Title: Puryear, Tennessee April 5/6th 2008
Post by: TwoGlock on April 06, 2008, 09:34:10 PM
I just got back from the Puryear, Tennessee Appleseed shoot.

I'm too tired to elaborate and not eloquent enough with words to describe what a great time I and I believe, everyone else had.

Thanks to the all the instructors and all the students that came out.

Ok now some of you artist with words give us your story.

Don't forget to come back September 12th & 13th. :)

Well its next day and I thought it might be simpler to edit my original post than add another one.

I made a few pictures.  Would have made more but there was a fellow there with a really nice camera saying he would post them at a later date.

Here is a link to the few that I made.

It's early Monday morning and I have to head back to JFK to work :(.
I give y'all some highlights of the weekend.
One note....Fred, you were pretty skimpy on those rifleman patches, good thing I had an extra one in my range bag! ;D  Instructors were ready to tear off the patches from their shooting jackets so that no one would be left out! :o

First day started off cold, cloudy and raw but at least it had finally stopped raining! We had a good crowd of 30 shooters with all levels. A group of shooters consisted of 3 generations with "Grandma" and Grandson Jonathan just learning how to shoot!!

We started off with introductions, the safety rules, and range commands. Hawkhavn told us the first strike. Then down to the line. Got the first shot off at 1030. We had a two shooters clear the red coat...but I must admit, they have done this once or twice before! ;)
We shot lots of squares and instruction before lunch.
Lunch was provided by the local 4H Club, which was gobbled up by lots of hungry shooters. Mighty Mouse gave us the second strike.
After lunch, back to line for more shooting and instruction. We shot CAQT's drilling on transition and mag changes. Which led us into an AQT by the end of the day. This produced 6 riflemen!! ;D

Day two brought out 24 shooters. History was presented by Dond, then a quick review of the safety rules and range commands. Then back to the line. We warmed up on one inch squares then right into two AQT's. We produced another rifleman before lunch!!

Another great lunch. Longshot enlightened us on Dangerous Old men. He used props such as the the bayonet and wore a hat that brought us all back in time. I told them the story of the Ladies of Pepperill. We introduced the seventh step at lunch as well.

Then back to the line. We worked on ball and dummy, a star NPOA drill and a fun shoot, the Minute Man Challenge. JB will be happy to know that he still has a chance to be the first to clear the Minute Man Challenge! We had one shooter come within two shots.

We had time for one more AQT. No riflemen on this one but so many on the cusp! It was 4pm and many folks had to leave. So we had our closing ceremonies. Instructors volunteered to stay later for folks who wanted to try another AQT....actually some of the instructors shot the AQT as well!!
Well, perseverence paid off...we produced one more rifleman!! He just made it with a 210 and we decided to spare him from the creeks close by!!

Riflemen:
Jeremy Anderson     210
Gene Norman          211
Neal Schaefer         212
Alex Patrick            226
Scott Rob              226
Carl Blevins            227
Steve Anderson      231
Bill Kennedy           242

Great Job Gentlemen!!!

Everyone seemed to have a great time and learned alot! I had the luxury of having 9 instructors who all did a fantastic job!!  In fact, I even got to shoot!! :o

Thanks to Dond, Sarah and George for setting things up.
We had a professional photographer, Oleg, who not only participated in the shoot but took lots of pictures which I hope to be able to post when I get them.

Thank you all for coming out to the shoot, looking forward to seeing everyone along with some friends, family, co-workers or anyone else that you can bring in Sept.

Sorry I couldn't make this one. I would hazard a bet that with so many Rifleman scores, DonD was not allowed ANYWHERE near a timekeeping device? ;)

And with a M1-A and iron sights...........

It's really nice to shoot beside someone who can really show you how it's done.  I'm not always that lucky.

Some pictures from Saturday are at
http://picasaweb.google.com/HenryCountyPictures/Appleseed02

I hope you can find some of the stories buried in the pictures.  There is at least one extended family shooting together.  The youngest seemed to be having a great time.    There were many instructors taking turns explaining the hows and whys of the six steps of firing a shot.  There seems to be some napping during the prep periods (all line shots are from prep because I was shooting and haven't figured out how to shot a rifle and a camera at the same time).  I guess I missed the part about a good nap improving accuracy <g>.

Guess when DW is running it, I have to put in more than six Rifleman badges in the "supply box" for the future, right? ;D

     Due notice is taken.

Good pics, Norm and Carl. I remember how nice that 'kitchen' was when I was there (with the AC on!)... :) Glad it was cold enough that the Instructor sweatshirts came in handy!

As always the Henry County Gun Club never puts on a bad Appleseed.  If all the gun clubs in this country were as willing to participate in promoting Appleseeds we would be have 7,000 Appleseeders by now.   I can hardly wait for them to get their 600 yard range built.  ;D  Thanks to George, DOND and DOND's "better half"  as well as the HCGC for all their help.

For those wondering about the "dirtbag" appellation for a quiet, retired physics professor and how he got it, I have heard that rumor links it to long-time association with an outlaw motorcycle gang - you know, fast women, fast wheels, drugs - and that dond was asked to "cool it" when he moved up to being full professor. If true, that sounds like a pretty interesting story (if you come to a dond AS, you can ask him yourself)... :)

And I echo every compliment in this thread paid to Henry County Gun Club. Wish every gun club held itself to the high standards shown by this one. 8)

Well, it's a fact that DonD is a physics professor and at MSU they call him Dr. Duncan.  It's also a fact that he spent many years racing motorcycles.

The best thing a person could call DonD is "Friend" and I've had the good fortune to be able to do that for a number of years now.  Everyone should be so lucky.

He is the kind of guy that would first grab his rifle and reply "where are we going" had Paul Revere said to him "The Regulars are coming".

DonD doesn't talk a lot or often, but when he does it would be to their benefit to "Listen".

i also was at the puryear apple seed.  had a heck of a time learning to shoot peep sights, find zero, adjust my sights, break in a brand new bushmaster AR15, and try to keep up with the shooting.  wow did those instructors help me knock a ton of rust off my shooting.  went from an 86 to a 184  and moved my personal range from 100 yards to over 200 in the course of 2 days.  really can't thank the instructors enough.  i did find and join a local range

make sure Fred sends enough patches to the next one i'm at.

86 to 184 in on weekend is a dramatic improvement.

I would venture to bet you will make the magic 210 at the next Appleseed.

Keep up the good work, and remember why we have the right to do it, 04/19/1775.

Many years ago I use to go to the Desoto Range at Hernando, MS for the long range pistol Silhouette matches.   Do they still do those there?

His journal is at http://olegvolk.livejournal.com/ (http://olegvolk.livejournal.com/), his gallery is at: http://olegvolk.net/ (http://olegvolk.net/).  On The High Road he posted this on an Appleseed related thread:

www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=354329 (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=354329)
I just attended a shoot. Loved it! Learned so much! The range officers were very good, clear and helpful.

several people used .22 and 8mm bolt guns and kept up fine. I used two different 10-22s and thought autoloading helpful for it let me keep the sight picture between shots.

It's the best deal in basic marksmanship training and a lot of fun. Photos later this week.

So we can expect images soon.  He did post the following image on his journal.  A picture tells a thousand words!  ;D

I could work in a Hernando, Mississippi Appleseed in September (Other than 12th & 13th).

The Desota Range is 190 miles from my front door.

I might even run into Dallas Westgard.....   Havent seen that fellow in years.

Set it up, we will be there.

Excellent picture.

Everyone seems rightfully excited about their Appleseed experience.

Something that no one has commented about so far is the excellent visual aids used during the IMC session and the sight alignment, sight picture session.

Thanks to who ever did this work.  It is EXCELLENT

Great guy.  I know him personally.  You meet some of the best people there are at Appleseeds and RBCs.
