Title: KD day in Northern Ohio?
Post by: Gopher Boy on August 09, 2010, 04:13:52 PM
After spending some time with the Michigan Instructors over the weekend and it seems I'm always with my Ohio Family in G'burg.  It seems to me that the Michigan and Ohio crews have been working HARD.

I propose a day of fun.  A KD day at G'burg.

I know it's not the only 500 yard range in Ohio, but it's closer for our brother and sisters in Michigan to share the fun.  I think we could have a great day of shooting, and sharing of knowledge.

I think we may even be able to talk the board into letting us shoot at least 1 AQT at distance..... ::)

What say you Michigan?

What say you Ohio?

How about a nice fall day?

Thoughts?

Yes GB, that would be great!

But we'd have to line up the dates carefully. When anyone is shooting on the 500, it shuts down all other ranges. Maybe part of the day, we could spend on the 300 yard range.

Let's talk about it some more.

Ok sounds like some people want this. If it does work out to be able to be done for all to have a fun play day and falls on a day when I am not working do you want a lunch to be made like I do for the AS shoots? Just let me know so I can plan accordingly for it.

The date is the main thing, I think. I've got a PM in to Posterboy, as he's our main SCSC liason. Let's see what develops!

GB,

You know I am in.

Is this to be an Appleseed only event, or open to the public? I feel there would be more draw if it were open to the public, like all of the other scheduled events are at SCSC.

Ilium,

As far as I know, the "one-round at a time" rule is still in effect, unless the shoot is some organized "official" or sanctioned thing. For that reason it'd be great to get it under the auspices of Appleseed, NRA, CMP, or something. *MAYBE* then we can get permission to use full mag's, intermediate firing points, etc. Our best bet here is probably via Appleseed.

Now let's suppose we get something together under the Appleseed name. If we did, maybe it would be reasonable to say that it's open to those who have attended at least on regular Appleseed event. There are upsides and downsides to this idea, I know --- I'm just putting it out there.

But we'd better not get the cart before the horse here. If we're going to do it under "Appleseed", we need to get the appropriate levels of RWVA leadership on board and, of course, the SCSC B.o.D.

I called this a KD day because I wasn't thinking of running an "Appleseed" with a KD component.  I was probing for interest.

There will be a lot of logistics that will have to be worked out and a full COF.  Poster Boy is the guy on point here.  I'm just looking for interest then, I'm will to help pull something together and go with PB to put it before the board.

At this point the interest is:
Me
Ilium
Miki
Fuzzy
Butt Stock
Poster Boy

With this amount of interest it almost makes more sense to have Miki come down as a guess and use the 300 range and then play at 500.

So the main question is....  Who is interested if we can pull this together?

There will be a lot of work to get it done and we can't leave it all to PB.  That just wouldn't be fair.

Fuzzy,

While I can understand your reasoning for wanting to get it under the "auspices of a higher power", but that is not a requirement. The requirement is to present a "Course of Fire" to the board for approval.

Ever watch Kelly's Heros ?  What was it Oddball kept saying to Moriarty? Always with the negative waves!

I think GB put this out there to gauge interest in a KD course of Fire at SCSC. So lets all raise our hands if we are interested.

Hey ya'll,
I saw this post and wanted to offer my own "KDC" (known distance clinic) POI if anyone is interested. It has been fully tested (twice) and can add a serious component to the fun day for all. PM PHenry for details if interested.
Thanks,
PH

If you want to do it under the Appleseed name, just call it an official Appleseed Instructor KD Day, to enhance the knowledge of our instructors.

Just a thought.

It would be great if this worked out!  I know the Instructor KD Day we tried to have in conjunction with the June New Phila shoot didn't get as much interest as we all would have liked.

Shooting out to full distance and not much interest? Say it ain't so! Man, we live for these down here - only thing that stops us from having a half dozen per year, is the weight of events on schedule.

Did they understand that they would get to shoot at and hit Army D targets a long, long way away? The smell of powder - the recoil of a REAL rifle, with nary a rimfire in site - hold me back!  :--- :--- :---

Border Raids allowed?

Actually, they are flat out encouraged. Being the "thief" that I am - I like to work around others to "steal" the best of what I see and add it to my own tool bag - that way people think I am smarter than I really am.  :cool2:

Butt Stock,
Please PM me with your regular Email addy and I will send you my "KDC package".

Scout has made me aware of an excellent possible addition. He does some advanced history during his KD weekend. He discusses how the Rev War progressed and how extended marksmanship played a roll. I just finished reading about a man who served in the Continental Army - one Joseph Plumb Martin. His story telling is superb and he offers a well detailed insight into the sufferings of the average foot soldier during the Rev War. Or, there is SoM's talk on philosophy.

Hmmmm, a new component to the KDC, stolen like the "theif" that I am.  ^-^

Let the IN crew know when you schedule the shoot. I'm pretty booked with the shoots we need for this year, but just maybe....

PH,

I was thinking about what "advanced History" we migth get into. The two ideas you mention are great. Also, what about some of the specific exploits of Morgan's Crew, during the war, e.g., Saratoga. Or as you say, SoM's philosophy lesson. Or, something more on the heritage of marksmanship, not just in Rev. War days but through the 20th century.

Any or all of that would be excellent to inject throughout the day, IMO.

PH: Thanks for stirring this pot!

Oh and YHJ, yes, quite! Border raiders allowed. Especially you. You can give us your excellent heritage of marksmanship lesson!

I know Posterboy is on vacation for a little bit.  When he gets back, we'll see if we can make this a reality!

I can attest that PHenry's COF is a good one with great info.  I made sure to get a copy awhile back to see how it compares to the KD lessons and COF we drew up.

So keep posting if you're interested in this, and we'll see what Posterboy says when he gets back...

Ditto.  I'm in if I can sweet talk my wife.  Between Appleseeds and golf, I've been pretty scarce the last 4-5 weekends.

Must resist temptation to stop at CMP for a Garand.....

This has been shelved temporarily.

If there is going to be a KD day we'll let people know. It may not be an "appleseed" KD day but more likely a "let's get together and shoot distance at G'burg type of event attended by people who also by coincidence happen to be appleseeders"

To find an "official" date on the club's calender would be difficult but a looser arrangement like above is easier to pull off.

Is this going to be an instructor only event or could common folk join in? It sure sounds like fun, the farthest I can shoot is 400 yards at my "home" range.
