Title: Couple of questions, need help
Post by: shaky-jake on December 06, 2007, 09:51:28 PM
I have recently scoped a FAL for the upcoming KW Sniper event.  It shoots very well, however when rested on my ruck sack it will not group at all.  8 inches at 50 yards at best!  The strange thing is that when shooting it off hand, setting, or prone with out the ruck it groups nice.  The range at my house is 48 yards and it will shoot under 1 inch at the distant when I shoot from the prone position with out resting the bareal.

I have had problems attempting to sight it in from the bench.  It just will not group when rested.  Is there some type of rest that I can utilize or should I just not worry about it and shoot the KW event from the prone postion not using a rest?

A quick second quesiton were should a 308 winchester rifle be sighted in at 50 yards to have the correct rifleman zero?  One inch low or one inch high?

Thanks in advance for any help or advance anyone can provide.

Are you resting the rifle on the hand guard or the barrel, beyond the gas block?

Also, if you are resting on a bag, are you still slung up and resting the rifle on your hand, on the bag?

As far as sighting in, with out getting in to a calculator and math.  If you move up to 25 yards, that should be very close to the same zero for 200 yard zero.  If you want a 300 yards zero, you will want to move your point of impact up 3 moa, or 3/4 inch up (keep in mind that the advertised "clicks" on your scope are often inaccurate).

Enjoy the shoot

shake-jake,

I am familiar the FAL.

Your zero should be about 1" higher maybe a tad more at 50yds. for 200yd zero.

BUT, my advice would be to zero it in at 25m to be sure.

In as far as the different groups while rested on a rucksack as opposed to shooting prone, this doesn't make sense.

Yes, one can expect some change in group size but comparing 1" to 8", this doesn't make sense.

However, you've seen good groups while shooting with the sling.  1" is good.

I would say forget finding a rest and earn it with a sling, from what you've stated it's working well for you and this rifle.

A rest, who needs a rest!?

We are riflemen, we don't need no stinkin' rest! ;D

The FAL is a darned good rifle BTW!

Take care of it.

brett out.

I would think that the trajectory of the bullets from a FAL would be the same as for an M1A.  I have a scope on my M1A and I'm sighted in to hit point of aim (POA) at 25 meters and then it hits point of aim again at 250 yds.  The height of the scope of the bore for my M1A may be diffferent than for your FAL.  If the KWSS is run the same as last year you'll get some time in the morning to shoot at 25 meters, sight it in, do some 1" squares, and AQT (or two) and then go over to the pop up range.  Chances are you won't be making elevation adjustments on your scope while shooting at pop ups between 200 and 400 due to time factors.

You'll have a ball.  I'm sure gonna miss it.

Shaky: Are you back to worrying again?

Let me tell you, 99.999% of the rifle owners in this country, if they could shoot an inch group at 50 yards slung up from prone, would never - as in NEVER - shoot any other way - and certainly wouldn't be looking for a 'rest' to shoot from.

Listen to voortrekker, he knows of what he speaks. Rest? Don't need no stinkin' rest!

And M1A4ME is giving you the straight scoop.

You will have plenty of chance to zero your rifle this Sat at the full distance - out to 500 yards, on paper.

So fer gosh sakes, quit worrying about finding a rest, and this and that.

Like I say, a one-inch group at 50 yards is something to be happy about - it is better than rifleman performance!

One small thing: zero with a scope at 25 meters and you're gonna be zeroed closer to 300 yards than 200...

There is a time and a distance for using a rest.

But, Ramseur isn't it. The range only goes out to 500 yards, and you defintely don't need a rest for up to 600 yards at least. Especially if you're 2 MOA groups already.

There is a way to use "support" for that rifle, and I have figured it out already. I have had troubles with zero shift between supported and unsupported with the M16A1 and M16A2 rifles, and I don't mean a little shift, either. About a 6 to 10 MOA shift, at an angle.

I can tell you how I beat it, AFTER the KWSS is done and over. You really need to try it with out the support. Trust me, it's for your own good, as it will boost your confidence to NOT use any support this weekend.
