Title: reusable practice ammo question???
Post by: Old Dog on September 16, 2010, 10:10:30 PM
I've used those Speer plastic bullets in my .357 revolvers and they work great (powered by only a large rifle primer and fired at distances of 25 ft. or less through a paper target in front of a blanket backstop) and they seem to work fine for indoor fairly quiet practice.

I've got access to a 40 ft. long building where I could practice indoors at reduced ranges with my M1 or M1A.  Has anyone here found any plastic bullets (or made any plastic reusable bullets for their rifle?  The ones for the .357 use only a large rifle primer (no powder).  It may be that a rifle barrel is too long (too much friction and too much room for pressure expansion/reduction) to get the plastic bullet out of the barrel.

Just curious if anyone's done it or tried it.  Yeah, I know, it'll be like dry firing except there would be holes in the paper.

Not reusable, but cheap.

Has anyone tried this stuff?

Looks interesting particularly for 25 yard training.

Just have this image of plastic shavings, filling the rifle grooves of my barrel making a mess that couldn't be cleaned easily.

Plastic smears shouldn't be hard to get out of the bore.  Just brush it out with some kerosene or other solvent.  Then shoot FMJ through it.  Plastic is softer than steel and softer than copper.  jacketed ammo should easly clear out whatever is left behind after a good brushing.

I wouldn't shoot this stuff through a precision bolt gun but I'd have no problem firing it through an M1A or FAL.  Maybe I'll order a couple boxes with my next GRAFS order.  Need to get some D166 bullets for my M39 soon.

I recall reading an article about using primers (no powder) and the bullets were pieces of glue sticks, for indoor practice.  I suspect it was over at the castboolets website.

Alan:

By malfed, what do you mean?  The stuff is not intended to cycle a rifle.  Would it not even eject or feed manually?
