Title: Good affordable trigger for the 10/22 from Cabela's
Post by: Norseman1 on July 19, 2011, 10:48:11 PM
I'm sure its offered other places, but, I just installed this couple of weeks ago and qualifed this last weekend.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Firearm-Components/Triggers|/pc/104792580/c/104717880/sc/104651280/Competition-Match-Hammer-Sear-Kit/734667.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fshooting-firearm-components-triggers%2F_%2FN-1100242%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104651280%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat104792580%253Bcat104717880&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat104792580%3Bcat104717880%3Bcat104651280 (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Firearm-Components/Triggers%7C/pc/104792580/c/104717880/sc/104651280/Competition-Match-Hammer-Sear-Kit/734667.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fshooting-firearm-components-triggers%2F_%2FN-1100242%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104651280%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat104792580%253Bcat104717880&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat104792580%3Bcat104717880%3Bcat104651280)

Its not a true "match" trigger like the more expensive ones.

For $65 + tax, it was worth it and made enough difference while standing (for me, at least).

Yep, Power Custom is good stuff. If you want compition, buy their adjustable sear instead. I just use the trigger, don't like them less than 3 1/2 #.

I thought about dropping the $$$ on a higher end trigger, but, after reading the reviews for it online as well as on rimfire central, I decided $65 was not that much money to sink into my 10/22.

After a few hundred more rounds, some cleaning and a follow up with some TW25B shooting grease, it runs like magic now.

I'd still like to go in and polish it up some with flitz or such, but, I realize there is not that much "tuning" to do with what I have now. Along with a better set of optics, I was able to hit "rifleman" 3 times in a row with the AQTs. (compared to the prior month where I was only able to muster a 139)

Anyhow, for those looking for a quick fix w/o spending anywhere near $100, this is one of those easy to remedy solutions that helps every shooter.

If you want to dress up your rifle, cool, but it does wander away from "rack grade" or stock rifle for becoming a rifleman.  To make it a better shooter to enjoy it more, I have no issue with.  To make it an easier rifle to score with, not so much.

Considering the 10/22 factory trigger is terrible, I think making it better isn't a bad idea at all. I've never tested one on a pull gauge, but it is real unfriendly. Got to be above 8 pounds, which is close to mil spec for an AR, I believe. [EDIT: a quick google search shows that the 10/22 standard trigger is between 9 and 10 lbs.

Yep, there is enough variation in mass production for some to be better than others along with the lawyers telling them to be above a certain amount to reduce their liablity. All 3 of ours aren't too bad with a bit of polish, clipping a loop or two off the hammer spring, and an over travel set screw on the trigger guard. No $$ involved, just a bit of time that produces noticeable improvements...O.L.

Problem with both the Volq. & PC trigger kits is that you'll wind up needing to add a heavier return spring to the trigger if you want to shoot in the CMP Rimfire Sporter, as either one will drop the trigger pull below the 3.5# minimum for that event. [DAMHIK] ;)

BTW, for anyone looking to build up a 10/22 from one of the post-2k10 units w/ the plastic trigger housing, Timney just announced a complete trigger housing & trigger group for lots less than you'd spend buying all the components separately.  :D Was just reading about it in the latest Am. Rifleman that arrived in yesterday's post...  O0

There in lies the issue with all rifles for any shooting event. There will be "gamers" out there who only live for the award and nothing more. Then there are those who come for the skills improvement and to learn.

I saw a person show up with a "space gun" at an event. He had obvious skill and was able to get Rifleman rather easily. But, he had a scope and custom barrel and stock. He was "playing for keeps" as some would say.

I guess I don't get too upset either way. Similar arguments can be made both for/against scopes. (which has been beat to death already)

What was the original intent/meaning of "rack grade"?....For most those were well engineered military rifles, not cheap mass produced sporting guns that are engineered mostly to keep costs down, not for reliablity, accuracy, or ergonomics. Rack grade and "off the shelf" are not the same thing. So I don't see a better trigger, better sights, or a different stock as "gaming the system" nor can anyone apply the term "rack grade" to anything that wasn't issued to front line troops.

But I know what you are saying, I have to smile when someone breaks out a souped up 10-22, bull barrel, fancy thumb hole stock, $200 trigger, and a scope you can see the rings of Saturn with. I plop down with a standard plain jane 10-22 that has had $5 worth of work to it, Tech Sights and shoot a group as tight or tighter than they do. Most of those extra $$$ makes little to no difference. Like the bull barrel, you can gain 90% of the perceived accuracy improvements of a bull barrel with a pound and a half of lead in the forearm of a standard! :)...O.L.

I learned long ago that the trigger is as important as any other part of the rifle.

The trigger swap resulted in my groups shrinking the most.

Having used a scoped 10/22 to get my badge, I am not one to say who is "gaming" and who is not... I used a scope because my eyes are not what they used to be. That, and the fact that my 10/22 has a stripped bolt hole where the tech-sights needs to be centered on.  >:(

A ~$60 trigger, a ~$35 scope, and a $15 sling and swivel is all it took for my 10/22.

There is no such thing as an easy 210.   A poor shooter is not going to be able to pick up a match rifle and magically shoot a 210. Let's not pretend that this is the case and that they are somehow cheating by using one.    We are wasting valuable time and effort by getting hung up on what equipment a shooter brings.  Perhaps they only own a "race gun".  Nobody should be insisting that they spend money on another rifle before they hear the message of April 19th 1775.   We need to keep our focus on the mission which is dependent on us growing the Instructor ranks.  If a shooter believes they need a race gun  to shoot rifleman and then becomes an instructor, they will soon learn that Rifleman can be shot with a factory 10/22 or 795.
Appleseed is a self improvement program as Fred has said over and over.  Let's give people this opportunity.

You can simply use the factory trigger return spring and still benefit from the lighter trigger pull with the new Volq. hammer and spring kit.  Just as I have not heard of people wearing out "plastic" semiauto hand guns, I have not heard of anyone wearing out the new style trigger housing on a 10/22.  Replacing them is an unnecessary solution to a nonexistent problem.
We had a woman shooter put 5 shots in a dime sized hole off-hand with a factory Ruger target rifle trigger (she did this only once but I have never seen this happen).  In prone she managed quarter sized groups on a regular basis.  This was her second Appleseed and after I pulled her target barrel off and installed a high round count used factory carbine barrel.  The target barrel was too heavy for her while shooting off-hand.

I happen to own one of these race guns. But the only way it's that way is because all of that stuff came on it when I bought it used.

I agree completely with olad on this one. There are way more rifles that have much better triggers then the 1022 off the shelf. Not to mention that the stock is vastly to short for most people. I'm 5'9'' and find it about two to three inches to short.

I'm 6'2" and I realllllly struggled with my box stock 10/22 in the prone.  I thought of getting one of those silly 'assault rifle' chassis with an adjustable buttstock, but don't want to spend more money than the rifle is worth.

As far as scopes...  only you can answer that question.  I would think, particularly at the 25M reduced target, a scope wouldn't be any more advantageous than peeps if you didn't have your breathing and sling technique down.

At my first AS earlier this month... I wore my glasses to shoot for the first time.  :P   If someone needs a scope to shoot with, I respect their decision; if they don't need it, they are only fooling themselves.

Oh, and as far as the OP goes... thanks!  I might look into that.... my 10/22 trigger feels about as crisp as a bag of mashed potatoes...

That's a great trigger kit. I've got a 10/22 converted to Mach2 with a $250 full Volquartson trigger set and this kit in my Liberty Ruger feels just as crisp. It's also a pretty quick and easy install.

I'm convinced it is a combination of the Lawyers and cheapening production that has given 10/22s this trigger.  My brother just bought a 10/22 custom,( cut checkering on walnut stock, still too SHORT) new old stock from a gunsmith, the factory trigger is 2 1/2 pounds.  The New carbine I ordered through the same gunsmith because I didn't have the extra $45 had a 5 31/2 pound trigger my other one has a 6 1/4 pound trigger!

I put the collapsible stocks on the to get them short enough for my daughters.  See Slippery Rock PA AAR.

I will check this out if a little time and work by me doesn't help the trigger.

Just my .02 worth.
Last  new 10/22 I bought was for my daughter.  Came with  Knoxx Blackhawk stock ( daughter is short and store was running a  sale if the two were bought together).  Disassembled , mounted swivel studs, techsights, reassembled,  grabbed daughter and off to the range.   Post target, prone, fire.  She could barely pull the *&%@ trigger.  So I tried it myself. I could barely pull the *&%@ trigger!!    Ordered and installed  Power Custom pins and bushings,  much better!!  Well worth the money.
