AAR College Station, TX Dec 11-12, 2010

Place your comments and photos for College Station here. I think this was one of the most fun AS events I've worked as an instructor.

Saturday December 11 was clear, cool and sunny with frequent wind gusts. CaptG did a good job staking the metal target stands in place to prevent wind related "OH NO!" target issues.

sleepy Joe called the line in the AM. By the time the first rounds went down range on "Hits Count" targets we had 18 shooters on the line, including three walk-ons. I was re-acquainted Rifleman Roy in Tomball and MateFrio Rob who both had participated at prior AS events. We only had two minors at this shoot.

The results of the first Saturday "Hits Count" Redcoat target:

7 qualified at 100 yards
2 qualified at 200 yards
0 qualified at 300 yards
0 qualified at 400 yards
2 qualified on the 1" square

We then moved on to sling usage, the 6 steps to firing a shot, NPOA, talking targets, ad inches, minutes, clicks.

sleepy Joe gave the 1st Strike just before lunch and CaptG gave the 2nd strike at the end of lunch. After lunch the shooters experienced the ball and dummy drill. After lunch CaptG called the line.

We were able to shoot two AQT's before the end of marksmanship activity on Saturday.

The way this particular range's berm is oriented has the setting sun shining right in front of the shooters muzzles this time of year, making it a bit more of a challenge this sunny day. I pressed on with having the shooters shoot a 2nd AQT because I knew at least one shooter was not returning Sunday and wanted that shooter to have at least two attempts at the AQT.

The Shoot Boss forgot to record the last Saturday "Hits Count" in his zeal to tell the 3rd Strike (I reprimanded myself  ++)) after shooting activity ended Saturday. Roy in Tomball had qualified on all levels of the Redcoat Target during the last Saturday "Hits Count', which I verified Sunday AM.

This group of shooters was very enthusiastic, involved and asked a lot of good questions - BRAVO!

Sunday morning 9 shooters returned. It was about 40 degrees when I arrived at the range and windier than it had been on Sunday. I don't believe the temperature went about 55 degrees (hey, that's cold for Texas, especially Alonso1). Again CaptG did a great job securing the target stands on the firing line and then called the line Sunday AM.

The results of the first Sunday "Hits Count" Redcoat target:

7 qualified at 100 yards
1 qualified at 200 yards
1 qualified at 300 yards
0 qualified at 400 yards
2 qualified on the 1" square

We then spent some time getting rifles better zeroed since some shooters were using different rifles than they had used Saturday. We then did a card the sights drill, then proceeded to the AQT grind. I talked about Dangerous Old Men and Dangerous Women during lunch and called the line in the afternoon.

Sunday we got through 6 AQT targets. By the 5th AQT scoped Ruger 10/22 equipped Melissa became our first (and only) Rifleman with a score of 217! Congrats Melissa!  ..:..  :---

The results of the last Sunday "Hits Count" Redcoat target:

6 qualified at 100 yards
4 qualified at 200 yards
2 qualified at 300 yards
1 qualified at 400 yards
0 qualified on the 1" square

The next College Station, TX Appleseed event should be sometime in March. Keep checking the schedule. We hope to see you again then!

Great shoot, other than a bit of gusty wind and dust the weather was perfect.   O0

My 3rd Appleseed and had a bunch of fun.  Wish I could convince some more friends to join in.

We had a Great bunch of shooters and instructors. Congratulations to new Rifle(wo)man Melissa! All 4 women shooters - Melissa, Ronni, Cindy and Linnie were enthusiastic and ready to learn, and it showed in their improvement all weekend. Roy continues to improve, he'll be shooting Rifleman soon. The Winkle family - all 4 - were a good bunch, I wish they'd been able to return to shoot on Sunday. Rob , Brian and Harrison hung in there too. I'm forgetting some names, and I apologize. Everyone came ready to learn. Joe, Steve and I shared the Strikes, and they were well received. The weather cooperated (a pleasant change from some of the mudbowls we've had at this location in the past and thankfully warmer than what those of you in the rest of the country had to endure this weekend)!

As always a HUGE THANKYOU to landowner Steve!

Each event I attend makes me appreciate my Countrymen more, and renews my faith in our future.

Guy

Dan's rifle had a round that didn't function as intended. Fortunately there was no injury. He ran a boresnake through the rifle and it ran fine the rest of the day.

When its windy, you sometimes have to improvise. These landscape timbers laying at the range were pressed into service - though not exactly a "rifleman's bubble".

Hey Y'all,

Sounds and looks like a good shoot. I pity y'all poor guys having to live in those 'primitive' conditions. How's the guest house these days?

I hook up with y'all sooner or later.

Hopefully sooner.  :)

The guest house front door was locked this time - a fluke. Range owner was out of town. I briefly considered setting up my cot in the unheated men's room, but sleepy Joe's couch seemed/was better. He and I rode together Sunday AM and saved him a trip on a motorcycle at 38 degrees. It all went well.

And I STILL have the bruise to prove it!!!  ;) I can't imagine if I hadn't stuffed a blanket under my sweatshirt.
It was worth every painful wince from the seatbelt on the way home, though!
Thank you guys again.

"The Shoot Boss forgot to record the last Saturday "Hits Count" in his zeal to tell the 3rd Strike (I reprimanded myself   **)  ++)) "

So, SNAITF, for your self imposed punishment you put together another homebuilt?  You restored another piece of history for your collection?  You forced yourself to sign up for 20 events this next year?   **) **) **)

Sounds like you and Sleepy are doing a great job at the College Station "
Reading through this AAR makes me just a little homesick.  The inaugural event here was March '09 with Scout, POP, Sim & Eleanor and Roman, and Stimey & his Dad.  A link to this bit of Appleseed History is provided:

This is a great place to Appleseed.  And, Steve Struve is, as always, a great event host.

SNAITF, Sleepy, Capt G and crew, ya'll keep up the good work.  I will make it back to College Station in 2011 and look forward to seeing and working with all of you.
