I recently obtained an used 10-22 stock that I would like to cut down to make a youth length stock but do not know how much to cut off from the butt. Any advice on how much to cut off and how to reinstall the butt plate would be appreciated.

just make sure you have over 26" total, I went 16 1/2" on the barrel and then 26 1/2" total, put a piece of rubber pad on for the butt
You need to determine if it is for a specific kid or for kids in general. If it is a specific kid, place the stock in the inside of their elbow and see where the trigger finger comes to, no dragging wood. The distance between the finger and trigger is what needs to be removed from the butt. If it is just for general kids, I would take off 2 inches max.
I would cut straight parrel with the existing heel and toe of the butt then add a little curve with a rasp. The butt plate won't fit as the stock is tapered and it will be too big. You could buy some self sticking textrued rubber. It comes in sheets from Brownells or Natches. I have not tried but heard that "crinkle black engine enamel" dried with a blow drier creates a good non slip butt serface.
Measure Twice, Think Thrisce, cut once.

I found a nice and inexpensive nonslip surface for a stock. Ace Hardware, likely others as well, carries 3M non-slip strips for wooden decks. I have it on my 10/22 and it sticks and works well.
Hope this helps,
Dutch
Here's what I do, cut 3" off then put a small LimbSaver slip on rubber recoil thingy which adds 1". Take a rasp to the throat of the stock to thin her down, and place the forward sling lug 4" inboard from the barrel band. Makes them much more kid and lady friendly. One thing is for certain, ANYONE can shoot a gun too short for them better then they can one that is too long.....O.L.
A workable butt plate treatment is skateboard tape, or ladder step non-skid tape. Good over a sawn-off wood stock, or over any too-slippery metal or plastic butt plate. I got a roll of the ladder step tape at Home Depot. Kinda spendy for one, but the roll of tape is good for dozens of rifles.
I use an old mouse pad for my cut down youth stocks. Glue it on and trim to fit or vice versa if you prefer. I use the rubber side out. This gives a nonslip surface and is not abrasive on clothing like skateboard or step tape. And it gives a little "recoil" protection for those new shooters. :cool2:

Wouldn't that be too short for most people? That's awfully far back.
SKATEBOARD TAPE... MADE TO STICK TO WOOD!
10/22's are 13-3/4 length of pull from the factory. This is measured from the trigger to the butt. ( shortest distance ) most females under 5'7" would benefit from 1" reduced. 12.75. I have a 12.5 that works good with most kids under 5'0". The short answer is wack an inch of the stock.
I have started a program in Michigan to get SEVERAL 10/22 stocks donated. Didn't we all take off the birch stock and put it on the shelf? So far we have 6 stocks. They will be chopped down one inch and spread around to the shoot bosses. When we see a youth or female struggling we can quickly swap out the stock. It is amazing when you see them actually reaching the trigger and the center of gravity moves back for standing position.
