Title: AR Wood hardware
Post by: oladcock on July 23, 2011, 09:00:45 PM
Hey guys, everyone has seen Rebecca's promo poster, well got me a set but I'm still ugly. Finally got to shoot it today. Didn't see or notice any difference, hammered a couple 5 spots then ran a Hit's Count clean. The stock is a bit short for my 6'4" frame, had a slip-on butt over the plastic stock and looks like I'll need to do that with this one as well. The cheek pads are great and the big plus....The wood is touchable after laying in the sun! That's a big deal in this neck of the woods.

The fit and finish is outstanding. I had no trouble pulling the ugly stuff off and installing the new stock, grip, and forearm. PM "Castle Mountain" if you want a set...O.L.

+1. I'm saving!

That wood stock is pretty, but how much does it weigh?

It was my intent to weigh the parts but when it got here, I was chomping at the bit to get it together and forgot to do so. General impression, little to no difference, maybe slightly heavier. Unless it's a gun you are going to hoof for miles, mass in a rifle is a good thing. That coolness when shooting it in the summer sun, it'll be warmer in the winter as well. I would not put these on a gun that will be used for high volume CQB, they have no heat sheild in the forearm, but neither do most of our wood stocked battle rifles and they don't as much air space or ventilation. I've run 30rnd mags pretty quick where the barrel is so hot you can't touch it with no ill effects. It's been fun taking it to the range, the first response is what the heck is that? It changes the look so much....O.L.

Just had to admire the stock,  If you want to extend the length of pull with out covering up that nice wood......  Try a DPMS stock extender, Midway item 613-589 $31.49 :  Works good with the regular stock and adds 1" to the LOP.  While your at it,  Try the Rite-pull grip adapter item 146-845 $25.99 .  Places your hand back about 3/4",  gives a better feel on the trigger/ grip position.  Makes  these plastic guns fit us manly men a little better.
I'm just waiting to see what you tape on that nice stock to get a good cheek weld.
Don't tell me you haven't been thinking on it.  I can see this morphing into a flattop with a low profile gas block.  Ahhh forget it, you wanted another rifle anyway.
see ya in a couple of weeks,
         Milt

I believe for this forearm to work you need the standard front sight, it can be modified (cut down) to act as just a gas block that holds the forearm

Don't tempt me Milt! LOL Thanks for the links. Already slapped a Limb Saver on her. I can't remember ever owning a rifle that fits me as well as this one does now, maybe I'll stop shooting so many 49's on stage one! LOL (Inside joke between me and milt)....O.L.
