Title: *** Snow Angel Seed *** Miamisburg, OH - Dec 4-5
Post by: MeanStreaker on December 04, 2010, 10:56:35 PM
Just a few pics from day one of Ohio's first official Winterseed!  Luna has the quote of the weekend so far after he demonstrated NPOA shifts in the prone position, got up, and asked, "Is that a Rifleman Snow Angel?"   **)

Steady white stuff all day long and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Congratulations!!!

V-nice to see your prints and shell casings in the snow.

Are the snow covered tents to toughen up the shooters and help inspire them to score greater than 210 on the 2nd day of Winterseed?

Be Safe

JH

The event was great. Since it was my first one, I can not compare it to any other. It was cold and wet but at least there were no bugs to distract you as you squeezed the trigger.

Good on Ya! As an Instructor in California all we get to make is dust angels, and they are quickly blown away in the wind. I am impressed and heartened by the shooters who come to Appleseed in extreme conditions and hang in there. Our Founding Fathers would be proud!

Come on Steamer. You said you post the recipe if I joined the forum. Well I have joined. Out of curiosity, why was there only one Snow Angel Seed in Ohio?

What an incredible weekend.... O0  The dedication and perseverance shown by ALL was truly heartwarmin'....

I'll have all my comments and pics up soon (gotta resize each one individually  !@#) )... But in the meantime... :cool2:

Here is MY rendition of "Hardtack"...  This recipe was modified a bit from the "original" for taste and texture...

"Steamer's Hardtack

5 cups Flour
1.5 TSP salt
1.5 TSP Baking Powder
1/4 Cup Powdered Sugar
2 cups water

Preheat oven to 275
Mix all dry ingredients very well in LARGE bowl
Add water
Mix till a large dough ball is formed
Add a dusting of flour to ensure the dough is not sticky  (it should be a "dry" dough)

Knead the heck out of the dough and then split it into 2 pieces
Spread one on a baking sheet till it is about an MOA @ 25 meters thick throughout (if the dough sticks, dust with more flour)
Cut into 8 MOA @ 25 meter squares with pizza cutter and pierce several times each with a fork
Cook for about 40 minutes or until the top forms a whiteish hard crust
Remove from oven and allow to cool  (Although fresh with butter and or a cup of coffee is fine)

Prepare and cook second batch as above...

Honestly I have no solid shelf life on the above recipe since it never seems to stay around for more than 5 or 6 days...  If it smells funky after 7 days, pitch it...

If you want it to last MUCH longer.  Once it has cooled completely, bake again at 275 for 20-25 minutes to draw out the bulk of the remaining moisture...

Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend.  This is absolutely an Appleseed to be remembered!!!!

Looks like an absolute blast.  Wish I could have been there.  If one of these irons works out for me, I should be available for 4 in a row within the next few months (with sleep!)

Great pics, Steamer! O0  Thanks for posting them.

Looks like it turned out to be a pretty good shoot, even if it was a little cold.  But hey?  What's a little snow going to do to the Spirit of Freedom and Liberty blazing brightly in the hearts of all true Americans?

I'm happy to have finally met some ohio "seeders"!
Instructors........I gotta say I'm very impressed, your instruction was top notch and I must salute your toughness for camping in it as well. Showing dedication like this speaks volumes about you guys.
I'm very impressed with the shooters as well. It wasn't easy shooting , bitterly cold with  layers of clothing restricting your movement. I saw some really good shooting and I'm sure more shooters would have "brought it together" in better weather.
I look forward to shooting with you guys again!
   Take it easy, Darwyn

OK, so the SB is a bit late in adding his .02 to the AAR.  ~~:) This was a fun shoot and one I certainly enjoyed. You can't question the determination of our shooters this weekend, especially those who stuck it out for 2 days. Carl, Kevin, Chris, and Ria you guys help to define perseverance.  O0 There was something about the history around the fire on Saturday that just felt right. Thanks too to the Koogler's for that wonderfull lunch on Saturday. On a cold day a hot bowl of chili with crackers is much appreciated. Steamer I baked my first batch of hardtack last night and much to my wife's suprise she really likes it. Congrats goes out to our rifleman for the weekend, Darwyn a repeat rifleman out of the Hoosier state, at least it isn't Michigan, and to Jeff who showed up to his first Appleseed on a Sunday only and shot rifleman.  :--- Of course Jeff gave credit to our Uncle Sam, but even so it takes a man who knows what he is about to lay in the snow all day and shoot a rifleman's score. We had one brave youth on the line and credit must go out to Logan who all day Sunday worked that single shot break open .22 with the skill of an expert, and when his dad put him on the 10/22 he put up and impressive group indeed.  O0 Hopefully I will get to see everyone on the line again in the spring.
