AAR Katy TX June 18-19, 2011

The first Katy, TX Appleseed was a fun and safe shoot held at the great The Impact Zone range. http://www.theimpactzonerange.com/

21 shooters chose to get off the couch and experience a marksmanship clinic in Southeast Texas heat.

Instructors for this event were myself, spmcpeek, sleepy Joe and Banana Man. Shooter Jessica, who's husband is an instructor in GA, also helped by taking over admin for me before we started.

The skill levels of the shooters varied, but everyone seemed to pick up the instruction quickly. There were several women and two children.

Temp was 103 on Saturday with a surprisingly low 30% humidity ("Yeah, man, but it's a dry heat...").  $$-0

This range has a welder/generator for classroom A/C and electricity. We decided to take frequent water breaks in the A/C and did most of the instruction, position demos and history in the classroom. What was especially cool was that the generous range owner Phil Oxley waived range fees for this Appleseed event. We took it upon ourselves to raise some money for generator fuel for the range owner. I think he'll be pleased with how appreciative the shooters were.  O0

We didn't have any riflemen this time out. I do recall some scores in the 180's, so just a little more persistence and they get there.

A few of the shooters present have expressed interest in becoming instructors. I hope they get the opportunity to follow through.

Pictures from Saturday:

My longtime good friend and sleepy Joe's brother in law David finally made it to an Appleseed after years of two red hats encouraging him to do so. He did pretty well!

One thing I forgot to mention was that the wind blew almost constantly. Target backers frequently detached from their boards. A couple of target backers blew away! One time we came out of the classroom and a shooter's matt had blown behind the target line and was laying on the berm. The good part was the wind was blowing toward the target line so no correction factor was required.

OK, Sunday AM...

A quadraped wanted to RSO on the right side. I think he decided this was not for him after we fired at the AM Redcoat as he vacated the area soon after.

Sounds like Davilla.

Sounds like Texas.

Y'all had a good shoot it sounds like. Nice turnout. Glad to hear some of them want to become Instructors. I'm sure they'll get Rifleman eventually.

And wow, A/C. Y'all are gonna get spoiled.

The thing is it doesn't sound like Southeast Texas. Normally the humidity is 80-100% and the heat is more oppressive. It was unusually dry for this area and this time of year.

My son and I had a great time and we will be attending another Appleseed again - hopefully soon!  Thanks to all of the instructors.  We will be dry firing to practice our steady hold factors!  Also I will be buying the book Paul Revere's Ride as I loved the history.
