Title: M1A butt plate
Post by: artkat2 on March 13, 2010, 03:35:21 PM
Hi All
I just bought a new M1A (SA) that has the synthetic stock and rubber recoil pad/butt plate. This pad seems to be about.75" or more thick. With a plain shirt this seems ok when dry firing, but last night I used my shooting jacket, and it seems that the length of pull was slightly long for me.
Question is, can I replace the rubber recoil pad with a GI butt plate on this stock. If I can, how thick is the GI butt plate?
I'm certainly not married to the rubber pad, so replacing it with a steel butt plate wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit.
Thoughts? Ideas? I'd be glad to hear 'em! BTW first trip to the range will be tomorrow!
Thanks,
  Andy

The good news is, yes, you can replace the rubber with an original GI steel buttplate - and lose about 1/2" of pull in the process.

IIRC, the upper screw hole in the stock has a peg in it which you'll have to pull out, and use a bolt and nut to secure the upper half of the steel BP to the stock (it's not really necessay - the lower screw will hold it in place fine).

Personally, I think the good news is that I just happen to know of a guy who sells that kind of stuff at real nice prices!   O0
.5" seems just about right, thanks Fred the helpful!

You definitely want that butt plate.  It can help firm up your prone position a lot with it flipped up.  I bought another Loaded Springfield model last year and Dinky Dao hooked me up with a butt plate she had laying around.  I'd pick one up from Fred's store post-haste if I were you. :)

I bought a couple of spares from Numrich a couple of years back.  Looks like they still have them, the upper screw and nut for the synthetic stocks that is.

I have that same model M1A, with the black synthetic stock, and I swapped the rubber butt plate out for a GI one too.  On mine, the GI butt plate installed no problem with the screws that came with the rifle and were originally holding on the rubber pad.  I didn't need a nut or anything.
