CMP has added a Tactical class to their Sporter shoots. There was only a handful in the Tactical class last year at the Nationals. I thought it would be a good time to get one built. It would be great for AS also.
Already have a lower, upper is coming within a week. Does anybody had personal knowledge of the accuracy of the CMMG .22 barrel? Any other barrel recommendations that don't cost a fortune?
My Brother in law has done some research and found a custom barrel maker, Beyer Barrels. A bit expensive, but they have gotten good reviews. Anybody have any experience with them?
I have four dedicated .22 uppers. Two from Kurts Kustom Firearms (no longer in business), one from DPMS (no longer being made), one from Velocity Firearms. I like all of them, and have shot a rifleman score with 3 of them (the DPMS is set up with a scope / bipod, so no go for an AQT).
Try checking AR15.com. Click on the AR15 tab, then on Rimfire and Pistol calibers. You will find a lot of reviews on the current barrels being offered.
Hope this helps!
Brad
I have had other CMMG products in the past and have had good luck with them. That being said I had one of the first generation CMMG dedicated .22 uppers. Saw pics of groups posted by some people who bought one and had nice groups. That was not the case with mine. First of all the front sight post was canted, the FSB and barrel nut appeared to have been installed by a 800 lb gorilla and sent the rifle back to the factory to be adjusted. Got the rifle back and it really did not group any better then 5.56 upper with a conversion kit. Broke the back plate on the bolt, sent back again. Broke it again and they sent me a new bolt that was reinforced. I found I could get some ammo to shoot about 6moa but was had reliability issues, had ammo hit 10 moa but shot reliable. Put it up for sale and was up front with the buyer on its accuracy, Took a bath on the sale. Bought a Tac Sol LT upper, put a YHM forearm and have a rifle I love. Since that time CMMG has revamped the .22 lineup and have some very cool innovations. I am pretty sure I just had a "bad" upper since I had owned a bargain bin rifle from them in 5.56 that was very accurate.
Here is my Tac Sol. I can shoot irons, red dot and scope with a few twists of a thumb screw. With Win 555 ammo it shots 1/2 inch at 25 and with Federal Match it is a ragged hole.

And Arf does have a very in depth rimfire forum. For just a barrel I would also look at Spikes Tactical since I am pretty sure they sell the barrels separate, You may have to call them and I have heard they like most other firearm company's are back logged. A friend has one and it depends on who is more on that day for accuracy.
Well, the rifle is built and it works great. Highest CMP Sporter score I have ever had. It is a Beyer barrel CMMG bolt. It groups 15 shot small ragged hole at 50ft prone w/sling. I was using CCI Standard Velocity.
I installed a Lavang Linear Compensator, mostly for looks, but it really throws the sound downrange, as witnessed by my Brother-in-Law standing behind the firing line, as compared to the other .22 on the line.
I also installed a Green Mountain Heavy Taper on my 10/22. Oh My, no more flyers, great groups. I let a gunsmith fit it to my stock - a whopping $20 for that. The GM barrel was only $75.
In my opinion, if the .22 AR's purpose is to provide cheaper shooting vs. your center fire AR15 then you should make sure it is as similar as possible (stock, pistol grip, handguard, sling attachment, etc.) You want (once you sling up and get into the rifle) rifles so similar that telling the difference is difficult/impossible till it goes "bang". It really helps you if they are "clones" of each other. The more differences there are the more likely you are to do something wrong under stress (you react as you've trained to react).
This .22 dedicated is almost identical to my RRA Entry Tactical - Hogue grip, stock almost identical, and same 2-stage RRA trigger. I added the bolt hold open plate and had to do slight modification on the bottom of the CMMG bolt, but it works perfectly now. Also had to change the magizine followers to the gray hold open type.
