Title: AR services needed
Post by: bedford on August 24, 2011, 10:12:43 AM
Hi!

I need someone who can drill & ream a standard AR A1 front sight base. My barrel is already drilled, as it had the standard sight on it when I bought it.  I had taken the front sight off, and then lost  :wall: the sight. If someone also wants to trade a drilled sight base (if you have one of those A1 kits with new barrels) for my new one that wood be great. It is for an A1 profile barrel, so it needs the thinner .625 barrel.

I also need someone to work on my Doublestar 2 stage trigger. It has a nice pull, but is just too heavy. It has three settings for a spring by the sear, but adjusting them makes no difference.  The trigger looks a lot different than the RRA triggers. I also have a few RRA triggers that could use some work, and I am looking for someone who can apply Duracoat (or something similar).

If anyone can do these things at a fair price, I'd love to keep it in the Appleseed community.

Thanks!

Bedford

Bill Springfield does good trigger work.

ADCO can probably take care of the FSB for you.

Common off-the-shelf earthtone colors at Wal-mart or K-mart worked for us.  Follow up with coat of clear  for durability.  Plenty of info, opinions, advice out there on how to get a camo pattern.

As you throw paint, try to find local brush, grasses, weeds, etc. with which you would want to "blend in."

Have fun making your own pattern.

As FB said, Krylon is the way to go.

It may take a little liquid courage to push that nozzle the first time.... but after that, there's no such thing as a black rifle anymore!

Carbine in 5.45X39 Russian with krylon.  Base coat was the flat brown color, jaggedly torn strips of masking tape applied when the brown paint (two light coats) was dry.  Top color is the flat OD green color.  Tape strips pulled off when the green was dry.

24" barreled vARmint rifle.  Base coat was (again) the flat brown krylon camo paint.  The other colors/shapes are also krylon flat camo paint made with the stencil in the camo paint kit.

Thought I had pictures of my 20" HBAR clone somewhere but can't seem to find them.

If you don't like the look you end up with you can remove the paint with carb. cleaner a tooth brush and a rag.  Just spray, rub with a rag while wet or scrub with the tooth brush if you get a stubborn spot in knurling or checkering.

Degrease the outside surfaces with rubbing alcohol and a lint free rag (do it twice to make sure you get it all off) and paint.

Here's a picture of Faith (my 20" Colt) with a coat or two of Krylon. Me and Fireman Bill had a few beverages one day, set the rifles on an old skid and then hit 'em with a coat of one color, had a beverage (while that coat dried) hit it with the next color, and so on and so forth.

One tip, stick a foam earplug in the barrel and tape over any optics. For ARs, put the two peeps in kind of a "V" position so you hit both sides. Keep in mind you'll need a few mags camo'd as well and if you have acccessories like scope caps, don't forget to hit the insides.

It's hard the first time because we're so conditioned to "not mess it up" we forget it's just a simple machine that's the wrong color. Paint doesn't hurt it. You paint everything else that you don't want to rust, don't you?

Saw someone at a recent shoot do a coat of light brown, then lay pine needles over and do a coat of light green. Looked pretty good to me!

Good luck.
