Title: AAR Davilla, TX 9/18-19
Post by: dragit on September 20, 2010, 09:46:47 AM
A very enjoyable weekend with people that really enjoyed the history and improved their shooting skills at the same time.

Apparently the press were impressed with the participants since the reporter informed us she thought they were plants (not as in foliage).

We had one rifleman shoot 216 and 217 at the end of Sunday.  Matt seemed very happy with his accomplishment.  He was persistant and listened to instruction well.

Thomas and Joe were right there with 206 and 209.  Thomas cleaned both red coats on Sunday but I think he was thinking too much during the AQTs.  When he lets it flow it is going to happen.

George from Oregon will be looking for shoots in that area on his return.  He came with Joe and another gentleman unable to come back on Sunday.

Betty and Janice made huge improvements and anyone coming to their doorstep will find trouble if they come looking for it.  Great ladies with attitudes to match.  Leave the menfolk behind and have a good time.

Terri and her sons Cole and Levi came out both days.  They also improved and will return at later dates.

Larry, Andrew, Bill and Scout it was a pleasure and thanks to all for continuing my education.  Pics to follow if I can figure out how to get them on here.

How did the ABC News crew do?
Did they shoot?
When will they have a story we can view?

They were nice to me and the questions they asked were focused on AS related content, not my political views or the size of my rifle.   They did not ask questions of me that seemed to slant to the dark side.  I can not attest to what they were asking participants.  They did focus during the morning on the one AK we had on the line that day, but they also took footage of and talked to participants with .22s.  They stayed for part of the campfire and Chris, the reporter, said she enjoyed the history.

They could not shoot when on assignment but Chris indicated she was interested.  She lives in the Dallas area I think and we told her of the shoots up there.  I think she is a good candidate for the Diva shoot.

Air time is tentatively 10 (am or pm I do not know, ask Scout) Thursday in the Dallas area ABC/WFAA Channel 8 I believe.

I've never had any formal instruction on shooting.  I did learn plenty in my 1st AS--mainly that you can be decent with iron sights even when you really can't see the fine detail of targets. And, stuff breaks, it just does.  My target groups were improving on both days.  The history part played a primary part in getting me to drive about 1.5 hours early on a Saturday morning.  I have to say--If I'd seen Scout's posts on 9/4/10 about the media planning to be there, I would have come at a different time.  Not sure what they will report to their viewers, but I feel like the media even learned a few things about the greatness of WE, The People.  Scout and his crew seemed to tolerate us cooks pretty well.

Well I for one had a great time!

I've been a bench rest shooter all my life, and a hunter too. I felt coming to this event that I was a pretty good shooter, but boy was I surprised! It was REALLY hard for me. I've never shot from prone before and the sitting part was something very unfamiliar too. I spent most of saturday unhappy with my shooting, and not so sure of my scopes zero. So Sunday I tried open sights on my AR and they needed adjusting as well and to be honest I need practice shooting it with the open sights. SOOO I switched back to the 10/22 and was able to get the scope zeroed with the help of one of the Instructors and his training on IMC. It took 18 clicks up and 12 to the right, Then I was on target. At some point in the day something clicked in me, it just all came together and started making sense. My breathing and trigger control started to work for me, Something Scout said about it just made sense and worked. Anyone who says shooting is easy hasn't really shot! My elbows and knees where so sore by the end of Sunday, I'm thinking the padded elbows in my shirt could use some more padding lol.

The history lessons given to us where very well performed, I learned things I didn't learn in school and I now feel a need to learn more! Got a new book on my list.

I Really want to thank Scout, dragit, Andrew and all the instructors that where there, for their time and dedication to this. It really is a good deal!!! I'll definitely be coming back!

And this is why the instructors give so much of their free time.  We love to see people energized about their heritage and the skills our founding generation displayed.   O0

XMM,
Try an Army Surplus or one of the online outlets for some elbow pads, ~$12.00.  These are the hard kind that are padded for elbow comfort and protect elbows from rockets and those pesky "carpet burns."  **)  I know, at my first RBC, Nov '08, Junior Birdman remarked about my bloody red socks "Ah, the Red Badge of Appleseed".

And, on "coming back," YES YES. Plan to come back every month.  And, speaking of RBC, in November, come to the Davilla RBC.  If you liked this weekend, 8 days of intensive marksmanship instruction and American heritage plus Rifle Safety ... plus a host of great instructors including JB ... well, look up the Rifleman Boot Camp AARs section on the forum.  Look at Davilla in particular, and then look at all the others to see what you will miss if you don't make it.   &)

See you in November.

It was really nice meeting you-thanks for writing.

The story will be delayed at least two weeks, while the photographer is on vacation. The airdate will be set when he returns.

All the best,

QuoteHi Tommy,

I hope you are doing well. The story airs tomorrow night at 10pm, as of now. I'm sorry for the delay. Between conflicting schedules and rewrites, it became a lengthy process.

Best,
Chris

This was sent to me last night.  So I believe this will be on tonight in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.  Can someone please record or I think it will be available on WFAA website after airing.

just checked the website. There is a 3 minute video. Some slant is there, with interspersed shots of centerfire rifles being racked amidst comments by the ADL Rep. I'll leave it to you guys to interpret the bit.

The video took a bit of time to load up for me, but once it did, it played through correctly.
