Title: M1A/M14 Trouble Shooting Guide - PDF format, for now
Post by: Old Dog on December 04, 2007, 09:32:24 PM
I did this excel (copied right out of the Rifleman's Guide) and couldn't seem to get it in a format I could copy here or even attach here except for the PDF type of file.

edited to add - now I've got to figure out how to get it formatted into something that can be added in here and not be all chopped up/screwy looking.

Would it be okay to add some links to on line manuals?  I'm looking at the Ruger 10/22 online manual now.  Folks don't always have manuals or may not know where to get one.  If they can find a link to a manual here then they have the opportunity to be safer, more efficient and better able to learn at an Appleseed or RBC.  I'll start locating links for inclusion here if folks think it's beneficial.

sure, why not.

Lets rock out on just a couple rifle types at a time.

Individual posts for indiviual rifles please, to eliminate confusion and wander.

Jim, how about you write something new?

Go over system op, basic trouble shooting (copy that pdf), etc, etc.  Maybe sight adjustments (no prob with this bad boy, but more of a hassle with other rifle types.

How about something along the lines of "M1A's for Dummies (cooks!)".

Maybe ask Ornell for some help....I would. ;)

I already type it up.  The issue is getting something to look decent on the forum here.  I know from experience you can space/tab all you want and have your post looking great.  However, when you hit the send key the imps of electronic perversion take over and all the neat spacing is out the window.

The reason for copying that out of the guide is because it was in the guide and it was a quick/easy (well, should have been anyway) transer to the forum for use by the instructors.

While it might be nice to create something totally new in the end I'll be writing about something already well written about by others so why spend the time trying (and failing) to out do others with more experience and resources than I've got.  When it comes to trouble shooting guides, cleaning instructions, field stripping, etc. the military manuals (for the big rifles) and the factory owner's manuals (for the rimfires) will be hard to beat.

I'll admit that for some rifles the available literature is kind of scarce.  For example, I could find next to nothing on my SUIT scope for the FAL.  The "operator's manual" had absolutely no info on troubleshooting or disassembly/repair so I sat down in the floor with a couple of clean towels and tools and took it apart (wow, that thing is wild inside - the way it's made and goes together), cleaned it up, made an adjustment or two and put it back together.  As soon as I get the mount straight that SUITs going back on the FAL.

Anyway, if we don't do these in sections that contain info that the instructors find useful at Appleseeds they won't get read/used much.

It's easy to cut and paste sections as laid out in the FM's and TM's (exept for the troubleshooting format) right into these posts.  I'll see what I can find.

Springfield Armory has their entire line of product manuals posted on their website in PDF format.

Links to the manuals are on the bottom left.

ummmm, pictures, ggggggooooooodddddd

Hey, would appreciate input on whether or not you think these pictures with the text and arrows would be helpful to folks unfamiliar with their M1A's or whether or not any of the wording needs to be changed or do I need to add words, description, etc.

Thanks

Something not to overlook here, Jim: The M1A/MI are so close in design and function that you can about use the same troubleshooting and lubrication/cleaning instructions for either rifle.

A list of spare parts would be good, also.

        Must have: firing pin
                        extractor and spring
                        ejector and spring
                        trigger pin
                        hammer pin
                        op rod spring

Except for the op rod spring, the rest can be carried under the buttplate in holes drilled in the stock specifically for them, so you always have them with you.

Keep the rifle cleaned and properly lubricated, and the need for the spare parts is lessened - but you have them, anyway, 'just in case'.

I'd also have on the list a military cleaning kit for the butt - not to clean the rifle with (except in an emergency), but to have the ability to use the 'tool' aspect of the C/K to tighten things that come loose and to fix minor problems, like a bullet stuck in the barrel...

Good stuff, here, on this thread. 8)
