Title: USGI Sling on an SKS?
Post by: Unbridled Liberty on April 24, 2011, 08:13:20 PM
Has anyone put a USGI web sling on an SKS?  If so, where did you get the sling hardware?

Nothing a little hack-saw and file won't cure on standard USGI hardware...don't have to be pretty...just functional.

Ask Itsansks,,,,send him a pm  When I need to know more about the sks  he is my goto guy . other then that I have been thinking just a sling stud and 1&1/4 sling swivel on the front and I think the rear will work out fine , one of the problems with the sks is not the Rifle its self but the ammo for it most of the cheap ammo for it is .308 bullets and the bore of an sks calls for .310 ,,but currently there is a lot of yugo surplus ammo it corrosive tho so a good cleaning is in order right after shooting it ,,much to do and try out but not as much time to do it as I would like .

No hacksaw needed!

No permanent modification of the rifle needed!

You bought a MidwayUSA shooting mat?  You've already got the hardware you need!

The shoulder strap to the midway shooting mat has two spring clips, one on either end.  Assuming you are willing to sacrifice the shoulder strap, you can salvage these clips, and use one to attach a 1-1/4" sling to your SKS, using the side-mount attaching point.

If need be, I can post a picture of what I'm talking about.

These clips are NOT super strong, so you'll have to be careful about how much tension you put on the sling.  (Should be snug, not tight!)

Once you've got an idea of what type of clip you are looking for, a quick trip to goodwill, or some other consignment shop should net you a better (stronger) clip.

A high speed rotary tools would get prettier results. No permanent modification of the rifle needed. This will work for as long as I own it. Still pretty stout still just in case you hunt with your SKS, and well you know, Stuff happens.

Post a pic ItsanSKS. I'm not quite sure if the pic in my head matches what you have done.

Put a new Choate stock on mine (59 FRNs @ Midway).

It came with sling swivel studs - http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=715236

Stock is the proper height for use with the Tech Sights that were also installed.

I Dremeled some GI clips just like 06en.  I keep about 5 pairs of them in my Appleseed range bag.  Allows folks to easily use a GI sling on any rifle with a smaller-than-1.25" sling loop fixed on the rifle.  I use them on my M39 Finn.

Thanks for all the replies and great ideas.  This is what I have come up with.  My SKS had a sling point on the left side of the butt stock:

So I removed it and inserted a patch:

Then I bent the wings to conform to the forearm:

I'm going to use the 1 1/4" hardware I already had for the butt stock.  I'm waiting for the new finish to dry before I attach them.

Son of Martha had a neat set up with some bent wire clips that made putting a GI sling on an SKS easy.  PM him.

Sorry for being a little OFF TOPIC. I like the side of stock sling swivels. I've found that it's great for a Hasty sling. YMMV

I felt the sling point was too close to my cheek for comfort, and I was going to remove it anyway.  The wire clip method would not work for me, as I like my sling very tight.  They taught us in the military "If you have any feeling left in your arm or hand, the sling is too loose.".  I don't make quite it as tight as we did then, but tighter than most everyone else makes it.

I bought these after spending a lot of recent Appleseed line time with brand new shooters. The standard 1.25" "push then rotate to remove" style sling swivels sold everywhere seemed to impede clearning the line quickly when a new shooter was still on the learning curve. I recently found this solution.

MFI 1.25" HK style sling hooks used with USGI slings. They make it too easy to adapt a USGI sling to most any rifle, included SKS, AK, G3 and rifles with little factory 1" loops. Shooters can use a loop sling and leave it on their arm. The action required to unclip these seems to make more sense to new shooters - they safed their rifles more quickly in Pharr, TX. One shooter bought 2 from me because he liked them so much, even though I hadn't planned to sell them.

I came close to having a buddy do some cutting and welding to widen surplus HK hooks I had  (they are narrow) before discovering these.
