Title: AAR Stinson, WV March 20-21 2010
Post by: Spanner on March 22, 2010, 01:04:52 PM

:)  :)  :)

I genuinely hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

This is a stub, just to get it started.  I'll be back with a write-up and pictures.

I'll go ahead and tell you the highlight of my weekend.  It was those two teenagers on the end of the line that went from being unable to keep three rounds in a row on a piece of paper, to scoring high 190s-low200s.  Also, one of the attendees that didn't have anywhere near 13 holes in his first redcoat on Saturday morning, missed one round by a quarter inch on the 400yd target on the last redcoat Sunday.  Every other shot was in the red.  Improvement like that, all the way up and down the line, makes everything worth it.

I spoke with him about that 1 shot on the Redcoat and he said he called that flyer when he shot.  Amazing improvement out of him.  I am talking him into his own 10/22 now!

Absolutely; the improvement that Nate and Dan made was something to behold. Then there were the other highlights, such as the beautiful weather...first WV Appleseed of 2010...great team of instructors...wonderful students...a new Rifleman/IIT...

I'm still working on getting pics posted.

Even though I was completely worn out from the lack of sleep Friday night, I had a blast at my first Appleseed.  Definitely saw improvement in my groups, although fatigue kept them from shrinking as much as they could be.  I'm dying to see what I could do well rested.  I'll be back in April and hopefully will shoot Rifleman.  I came close on Saturday (200) and Sunday (202), but by Sunday I was dragging so much every shot felt like battle just to stay focused on that front sight.

In April, Wifey may be coming down, and I may be joined by a guy from work.  If my other buddy doesn't have any missions dumped on him, he'll be there as well.

Later,
Chrome...

The first day of Spring launched the Stinson opener for the 2010 WV schedule. A fine group of instructors and students were blessed with perfect weather over the weekend, along with nature's beauty...

We had 9 students both days--4 no shows--and the instructors even managed to squeeze a little shooting in at the end of each day. Saturday evening's "gravel project" was a smashing success, courtesy of siglite and his Liberty Training Steyr.  :---
( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=462DVCTBQAE ) Aside from supplying us with cool "toys" to try out, siglite excels at holding tarps up  ^-^...

Among other things...

As was mentioned in an earlier post, these 2 young fellas--Nate and Dan--were a highlight of the weekend, going from almost nothing to consistently scoring 190-200...

They even squeezed out high score during the team shoot; earning an Issac Davis patch apiece  O0...

Alex, another young lad who is knocking on the Rifleman's door, and a regular at Stinson, shot a high score of 205. Among other things, Alex is an expert on the matter of "zombies"; always pop quizzing me about the subject!  ;D Ever vigilant...

And very capable from any position...

Something caught Nate's attention down range too. A mutant "zombie" perhaps?  :D...

After a grueling encounter with imaginary ghouls, the "falcon" laid out the 3rd strike to an attentive--albeit worn down--audience...
What's that unidentified "thing" sticking it's tongue out over "falcon's" shoulder?
Falcon, you better pick up the pace; I swear that "thing" is getting closer...Alex!  :sos:

After concluding his well presented history talk, emphasizing "choices" and the altered mindset of the Regulars toward the Colonists, wvmmfalcon did some one-on-one with George. This gentleman was a pleasure to work with and showed much progress by Sunday. If George had optics or shooting glasses, I'm sure his scores would have jumped 20+ points, placing him in Rifleman territory...

Charles exercised good muzzle control, as Chrome--our newest WV volunteer--took the AR for a ride...
Our Shoot Boss Spanner kept things moving along, packing a lot of quality instruction into 2 days, even allowing time for brickhouse and others to have a try at "Thumper"  :)...

Wil, our point man at Beckley Gun Club (our newest location this year) stopped by Sunday to tune-up for next month's Patriot's Day event. That was a sweet AR LTR that Wil operated; although the addition of optics appears to be mandatory for the elusive Rifleman patch. Right Wil?  ;)...

Dan took a breather before we proceeded with my favorite string of fire...

Standing and delivering  :~

As we know; Appleseed will take you from a mere rifle owner, to the level of Rifleman. Nate demonstrates the difference a day in our program makes; showing great form on Sunday  O0...

And as we also know; persistence and dedication--some "glass" doesn't hurt   ;)--will eventually put a smile on the most "hardened" Mountaineer  ^:)^...

Do I spy a new "pumpkin' head" amongst those fine instructors?  ;D  Great job vanrichten!  Thanks for taking the mantle ..:..

I want to also give a big "Thank You" to Spanner (not pictured), wvmmfalcon, siglite, and brickhouse for making our first WV shoot in 2010 a successful and memorable one.  O0  I appreciate every one of you students for your hard work and making this all worthwhile for us.  :)

Way cool: a number of AR15.com buddies got a chance to match faces to screen names at a WV Appleseed.

Charles, Joe, Chrome, vanrichten, Ball & Dummy & wvmmfalcon.

Nate & Dan

siglite & NC17 (prone).  Note this is the only photo that provides evidence that West Virginia possesses a (7 MOA?) horizon.

Rifleman vanrichten (225!) with siglite, wvmmfalcon and brickhouse.

I still need to upload more pics (I haven't forgotten you, George).

to be continued...

Please get registered ASAP so we can figure out the logistics for our instructor staff, OK?

Chrome, I'm glad we finally got to meet in person. As you stated, you almost made Rifleman, but that lack of sleep thing is a real "deal breaker".  ;)  I know you'll get it next month...

Wifey and Will are both waiting on work/mission schedules.  The guy from work needs more convincing...

So, since it was brought up - I figured I could as least take the time to scan these in.  The only problem, our large format scanner is only gray-scale but it still gives the idea.  I assume I am not breaking any copyright laws by doing this, however if so, please feel free to delete them.  I think my highlights would include vanrichten forcing me into attending the event, the instructors - who despite their best efforts, didn't get "upset" when I just didn't seen to get the training down on Saturday.  History "classes" were entertaining and informative and team effort shooting was exciting (could have done with a few more rounds of that just for a good mix).  As you can tell by the scans of the redcoats - improvement can on Sunday from who knows where.  The end results has cost me $$$ in the purchase of a new Ruger 10/22 and VCL 10/22 TG2000 and VCL 10/22 Exact Edge Extractor and a burning desire for the UPS man to hurry up and get here!  ;D

Saturday morning, afternoon and Sunday morning, afternoon targets are attached.

armedarchitect,

It's improvement like that in appleseeders that keeps me coming back.  Seeing that kind of improvement in the space of two days is a glowing testament to both the program, and the teachable attitude of the student.  The difference between Saturday morning, and Sunday evening's targets justify every minute I've put into Appleseed as well as all future effort.

Too late...we know WHO you are and WHERE you live...the Appleseed police will be paying you a visit!  @&)  ;D

Hey man, I'm glad you popped in! I didn't get to observe your shooting too much, since you were on the other end of the line, but those targets speak for themselves. Keep an eye on that dragging wood. Even though I wasn't officially instructing, I still notice things. ;) Keep practicing dry firing and your positions at home; you should score Rifleman at the next Appleseed.

Like siglite said, seeing dramatic improvements like yours is a large part of why we do what we do. Now that you're registered on the forum, I'll add you to the members list on the WV board. It was a pleasure meeting you; hope you make it to Stinson again sometime.
