Title: 10/22 swivel location
Post by: 7.62 on January 12, 2011, 04:45:58 PM
I'm trying to set up my LTR and am at the point of installing swivels for a sling.  Would it be better to place it in front or behind the barrel band?  And for the rear, just an inch or two from the butt?

Throw the barrel band away, and mount swivel just behind the recess for the band.
Rear, 1.876549" forward of buttplate (in other words... it doesn't matter much on the rear..particularly if you use the loop sling!)

Throw the barrel band away,...

Throw it away? Mac, are you sure? Maybe I should go look again at my 10/22 but I'm pretty sure it plays a real role in stably connecting the barrel & receiver to the stock.

As for location, personally, next time I mount swivel studs on a rifle for my own use I'm gonna place it so that when I'm in prone I can lean forward into the sling and relax as much as possible ("like a hammock", as Meanstreaker puts it), while maintaining a proper bend in the support elbow.

In other words, let the "Steady Hold Factors" determine your optimal swivel placement, according to your body size and shape.

Gordon,
I actually kept mine, but I opened it up where it (barrel band) won't touch the barrel. That way no matter how much pressure you put on the stock with a sling, the barrel will not be flexed. Cruise rimfirecentral.com and see what the "experts" say. I actually found that one makes much sense. (I am a benchrest shooter also and you don't want anything touching your barrel that can change shot to shot.) YMMV IMHO LOL

I have a 1974 10/22 Deluxe and a 2006 Youth Model carbine length neither of which use the band. The action screw on the 10/22 holds it together. Mac is right about Rimfire Central, too. Those guys do seem to know their stuff.

I you like it and you think it is accuracy neutral, by all means keep it. If you think that you are experiencing barrel flex that it may be affecting, try removing it and installing a standard type swivel in the stock.

Ah OK, sort of a "poor-man's floated barrel" huh? Cool. Thanks.

I bot my 10/22 in 1975, Uncle Mike sells swivels that go on the barrel band screw, between the ends of the band. This has worked well for me ever since. No problem shooting all day, no change in POI. The rear swivel should be placed 1 to 1 1/2 inches forward of the butt, too far forward will adversly effect Hasty slings.

Just my 2 cents

I would agree with NOT having the sling attached to the front barrel band. Pressure from the sling can disturb barrel harmonics and shift POI. Changes in the sling tension would give you different POI's too.

Why not have as accurate a rifle as possible? All my 10/22's do not have a barrel band. >>> 1 custom build, 1 DSP, 1- 10/22T. All tack drivers with CCI SV ammo.

Tho it has been said that the barrel touching the front of the stock does aid accuracy. Nemo could weigh in here...he has done some barrel tuning on 10/22's and is one of the RimfireCentral gurus. I would value his opinion greatly.

I like sturdy.

Sturdy for me is a M1917 Enfield rear swivel and an M14 front swivel.

I left my barrel band alone as it does not seem to affect anything one way or the other (while its on there, I've never tried taking it off to shoot it).

Mine is an older rifle bought used locally.

I added a 1" (or so) extended buttplate on the stock to help with my long arms.

prior to the 1" buttplate install

If you put it in front of the barrel band you have to unscrew the swivel or stretch the hell out of the barrel band to remove the stock. My stock has a nice wood putty patch in front of the barrel band that shows how I learned this. Mounting behind the band works fine for sling position. I've also since ground down the inside of the top of the band with a dremel so it doesn't touch the barrel but still remains in place.

Actually I have found that the rear sling swivel placed just behind the pistol grip increases the stability of the hasty sling, especially in prone. It darn near eliminates the sling from sliding down the back side of your arm.

Uncle Mike's sells the swivel studs which are a machine screw and use a nut just like Winchester, Remington etc use on their centerfire rifles.  You can either get their drill bit which drills the hole and the relief for the nut inside the barrel channel in a single step or you can use a conventional drill bit for the hole and a larger one or a dremel for the nut relief.
