I know that we train and teach iron-sights. But I had a question nonetheless.
When I've read about optics mounted on an M1 Garand, it's always been a side-of-the-receiver-mount with the scope offset to the left relative to the bore. This allows for the en-bloc clip to be loaded and to eject when the last cartridge is spent. The problem I see with this is that one has two angels to adjust for when compensating for elevation, since the scope is aimed in two directions differently from the bore, up and left.
That being said: my question is, could one mount optics in front of the receiver which had an extended eye-relief? This would allow the action to function normally without the optics getting in the way, and you could easily learn your clicks to jump from 200-500 with one knob (10 clicks up) instead of needing to know, "I'm 10 clicks up, and 4 clicks left to be on at 400."
Or am I just being lazy?

It would make sense to me to sight in the scope so that it's parallel to the bore. As in: the center axis of the scope is offset from the bore axis by 2", so sight it in so that your POI is 2" to the right of your POA. At 200 and beyond, 2" is neglible for shooting 4 MOA targets.
The scout style seems like the obvious choice to me. I have had a chance to look through two so far and while the M1 won't ever fit Col. Coopers scout criteria, a scout scope is a good choice for those with eye issues. So far I'm lucky in that the sight radius of the M1 is sufficient for my tired eyes to still be able to focus.
CMP sells a scout mount. The Burris 2.75x scout scope seems to be a ppular optic.
I have mine set up with a scout scope (burris 2-7x). No complaints, though I might want to upgrade to the 3-12 for the lighted reticle.
I use the scout mount CMP sells.

A couple of companies make a "scout scope" mount for the barrrel of an M1 Garand. They replace the lower handguard (the one closest to the receiver for you new M1 folks). Ameaga Ranges makes one. That's what you can buy from the CMP or from Ameaga Ranges (or even ebay, that's where I bought mine). I can never remember the other company that make a similar mount (that's not the one I bought but folks say it is an excellent mount as well). Take a look at my avatar. It's my Dec. '44 SA M1 Garand with the Ameaga Ranges mount and a cheap 2X8 (or so) pistol scope on it. Works like a charm. The QD Warne scope rings allow me to quickly remove the scope use the iron sights (just to prove it works ;)) and put the scope back on with no loss of zero (as long as the scope goes back on the same slots on the mount).
CMP has the best price on the Ameaga Ranges mount
