Title: 10/22 clear mag problems
Post by: Roland on January 20, 2011, 01:39:31 PM
So, I went out the other day and bought 2 new clear Ruger 10/22 factory mags. I've heard from various appleseeders that these will drop free easier because of slicker plastic. The problem is they don't drop free at all. I've filed down the surface of both the mags and the well considerably down, and they still won't drop. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could make these drop free?

Thanks,

Roland

My experience with the clear mags has been great.  They have dropped right out.  Did you by chance install an extended mag release?  I saw one instance where the release was causing the mag to bind.  Are your old mags still falling free?   My solution to tight mags is the same as your - removing some surface area off the mags.  I believe there are some old threads on this topic on this forum.  Maybe they have some ideas.

I just went through this.  Its the mag well.  If your other ones drop free and the clear ones don't, you need to open up the mag well area.  Use a grease pencil or just eyeball it and start filling away.
Good luck.

A dremel with a sanding drum says this problem goes away...

I do lots of stocks. it's ALWAYS the stock. I have NEVER had to cut or file a mag. I can see where certain aftermarket releases could be problems, but I've never had any. The metal parts of the 10/22 will not bind a mag. Just sand or file the sides of the magwell about 1/16" each side, and if you still have problems, you have REAL problems.     :o
