After Action Report-Red Bluff, CA Oct. 2-3, 2010
THANK YOU TEHAMA SHOOTERS ASSOCIATION for the use of your wonderful facility!!! Summer decided to make a brief reappearance the whole week before the Appleseed here... Temps soared to 103 a couple days before the event. The weekend was expected to be very warm. Saturday was about 95. I don't know what the humidity was that afternoon, but it was a bit muggy after the clouds came in. The temps didn't stop 26 Americans from coming out to learn marksmanship skills and their Heritage.
We started with a brief pre history by eaglescouter, then, did the safety briefing. We got rifles on the line and the first Red Coat under way. After doing the count for the morning, we turned on the fire hose and poured out the teaching.
This was an awesome group of shooters. They learned quickly and groups immediately began to change for the better. One shooter had never shot before but he sure soaked up the information and applied it. It showed down on the targets. The morning moved smoothly and we had the first AQT up right before lunch.
13 year old Reed with a score of 219 was the first of 4 riflemen Saturday. Reed didn't stop with one rifleman score though, over the course of the weekend he shot a total of 5 Rifleman scores! This was his 3rd Appleseed and he did an awesome job.
We took a lunch break and told the 3 strikes.
Mike A. was here for his second Appleseed, turned in a very nice 223. Mikhail (one of the other Mike's....I think we had 5 including one of the IIT's) turned in a 214 at his first Appleseed. Jason (a friend of eaglescouter's) came out this way from Wyoming on his vacation... He started his vacation with an Appleseed and a Rifleman patch with a score of 212 at his first Appleseed as well.
Eaglescouter ran the mid afternoon team 2X4 shoot that was enjoyed by all.
Saturday ended with a Red Coat that showed improvements by all.
Rifleman patches and a couple Luther Blanchard patches awarded.
We cleaned up and ended day 1 with lots of smiles.
Sunday was much cooler. We had clouds that blessed us with a brief shower and kept the temps down, that added with a light breeze helped keep all of us a bit cooler. 18 shooters returned Sunday. We got started with a review of the safety rules.
Sunday morning Red Coats and we began the review of Saturday's info. The backers were moved to 100 yards and the shooters got to see that all they learned yesterday really does translate to other distances. Centerfire shooters were able to do their sighting at 100, 200, 300 & 400 yards.
After we got everyone sighted in at 100 yrds we posted the Advanced AQT for the rimfire shooters and the stage one for the centerfire shooters. Eaglescouter worked with the 3 centerfire shooters to make sure they knew exactly what they were going to be doing next. After one round of the advanced AQT all but 4 of the rim fire shooters elected to move back to 25 meters. Two shooters shot a rifleman score on the Advanced AQT. Mikhail was first with a 177, and later Ben who persisted and worked hard got a 178! Chris N. was sooooooooooooo very close to a Known Distance rifleman score...199. He was at his 2nd Appleseed also.
Final Red Coat and then awarded Ben his rifleman patch. Chris D., who helped me by doing admin both days, decided to step up and take her orange hat. She is now Applesauce4360. Chris N. decided to join his dad, 3Huzzahs (Darryl) as an IIT also.
Thanks to all the shooters who were able to stay and help us put the range back to order. Thanks to all my instructors who came out and made the weekend wonderful.

Tired brain syndrome sets in....I forgot to mention....on Saturday we were able to get in 5 AQT's. Chris N's score was on a Full Distance AQT...

The shooters at this Appleseed seemed particularly interested in the information that was given. Both marksmanship instruction and history. These students we're ready to learn.
The instructors worked well together. The shoot boss came up with a great course of instruction and kept it on schedule.
It's the first time I've camped at a Appleseed location, I recommend it to anyone who's inclined to camp.
The weather was cooler than predicted which is fine by me.
At one point on Sun. NorCal22Gal had 3 courses of fire going at one time. 25 meters, 100 yards and, 1, 2, 3, and 400 yd full distance.
This is a testament to her organizational skills and imagination. GREAT JOB!
I can't speak for others but I had a wonderful time and will go back anytime they'll have me.
Eaglescouter and NorCal22Gal are wonderful hosts and have a great range.

Sunday at this Appleseed sounded like the 'old days' when ammunition was far less expensive. The boom of the M1 Garands and AR-15s clearly demonstrated the presence of Riflemans Cadence as they worked on their rifleman skills at 100-400 yards.
