I've gotten dissatisfied with my old 10/22 stock. I find it pretty uncomfortable standing (I would prefer a flatter butt), and it is really loose around the action.
I'm looking for opinions on affordable stocks that work well for 10/22 LTRs. I think factors to consider are as follows (but please correct me if they don't make sense):
- Should work well with NDS irons or Tech Sights
- Should also work well with a scope
- Must be able to provide a good repeatable cheek weld (a flat comb parallel to the bore seems like it would be ideal)
- Must handle sling tension well
- 13.5" or longer LOP (I am 6'5" and the length of the standard stock is good after adding a thick Masen butt pad)
- I think I'd prefer a flattish butt (the pointy part of the butt pad on my current stock causes a lot of discomfort after prolonged practice standing)
- I think I want a stock that will freefloat a lightweight .920 bbl (e.g. Whistle Pig)
Anyone have any experience with the "Promag Archangel Deluxe Target Rifle" stock seen here: https://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=217060 ?
What about Hogue OM Synthetic stocks, like this one: https://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=665112 ?
Other suggestions?
I've never used the Archangel but I have a 10/22 with a bull barrel in the Hogue OM stock in ghilli green. I really like the slock, but it a little short for my taste. I could use it about 1/2" to 3/4" longer. A lot of reviews say it's not stiff at the forearm, but I've never had an issue with sling tension there.

My suggestion is head to a few more Appleseeds and "sample" every kind of different stock you see. Folks typically have no problem letting you shoulder their rifle and almost always offer to let you shoot it too.
I wish I had a dollar for every stock I've used.... (I'd be able to buy new stocks!)
The biggest thing with the 10/22 is finding the right fit for you. Don't order one until you've tried it. The two stocks you've posted are vastly different from one another since one is hard plastic with a pistol grip and the other is spongy rubber with a tradional cut. They will feel incredibly different in your hands and waaaay different when you go to shoot.
Borrow one from someone at your next event and try it out. The Hogues are pretty common and you should be able to get a loaner. The Archangels are a little less common but you can try a pistol gripped Tapco or similar at just about every event.
Try before you buy!
I have a black Hogue overmold stock that I have on my 10/22 that I used to shoot a Rifleman score in March. It helped keep me more consistent with the longer stock....

I got it when it was on sale, but a decent stock if you don't mind spending the money.
Try Boyds http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/
or a Fajen Legacy adjustable stock
I'm 6' 4" and they fit me well. The Houge stock is a little short, but that is the one I use in the field
My best advice is to try out all the ones you can find, and get what works. A lot of people like the Hogue, I personally have one that I believe isn't made anymore, by a company called Corelite.
I'm in the same boat as Duc-Dog. Tech sights on mine with a limbsaver slip-on that adds 1". With a high scope, then I need a cheekpad, I've used the ones from Blackhawk.
"•I think I'd prefer a flattish butt (the pointy part of the butt pad on my current stock causes a lot of discomfort after prolonged practice standing)"
Saw off the curvy part, limbsaver slip-on you'll be good to go......O.L.
As points of refference, at 6'4" the length of pull that I like is 14.75", my wifes at 5'9" is 13.5", and the loaner I use for kids is 12". Keep in mind for loaners, any of us can shoot a rifle that's too short better than one that's too long...O.L.
I have one of those Archangel stocks on one of my 10/22s I use for target shooting. It is heavy but the adjustable buttstock is nice. The handgrip is a bit small for my large hand however.
Probably the best thing to do however is mod your factory stock. Bed the action, cut the butt square and and add a butt pad to make it longer if necessary. I've also seen people modify (i.e., build up) the pistol grip with bondo.
Natchez shooters supplies is running a special on just about all their 10/22 after market stocks for July/Aug 2011. I prefer the Axiom (fit to youngsters) or Hogue (better for normal sized adults) for Appleseed purposes.

Hogue Overmolded and Ram Line stocks for 10/22 are also on sale!!
No, I'm not affiliated with these folks, just like to pass on good deals when they pop up... BeSwift
I have the Axiom stock--very comfortable, adjustable, (extremely) free-floating barrel. It replaced Hogue Overmolded stock, which was a pain to get mags out of, no matter what I did to it.
But that would depend on what your definition of 'affordable' is...
My problem with the Axiom (I have tried it) is that the forend bends when under any sort of sling tension at all. It literally pulls the forend up to an inch to the sling side. And understand, I don't use an especially tight sling!

That's weird--I don't have that problem, and I DO put quite a bit of tension in my sling... But then, even if it does, it shouldn't matter because the barrel is not attached to it and accuracy is not affected.
