Another great Texas shoot. Good weather, good people, what more could you ask for?
SB: Paul. Instructors: Chuck, Jesse, and Kirby. IIT: Frank, Bill.
Weather: Saturday: T-shirts, temps in 80's. Sunday: Windy. Very.
While we only had 9 people show up on Saturday and none on Sunday, well one, our new IIT Bo. And no, the zero shooters on Sunday didn't have anything to do with our instruction. :) They all had prior obligations except for one. I think he was just plain worn out. Appleseeds tend to do that to people.
However, on Sunday morning Paul gave a class to the Instructors on KD shooting. Wow, a light came on in my head, come ups now make more sense. He knows his stuff.
We had one Rifleman, Bo, on Saturday. But what a Rifleman! He took the Orange and I'm dang glad he did. I think he is of the character that he'll stick with it and I can see him wearing a Red Hat one day in the future. What really good is now there are three IITs in the Midland/San Angelo area that can help Jesse with shoots. There is wild Bill, Frank, and now Bo too. Frank just took the Orange back in late 2010.
Wild Bill and John made us feel right at home at the Midland Shooters Assoc. Real nice range. Shoot, Chuck paid his membership. We're gonna come down a day or two early for the next shoot so WE can do some shooting.

Although there were way fewer shooters than anticipated, it wasn't for lack of effort and still made for a great shoot.
We had flyers all over town in the local gun shops, sent lots of emails, and passed out hundreds of flyers at the three gun shows leading up to the event. Many people I talked to said that they couldn't come in February, but were shooting for April - hope this proves to be the case. Historically Midland in April has had a better turnout than February. I also think that the local economy has something to do with it - unlike most of the nation, Midland/Odessa is experiencing a boom and most of the hands are either still working on Saturday or resting up after an 80-100 hour week. If y'all need a job, Midland/Odessa is the place to be right now.
Due to the low turnout this time, I had the opportunity to get acquainted with my new M1A on Saturday - I can't think of a better way to put a rifle or Rifleman to the test than shooting at an Appleseed.
On Sunday, after ASHRN03's long range classroom instruction, we were able to apply our skills at 500 meters and had 'em ringing steel in 25 mph winds (has anybody told you that the skills learned at 25 meters work at the full distance?).
No matter what the weather conditions or the number of shooters, any day at the range is a great day - especially if there's an Appleseed involved.

Yes, I still vividly remember Paul's KD instruction and his drills at the DAVILLA 3-10! Bootcamp. To this day I cannot walk to a target line without it echoing in my mind "How BIG is my group and WHERE is my group!". Simply one of the best.
It was truly a great weekend (aren't they all!!) and Midland is one of the finest ranges I've ever seen. I've not been to the NRA facility in New Mexico, but I have been to Camp Perry and Midland rivals it in what it offers. Even the wind!!
Paul runs a very good shoot--we covered all instruction, all three strikes and got in 2 AQTs on Saturday--and it was so smooth that I never felt like we were rushing anyone. His long distance class is second to none and I intend to incorporate his techniques in my instruction. All in all a very fantastic weekend. I'm looking forward to it again in April.
You owe it to yourself to get out to an Appleseed in Midland--truly great folks and a tremendous facility.
