Title: AAR: Como,MS - Feb 12-13, 2011
Post by: dart67eb on February 13, 2011, 11:00:40 PM
Another successful Appleseed!  What started of as a possible winter seed on Saturday morning quicly turned into a mud seed.  All three of the attendees that made rifleman took a tan patch in honor of it.  Congrats to Bigbob, Runfree and Clay on getting their patches.  Runfree shot a 230 on the last AQT of the weekend.  Bigbob and Runfree also took orange hats!   Clay was at his first event, but he's welcome to come back and show us all how to shoot.  Great improvement was made by all including Kevin knocking on the door with a 186.  Richard also shot well with his bolt gun.  My thanks to Hornet41 as IIT for keeping me straight!  Huzzah to all!

Well, again Como upheld it's tradition of water, mud, wind and ice to challenge the fortitude of the shooters!! All present were determined to "tough" it out with an excellent learning attitude and all made great progress!! Richard needed shoulder therapy after working his classic bolt action all day Sunday!! Clay was challenged with a scope that decided to come apart internally on Saturday but showed up Sunday with a new scope and was "on fire" after getting it dialed in!! Runfree knocked on the door till it finally opened for him on Sunday afternoon. Talk about sticking with it! Bigbob didn't let his intermittent extraction problems slow him down. Kevin made great progress after overcoming equipment trouble.
This was my first shoot as an IIT and although intimidating at first, I enjoyed myself and didn't "step on my crank" to often.  :))

Let me see, Appleseed or Winterseed, Snow and Ice Seed, Windseed, ohhhhh I know MUDSEED.  I think it was all the above.  It was a great time.  Everyone there was willing to learn including the shooting Boss.  Would recommend Dart67ed to anyone.  With him you get his son which knows a lot more that Dart does.  I did come away with the Orange hat and ready to continue.

Thanks All.

RunnFree,

That's why I bring him.  Anyway, he's my 11yr old that doesn't think he knows everything.  On the other hand, my teenagers....  Anyway, thanks for coming out and sticking with it.  I'm glad you had a good time and hope to see you again.

The "Mud-seed" in Como was great!  We fought the snow, the mud, the wind, and I'm still nursing my sunburn, but as one of the instructors pointed out, our inconveniences can't compare to the conditions the riflemen endured to secure the freedoms we enjoy today.  It was truly a pleasure to participate!

RunnFree showed superb persistence in achieving his patch.  He never gave up or got down, and we all knew that he would get it.  Very inspiring!!!  Eb and Mo worked hard with each of the participants and their individual needs to ensure that we all benefited in measurable ways (our AQT scores)!  Everyone improved their score, and the credit belongs mostly to the instructors and partially to the willing attitudes of the participants.

I almost felt like my son was there with Pete making sure we learned EVERYTHING that we were supposed to!  That boy definitely knows what he's about!!!

I was proud to be in the company of men who take our American history and heritage so seriously.  Thanks for your leadership!!!

BTW - My "mortally wounded" Indian will rest on my desk at work and will be the start of many 7th step conversations.  If only it had as many holes as RunnFree's....

I am still cleaning the mud off of my gear!  :D I had a great time and learned alot. Eb, Mo and Pete were great instructors. They were very patient and wanted to see everyone succeed. The history lesson really hit home on what our forefathers really decided to do. You won't get that in any high school history lesson! I what to congratulate all of the new Marksmen. I look forward to joining your ranks in the near future. The Desoto Pistol & Rifle Club is a very convenient place for me to practice so look out!  :---

I am probably heading to Waco, GA (near Atlanta) with my brother for the April 9-10th Appleseed there. My daughter may go with us if I can get her a cheap youth rifle. -I will be at the Philadelphia MS Ham Jam festival competing in the BBQ contest there the same week as the Como Appleseed.

Eb, can I get some Appleseed flyers to take with me to the festival?

PS - Pete is going to make a great instructor!

-Kevin

Sorry I couldn't make this one. I would have especially like to have seen all the new Riflemen.  O0 However, after looking at the mud, my truck thanks me for not making this one. It still remembers the last time.  !@#)

Had fun everyone, even if the bolt action made things interesting. I'm already working on an equipment list for next time. I don't think I'll have all the funds together by the April shoot but maybe by the summer.

A Remington 597 (http://gunsforsale.com/remington-597-22lr-6550) can be had at a good price.
+ Tech-Sites or scope (A scope is actually cheaper, but the sites look VERY rugged.)
+ Uncle Mike's sling quick disconnect swivels and studs.
+ Nylon GI sling (Can they be had in Black to match the gun I'm looking at?)

I like my 597. I did't have any malfunctions with feeding. I had optics problems all weekend, hence the Eb lending me his Marlin. I am getting good glass and getting in sighted in at the Desoto range. 10 rnd mags are cheap, Midway has new ones for $10.99, Cheaperthandirt.com had them for $12.99. To get really good info on the 597 go to rimfirecentral.com and find the Remington 597 subgroup. I squalked on there three days before the Appleseed because my extractor blew out. One of the members had been to an Appleseed offered to send me his bolt so I could make the event! Good folks over there.

The Marlin is very reliable too ---

I've got some potential attendees. My boss and his son are interested. His son is on the Rifle team at Purdue. I've also got a friend that used to be a NRA instructor and who has had training with Massad Ayoob. His favorite quote of Mas's is something to the effect of, "I'm not arrogant, I just have a level of confidence that many are not comfortable with."

Hobbes1069,
Try egunparts.com (aka Numrich).  Last year I ordered 3 nylon USGI slings I think about $6.50 each, or less than $21.00. I didn't know it at the time, but they sent black ones; one was perfect for the AR, the other was put on the stainless 10/22 with the black composite stock, and the other was used as a loaner; since disappeared.  Good luck!

Don't let the lack of a rifle stop you.  Let me know ahead of time and I can probably arrange a loaner.

Yeah, I've already got an offer off forum as well :) My intention though is to practice with my new equipment before I come. I'll see if Rangemaster will let me lay on the floor for some prone practice.  >:D

Don't think you have to go to the range to practice!! I laid on the floor at home aiming at a target posted on the wall and "dry fired" my heart out!! Dry firing is great practice and a good skill sharpening technique! 'Mo :---

Ebben -- jeeze, MUD?  What do you do there, alternate between dust and mud?  I think maybe some of us should chip in and maybe buy you some grass seed.  When I was there for the first Como shoot last year, Rommel's desert corps would have been right in their element.

Anyway, it sounds like you've got Como well on the Appleseed map.  Congratulations.

Dick

Now THAT is a good Mudseed!!!  I only want to know...what color will the Rifleman Mudseed Patch be?

We'll have to ask Fred for a Mudseed patch.  I think it's very viable alternative to the blue Winterseed and Tan summer patch.

Here in Illinois, we do a lot of down in the mud ourselves, especially from now until...say July!!!

Looks like you had a great shoot!  Congrats to the Riflemen!!!  O0  ^:)^   Well done!!

See you all on the trail!
