with your daughter,,, I would like to see you back here as well,,, Thank You,,,,
Our Instructors did an outstanding job, TheMrs, passed her IIT3 PC, with an Outstanding IMC presentation that was Spot On,,,, Congratulations Sue, she was pretty busy this weekend as were all of us with the extra time put in on Saturday we even got in 4 stage by stage AQT's,,,,
But as stated, before Sunday was not a total loss be any means, we have more Patriots, that know very well what they are about.
The weather may have affected our shooting time but it did not affect the camaraderie that was present this shoot,,,
When you come to Burlington Flats, you are coming home,,,
I will close for the time being to let others chime in,,,
Pictures and more to follow in the morning,,,
Thanks Again to everyone for letting me be a part of this organization, it is truly the one thing, that, I believe is doing the most good, for this country, at this time.

Modified to add;
How could I have forgotten Ethan L. ( CountryBoy243) even though he could not be here for Saturday, he jumped right in Sunday Morning to help out on the line, even though with the loss of power at the club he did not waste any time, he is a great young man that is also a joy to have with us, Great Job Ethan, see you soon,,
This was an eventful weekend thanks to Irene. As Sgtrock said we pushed a little harder on Saturday due to the weather forecasts for today. Thankfully we did as the weather pushed us indoors and eventually forced us to cease shooting. A rifleman persists and adapts and that is what we did at this shoot.
When the power went out we hit did more classroom instruction. While I would have loved to have done more practical work; the shooters left this shoot with a superb foundation for future range days and Appleseeds. All of the shooters this weekend showed the attitude of a rifleman and all of them improved greatly on Saturday, as their small group sizes on Sunday morning showed. I hope to see all of them back at an Appleseed in the near future.
To the shooters: Thank you for your attention and persistence. Fine Americans like you are the reason why I keep doing these shoots. You are the reason why despite the weather this was a great weekend to be at an Appleseed.
Kathy, thank you for that delicious stew you provided us on Saturday night.
Awesome Austin: you lived up to your screen name. You did an awesome job this weekend. You are a very big asset to this program. The shooters were lucky you were here as an instructor.
The Mrs. Congratulations on your promotion; you earned it.
Little Mo, K-Wolf, CountryBoy: Thank you for your dedication and hard work this weekend. You made this a successful weekend.
Well done, as always at Burlington Flats. I know first hand how nasty the weather can be on top of the hill - and you folks just took the 'Tropical Storm' in stride. Thank you to the shooters and instructors alike for braving one of the worst storms of its kind to hit central NY in well over half a century.

Nice Job Guys... as usual. Congrats Odin!

It is always a pleasure for me to come out to Burlington Flats and work with the great Americans this event produces. Unfortunately my family and I could only stay for Saturday due to the incoming Hurricane. I was very impressed by the marked improvement by the end of day 1 with a huge improvement in the Redcoat targets. I know my little sister Katie had a great time and now she wants her own ruger but with a purple stock... I may have created a monster. She seemed to grasp the instruction very well, especially since she has never shot this particular rifle before. I still have to score her AQT scores but those will be posted soon Stoner ;) I have had an opportunity to work with Odin, LittleMo, The Mrs. and sgtrock before but this was my first time working with AwesomeAustin. He is a great young American with a great future ahead of him. The whole time I was there, he was constantly working with Brad and was doing a wonderful job. To everyone else, I'm sorry I couldn't be there for Sunday, but i hope everything went well and great job to everyone. I hope to see you along the trail.
Many thanks to everyone for a very enjoyable and enlightening experience. My wife Lisa and I learned quite a bit and are looking forward to getting out on the range and putting things into practice. I'm also looking forward to bringing my son to the next B Flats Appleseed in October. Let's hope the weather doesn't turn uber nasty like it did this time! In the meantime, I will certainly do my part in getting the word out about this excellent program.
You guys are all great!
Frank
Thank you Frank
It was a pleasure to have you folks with us, if you are ever in town let me know, and we could do a range day, either here at B-Flats or at The Shootin'Shed, your call,,,
Check your in box, I sent you a PM, on some info I have that I think you will like,

Awesome weekend...and another memorable trip to Burlington Flats. ;) It is always an adventure when we come out for a visit. :D
We took on Irene after the shoot in the trailer, and she rocked us good. It took what is usually an hour and 40 min. trip from/to home about 9 hours on Monday. But it was so much worth the trip!! We had a great chance to meet great people, as always at Burlington Flats. Every shooter that could, returned on Sunday despite miserable conditions. Irene didn't scare these great Americans away.
As Stoner said, we pushed pretty hard on Saturday to try and get as much in as possible, and these great people were right there with us. Taking in all that was shared and putting it to good use. When given a choice to shoot another AQT or the final Saturday red coat.....despite being pushed hard all day long....all agreed they wanted another AQT. Yes, despite being beaten up all day, and drinking from a fire hose.....they dug deep and showed their dedication. I always watch the faces of the shooters when they hear the history. To a person they listened attentively. You could almost see the stirring of their souls.
So again thank you again for a wonderful weekend. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.
Sue
Hey Guys, I was registered for this weekend but because of Irene and my job (part of which is servicing e911 and Public Safety Communications systems in Otsego and Madison counties) I was on call and plenty busy making sure when you dialed 911, someone was there to help you.
I will be there in October, hopefully with several folks I have 7th stepped to.
Sgt Rock and Odin, I missed seeing you guys this weekend. Sounds like I missed out on a large time.
See you in October!!
PS; I shot one reduced AQT practice target on Wednesday and scored 226!! WooHoo!
Peace, Out
The Postman
Hey Postman
I've been wondering where you were hiding, yea come on out when you get a chance,
This was a very good shoot we had here,,, A little hurricane activity but we fared well, and had a great time with great people.
If you are so inclined i will be at Throop, NY 10-11 Sep if you care to make the drive, it is a rustic place with primitive camping, It will be a good time. Just a few miles from Auburn, NY guaranteed to rain,,,
Thank you for presence at our past events, looking forward to more
sgtrock aka Stoner
Hey sgtrock,
I finally got around to it and scored my little sister's AQTs. She had a scores of 90, 86, and 104. For her first time shooting this is not bad at all and now we have her hooked. Hopefully i can get her out to more Appleseeds :)
K-Wolf
Great Job K-Wolf and Katie
If she is up to it, bring her to Throop, I would be more than glad to have her on the line, and don't forget to let your mom and Jeff know, they are welcome as well,,,
Best Regards
sgtrock aka Stoner
Hey Sgt. Rock!! I will try to make Sunday at Throop, as I am NOT on call that weekend . . It will be good to hear your distinctive and authoritative voice on the firing line!!!
Sir, your example taking the lead on the line and telling the history inspires me.
I don't know what I like more, shooting the AQT or hearing the history of the founding of this great nation!!!
Sir, since I was unable to attend the event I registered for at BF . . . is there any way I can apply that registration fee to another Appleseed??
See you soon Sarge!!!
BTW, my son, SFC Nathan Logan, is deployed on his third combat tour in Afghanistan, this time as as a SECFOR fire team leader, please pray for his safe return to us.
Another successfull event at Burlington Flats! The students were eager to learn and apply what they were taught by a great instructor crew. Unfortunately hurricane "Irene" visited us on Sunday keeping the students off the range, but also fortunately because the students received excellent classroom instruction. The shooting skills were improving before the power went out.
Congratulations to Odin and to The Mrs.! Thank you to Burlington Flats Fish and Game Club, and of course a huge thank you to the dedicated students! O0
Pictures to follow.

Burlington Flats hosts another successful Project Appleseed event.
