Title: Marlin 795 Ammo Question
Post by: LTCSZ on July 30, 2011, 02:35:28 PM
Picked up my new Marlin 795 rifle yesterday...Beautiful...
Now I have a question...(I know this type of question is "iffy", but here goes)...Could some of you who shoot 795's share with me what ammo brand seems to shoot best for you in the 795? I know every rifle is different, but I also know that some rifles just will not shoot certain brands of ammo...I need to purchase some bricks of 22 ammo to start getting the 795 sighted in, but I don't want to buy junk that will give me trouble from the start...Thanks for the advice...

Steve
I just realized there is an "ammo" section here on the forum...Posting there...Sorry about that...Learning!

the 550 box of federal from walmart works just fine

Ive used every imaginable brand of ammo out of my 795 and have never had a problem outside of normal .22 ammo issues (bad primers, etc)

Best thing to do is to buy a couple different types and run it through to really see what YOUR rifle will do, but they dont tend to have issues and they arent picky.

The only thing that stopped working on my were the CB's after I did some trigger work.  The hammer just didnt hit the hard primers hard enough, but thats why I've got my Marlin 80 G!  :---

+1 On this, Federal Bulk has never caused a problem in my 795.

+2 on this.  Works great.  Only have trouble is I put pressure on magazine since it tends to sit against my hand.  If I angle my hand out so I am not touching the mag - this ammo works great.  Only had 1 misfire (bad primer) last appleseed.

CCI Blazer -  10x50=500 round bricks were good in just about everything

they are consistent, accurate, feed, fire  &  eject  just fine  -  in pretty much every firearm I've used them in.

$17.49 a brick

Federal Bulk and Federal 50 round boxed.  No issues.

I stopped at Cabela's in Ft. Worth this afternoon and they had the federal Blue Box 525 packs for $16.49.  I got 5 boxes.   :---

They don't have that deal online, but they do have 4 boxes in an ammo can for $85.  I tried to post in a link to it, but it was about 500 meters long...  Just look for Federal bulk on Cabelas.com

Both of my Marlin 795s prefer Federal Maroon Bulk from Walmart.  They'll also shoot well with Federal Automatch.

They will not run with Remington Bulk or Winchester bulk.

As you cas see from all the helpful posts - folks are telling you what works well in their rifles and they don't all use the same brand of ammo.

You said you realized different rifles are different (and you are absolutely right).  You've been given several examples of ammo brands/types that folks have found work well in their Marlin rifles.

Now, my only advise would be that there is no reason to buy $30 a brick target ammo if $18 a brick bulk ammo shoots well enough to get the job done.  I've never used hollow points to small game hunt with because the solids work just as well when you hit the squirrel/rabbit in the head/neck.  I don't use match ammo to plink with because in my Ruger Mk1 and my old Winchester bolt action rifles Remington Thunderbolts shoot as well as anything else I ever shot.  My Ruger 10/22 really likes the bulk Remington Golden Bullets from Walmart and will shoot dime sized 25 meter groups when the shooter is up to it.  My Ceiner .22 conversion for AR's like Golden Bullets as well.  My CMMG .22 conversion kit likes the Federal bulk pack from WalMart.

Take the range time to do some experimenting with different brands/types of .22 ammo.  Try what has been recommended and then try some "outside the box".  If your rifle shoots cheaper ammo pretty well then you can buy more ammo (I store mine in surplus GI .50 caliber ammo cans).

I started out with CCI MiniMags because they are one of the brands recommended in the Marlin 795 Owner's Manual.  They put ten rounds into one hole you can cover with a dime at 25 meters.  I have run 500+ rounds of them through my and my Grandson's 795s without cleaning with zero issues.  I was so pleased that I just have not bothered to try anything else even though I am a big fan of the Federal bulk stuff.  That said, Old Dog is right on with his advice above.

I'll second the advice of Old Dog: ideally, you should try a variety of ammunition, see what your rifle likes, and make a choice after that.

That said, I've run about 2000 rounds of Walmart Federal Bulk Pack through my 795, and can recall three stoppages, all three out of a filthy rifle. I pick up a box on my way to an event, and call it a day!

One thing I would recommend is a cleaning after day one, no matter what ammo you choose: it'll help cut down on day two stoppages, and it'll probably help your inherent accuracy as well!

You already made the right call with the 795 vs the 10/22.... pause for the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the difference between sub sonic and super sonic ammunition.  Depending on how you intend to employ your rifle, some venues will only allow sub sonic ammunition.   While my 795's will all shoot super sonics of any flavor, sub sonics haven't proven so reliable.  I had a lot of primer issues with CCI subsonics, 1 in 10 failure rate in fact, but that was just my experience with one purchase from walmart.  Could just be a bad batch, but I'm not going back to the CCI's just the same.

The bulk packs are the best thing smok'n for super sonic .22 ammunition, Winchester, Federal, either or.

Ive had high failure rates in nearly every brand of sub sonic in all my .22's.  I shot a TON of sub sonic and shorts out of my Marlin 80 G, which is a bolt action .22 and doesnt miss a beat, and 1 in 10 is about what I expect as average for most sub sonic ammo, with some being as high as 2-3 of 10.

I think its just the nature of the beast, but I've shot literaly thousands of rounds of shorts and sub's with almost that exact ratio across the board.

what ammo brand seems to shoot best for you in the 795?

For my rifle: either Federal "maroon box" bulk pack or Remington Golden Bullet.

As noted by NMMI9100, the Remington (or any other brand) may not even function in all rifles.  YMMV, best of luck.

Like a lot of those posting above, my three 795s work well with Fed Bulk, but I get it in the blue box from Cabellas on sale cheaper than Wallyworld.  I tried some Aquila sub-sonic because I had it laying around and about 20% wouldn't cycle the bolt.

One other thing to consider is how dirty yours can get before it starts to FTF or FTE.  I have one that will get only about 150 rounds through it before I need to run a boresnake through it and spray some OneShot cleaner & lube in the receiver.  The other two will go 300-400 rounds before I need to clean them.  Keep a boresnake and cleaner/lube handy if yours does the same.  A day at the Appleseed line can get any rifle pretty dirty.

Failures to extract unfired rounds will indicate a dirty bolt face.  It's headspacing on the grime, and not inside the extractor until it's blown back.

Federal Automatch and CCI run cleaner than some of the others.  For me, Automatch  (at $18/350) and CCI MiniMag (at $7/100) were the best price / performance (can make one ragged hole off a rest).  The true match stuff did better, the faster ammo did worse.  Play with the bulk stuff and find what you like.

CCI Blazera.  The Mini-Mags work quite well, but the Blazers are cheaper and shoot a tad tighter.  Bricks run $15 on sale from time to time.

My two Marlin 795s both like Walmart Federal bulk pack (maroon & black box).  They won't shoot Remington bulk for anything.

CCI "Mini-Mag" 22 LR Copper plated round nose works wonders for my 795. Federal Bulk works fine to but CCI is more accurate for me. CCI costs about $7.50 per 100 rounds here in IL.

Howdy All,

I have been using CCI Blazer 40gn Round nose lead in all my .22s for years.
Marlin 795 x4,
Ruger 10/22
Marlin model 60 from 1973.
I use the 795's as loaners, will go through over 700 rounds without a hitch and continuiously put 10 through the Murphy's Square from prone with a sling.

I usually find them online for about $159.00/5000 Plus shipping.

another vote for cci minimag, no need to post but wanted to mention another:  I had a great Appleseed with Wolf MT.  It cycled the action just fine but I can get tiny groups with it like you'd expect from subsonic.  It's not super pricey, either.  I'll prob practice with bulk but when a score is on the line I'll go with Wolf.

Subsonics aren't recommended for semiautos due to lack of energy to cycle the bolt.
Hypervelocity rounds aren't recommended for the opposite reason - slams the bolt back too hard and can lead to component damage, particularly the buffer and recoil spring in the 795.
Get your favorite bulk box and have at it.

+1 on the Wolf, American Eagle and Blazers work well also. Definitely not the Remington Cyclones though, to much powder, lots of misfires and it builds up on the inside. Federals don't either. It puts up with Winchester although they aren't the best. :~

CCI minimag round nose are on sale at Midway for about $5.50/100 if you buy 500, even less for 1000. Jerry, why didn't you put some of those trouble free 795's on the line this weekend? The other drove us nuts! :).........O.L.

I do Walmart Federal HP and only have had a few problems w/ failure to eject when the rifle is freshly cleaned and oiled. Figure that out. Once 20-40 rds are through it stops. Note to self, stop cleaning the thing so much and it works better. Hehehe, this flies in the face of my neurotic cleaning schedule for all firearms.

The cheapest rifle should run the cheapest ammo, right?

Bulk packs (Federal, Winchester, Blazer, etc.) seem to work fine in every rifle I've seen out on the line.

THAT'S NOT TRUE, SLIM!  THAT IS NOT TRUE!  THAT IS A LIE!

The ONLY way to achieve a Rifleman score is to have a rifle fit specifically to you shooting high quality ammo.   ::)

Hundreds upon hundreds of stories from our lines about people grabbing rack rifles and bulk ammo and just laying down and shooting Rifleman scores are embellished phantoms.  People need to get fancy rifles and trick them out as much as possible to become Rifleman.  Its that simple.

Clean is always good, but watch that you're not "over-oiling" - doesn't take much with the 795.

One thing I really love about Appleseed is we don't sweat the small stuff. I don't have to worry about how many grains of powder are in which case and using what bullets and really, I don't even have to get into the muzzle velocity, twist rates, barrel lengths, etc., except to know "add a little more... add a little less."

When I hear people talk about temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, etc., I kind of chuckle. "You want me to go get that 10-year-old girl to show you how to make that shot?"

Remember folks, we're not shooting the X at 1,000. We're shooting a 4 MOA target at 500. Rack-grade rifle, surplus ball, and the SKILLS of a Rifleman.

You have to set up your LTR so you can learn the basics. But keep in mind, you learn the basics with a Louisville Slugger. It doesn't matter if it's the $10, short wooden T-ball bat or if it's the $185 ceramic TPX. Without the basics, you still can't hit homeruns. And you can learn to hit homeruns with the $10 bat just as well as you can with the $185 model.

It's certainly nice to have the background esoteric knowledge, but Slim is right on that we are teaching fundamentals of field craft and the extreme basics of making the shot with basic materials.  I had a security tactical officer in a recent AS that was shooting a "super-whompadyne" 10/22 off SANDBAGS.  He was shooting one-hole groups at 25m, and I sort of challenged him after one sighting square when I said: "excellent grouping! Your rifle is phenominal - now what can YOU do with it?"
