Did I mention MUD???????? We had just over freezing temps, rain, hail, sleet (I think) and of course, wind. Even got a touch of sunlight briefly Sunday.
8 brave souls ventured to the event, out of 14 pregistered. One was not pre-registered, which left us with half no-shows. Not a "summer soldier" or "sunshine patriot" to be seen. I love bad weather at Appleseeds. The shooters that still show up are the best of the lot.
6 returned on Sunday, and the 2 that didn't were a father/son team, and it was the son's birthday. I can understand that one. They did stop by on Sunday, and bank on it, they will be back.
2 of the shooters were young men, just 12 years old, and men they showed themselves to be.
Made 2 Riflemen. One (Saturday) from Long Island, traveled 6 hours, because Calverton sold out. 218 on his FIRST AQT Saturday (what can I say, he'd been practicing). I offered to waive the 2nd Appleseed requirement, and he quickly stepped up. The other was a local gent from the next town north, and we'll see more of him as well. Seeing that he lives within 10 miles of an MI and 2 IIT's, it's a no brainer.
Everybody says they made vast improvement, and the targets showed it. A bunch of equipment issues, and we got some problems fixed. I see some rifle sales in the area in the near future. Most brought a centerfire, though we decided to not go AD Sunday afternoon. They simply shot the centerfires at 25, to put that much to test. And, I went along with it, as I see every one of them being hooked into attending another one soon (probably Jericho or Middlebury this fall, once they heard "400 yards" being mentioned).
Shoot Boss was none other than myself. The rest of the staff was NattyBumpo, who ran most of the event, under my guidance. I wanted to see what he could handle, and he did a bang-up job as usual. We had a brand new IIT on Saturday, forum name Dragunov, he's Blueskys's younger grandson. 15 years old and a hard worker. He wasn't available Sunday, but his older brother was, and he also helped out. These 2 are far from new to the program. Their first Appleseed was Proctor, VT in 2007 (seems we ended up with a high percentage of shooters from that event stepping up over time). Blueskys did her usual Admin work, and brought lunch down, so we wasted little time. Sure is easy when you've got a solid crew to work with.

Glad to hear that Dragunov is in the program now! I seem to remember him from Proctor '07, too. :)

Dragunov was right next to Liz at Proctor. That would be him. That event yielded 3 current SB's (or more), 1 Red Hat that has since moved on, and something like 4-6 current IIT's. All from something around 20 shooters.
Fred, you'll remember Dragunov by how he dresses. Never judge a book by it's cover. **)

Heard that fella from Long Island shot that 218 with a bolt action, and only scored on 39 hits due to a FTF in stage 2 ;)
The aftermath of this event for me was steep. I broke the transmission oil pan on the Jeep, and that trickled down to losing 3rd and 4th gears on it. A new transmission is in it's future.
