Title: Ruger 10/22 extended scope mount
Post by: Simballo on November 05, 2007, 12:22:53 PM
During a recent Appleseed I found the scope I was using was too far back to get proper eye relief.

DonD recommended an extended scope mount from Brownell's. This was about $56 plus shipping.

I think  is a Volquartsen mount and Volquartsen has the silver ones discounted to $27 and $9.99 shipping.

anyone have one of these?  Have any luck with them?  How do they interfere with the Tech SIghts or do they?

I think you use either the Tech site OR a scope.

I don't have a Tech site. I couldn't get one before the Appleseeds I planned to attend. The news was there was a 3 month wait.

I found the sites on a Ruger 10/22 to be of little value to my old eyes so I upgraded to a scope so I could better see the little targets.

Upon using the Ruger supplied scope base for the 10/22 and the GI sling, I found my eye had well encroched upon the eye relief of the scope. I needed the scope to be further forward to see the entire exit pupil.

During the Evansville, IN Appleseed I had only a tiny exit pupil to aim the rifle with. To understand this, hold the scope up to your eye at a normal distance of about 3 inches. You'll see a magnified image across the entire occular lens.

Now move the scope closer to your eye (but don't poke yourself in the eye!) and you'll the the image becomes smaller. Imagine this image being about 1/4 of the distance of the occular lens and you'll see what I looked at for two days to shoot AQT's with.

No one understood why I kept shooting the wrong target. They all look alike when you see just a tiny piece of them. I finally bought a black magic marker and physically put an X on my target to keep it straight.

I wasted a lot of time verifying my target rather than aiming.

This mount adds about three inches to the front of the factory Ruger 10/22 mount. Those three inches are in the form of a cantilever and require the removal of the 10/22's iron front site.

Hope this illuminates the purpose of this mount.

Don't know if it would help you or not, but you can buy an extended buttplate for the Ruger wooden stocked 10/22 and mini14s.  I put one on my 10/22 and it worked out nicely to make the rifle seem a "little bigger" for me.  Got mine off ebay.  Pretty cheap really.  Uses the Ruger screws to attach it to the stock.

I use the Burris 10/22 extended scope base.  It moves the scope about 1" farther forward.  It extends past the reciever and over the barrel by that ammount.

It uses all of the mounting holes in the reciever so you can only have a Scope if you use the base I have.

It was $18.95 plus shipping from MidwayUSA.com

I'm happy with it.

To those using the supplied OEM Ruger mount and suffering from eye-relief issues:

Using the Choate-made extended butt plate/pad may help if your arms fit.  Most adults will find it so, but kids most likely will not.  Keep this in mind if your LTR is likely to be used as a loaner, as it should be, hopefully.

Weaver makes extended scope mounts, both see-under (requires cheek riser and will fit the widest diameter scope) and low height.  If your scope is within about 1/2" of being right with the OEM mount, this might be an alternative.

Personally, I'm waiting for the promised Scout scope mount, which will be very nice and allow both Scout scope/red dot/reflex sight and Techsight.  Might even be just the ticket for scope+NVD combo.  Might make a nice 'hush puppy" with a sound suppressor.

I may be responsible for the delayed introduction of this item, as I clued the mfr into the TechSights during their prototype stage, as well as the LTR concept, supplying them with links to this site and the appropriate threads.  Might be that they had to do some re-designing...

If so, then maybe we'll wind up with a better product right out of the gate.

Chief AJ has a Scout Mount that he puts on 10/22's. Looks as if it would work great with Tech Sights.

Simballo,

My cousin and I shot next to you then at the shoot in Evansville.  I shot the M1A Sunday and my cous shot the bolt .22.  I know what you mean.  It was my cousin's target a couple of times you shot. LOL.  That mount seemed sure stable though.  I am not for sure if it will be something I go for if I can't use the Tech Sights too.

More than a couple of times!  :-[

Really embarassing.   ;D He was very good natured and very kind about it.

I was anxious about the type of people I'd find at one of these events, (read "kooks") but everyone has been simply outstanding individuals from the beginners up to the instructors.

The new mount seems to solve the problem, but I'll find out for sure this weekend when I re zero the rifle/scope. Assuming, of course, my elbows have healed enough!

I bought a cheap little set of $10 or $12 soft elbow pads at Dick's Sporting Goods prior to the Sept. 2006 Appleseed at Stuart, VA.  They've so far lasted me through that Appleseed, the UN Shoot and the WW2 Sniper School at Ramseur last fall, the Feb. 2007 RBC at Ramseur and numerous shooting sessions in other locations.

One tip though, the only time I ever got sore elbows was when I left a long sleeved t-shirt covering my arms/elbows and put the pads over the t-shirt material.  Wow! did that ever make my elbows burn and it didn't take too long.  After that I always put the elbow pads against my skin and no issues.

I used elbow pads Sunday, but wore them over a long sleeve shirt.

I had some soreness Saturday so I put them on Sunday and really tore them up. I'm still wearing a bandaid on the left. :(

I got a set of knee and elbow pads at Walmart for $10. They were made for skateboarders. I understand from Wrongway Walmart also sells a set for gardeners. He loaned me a set to try and they seemed fine.

Does the forum software automatically change Richard's (nickname) Sporting Goods to Jerk's Sporting Goods?  Just curious whether it's the system or an administrator who doesn't live along the east coast and doesn't realize there really is a Richard's (nickname) Sporting Goods chain.  Glad my name's not Richard.  I'd hate like the dickens to be called a jerk everytime someone PM'd me or asked me a question on this forum.

At Boot Camp #1, I used the cheap elastic elbow pads from Wal-Mart and also used them at Toccoa Appleseed #1 plus for practice at the range. They are still in great shape but dirty.
I never saw a need for knee pads and didn't use them but the same pads will work for knees. Just get a larger size.

Mike W. attended BC #1 with me and used a shooting jacket . His elbows still rubbed raw and became bloody. We made a trip to Wal-Mart and got him some of the same pads and bandages for his elbows. He then had no more problems for the rest of BC.
He also didn't wear knee pads and didn't need them.

We don't have to worry about the democrats.  It's the computers and software we're building that will get rid of us someday.

I plan on buying that mount and putting a little red dot or a inexpensive scope on my LTR.  I have not received my sights for it and I could not do any better than 1.5 inch groups at the shoot with them buckhorns.
Has anyone has success with a red dot on the LTR?

you guys ever shop at Rimfiresports.com?  They give free shipping in the USA.

Red dots should work fine on the 10-22, although, depending on their construction and height above bore, you might find that a cheek riser is required to get a good, quick, and natural cheek weld.
Another issue is the size of the dot.  For real-world applications, such as close-quarters work, the dot should be farily large in terms of MOA that it "covers".  On the range, however, the smaller the better, down to 1 or 2 MOA.  You will find that a 5 MOA dot covers the 1" square at 25M, not an ideal situation to say the least.  Yes, you can work around this problem, if you know what you are doing, but if the rifle is intended to also be a loaner to a newbie, such a large dot could be very frustrating.

Folks, keep your loaner rifles simple.

Tech Sights or plain jane low power scopes work best. I would recommend no higher than 4 power, and that's pushing it.

I find the Leupold mount to allow for enough eye relief on my 10/22.

Well I was fortunate to have decent weather Saturday and was able to sight in the Ruger 10/22 with its new scope and extended mount.

It works just as well as DonD suggested it would. I have a full view of the occular lens and hope to have no more trouble keeping my shots on my target.  ;D

Thanks to all for the other good ideas. I'll keep them in mind for future rifle problems.

I took out my 10/22 with a 4MOA reddot on it.  While 4MOA is too large, I did enjoy being able to shoot with something other than the stock sights.  My eyes felt as though they were useful again.  I wonder how well I would do with a 2 or 3 MOA reddot.  Interestingly enough though, I was able to clean the gun last night with the reddot still on there.  I kinda liked that.  I will be looking into that extended mount though.  I started having some extraction problems b/c I hadn't cleaned the gun since the Evansville shoot.  LOL  Has anyone got a specific life span on the extraction spring and extractor?  Has anyone ever replaced the spring regularly?

Many years ago, I gave my Grandson a 10/22 for X-mas. He was 9 yrs. old. Now he is grown with kids of his own.
He has fired 1000's of rds. through it over the years and was not carefull about keeping it clean. It would get so clogged it would slow down and only then did he clean it.
Now his oldest son ( my Great-Grandson) is using it.
The point of this is the fact that it has never had any parts fail over the years of use and is still going strong.

I am learning that with the ammo I am firing (CCI blazer) that I need to brush the holt head every few hundred rounds.  It likes to gather junk right under neath where the extractor wraps around the bolt head.  New wrinkle, simple fix.

I have a 10/22 and I just mounted a BSA 3-9X40 scope on the rifle.  I used medium scope ring mounts.  At 25M target (100 yard silhouette) , the scope up adjustment is all the way up and it shoots still 2" below the intended target (cross hairs center silhouette).   How does one correct?  Is is just a simple replacement with "high" scope ring mounts?

Conventional wisdom says use as low a set of rings as will let the lens bells clear the rest of the rifle.  Easier to get a good cheek weld, especially with a standard stock, not one of the aftermarket ones made for scope use.

It's unusual that the mount seems to be so mis-aligned with the barrel.  Possible causes:

1.  Something is kitty-wompus (technical WECSOG term) with the scope.  Have you considered borrowing another scope, a known good one, mounting it, and seeing if you're anywhere close with that one?

2.  Something is kitty-wompus with the mount, as it's attached to the receiver.  Maybe something onder one end of the mount bar, or one of the screws not seating right?

If neither of these, then experiment with putting a shim (one or two thicknesses, small pieces cut from an aluminum soda can, might work well) under the rear end of the mount, will make the gun "shoot higher."

Let us know - I love mysteries!

Use a soda can and make a shim fold it so it is two or three layers hammer it flat and put it under the rear ring. Mine fills the full bottom half of the ring and the scope sits on top.
This worked well on one of my rifles
Snug the ring cap down well
This should now give you some elevation room to work with

Thank you for all your inputs... I did the coke can suggestion.  That corrected it but I had to use 4 strips under the front site to correct.  I really did not like that approach, so I contacted BSA and they provided me the below internal adjustment to move up the scope.  Did this and fixed my problem.  I hope this helps someone else on the forum.

1) Turn the turret adjustment knob to "point 1 extreme" or until it can not turn any further.

2) While holding the turret in place; rotate the scope. Counting each 360 degree rotation it takes for your scope to reach "point 2 extreme" or the opposite point that the scope will not longer rotate.

3) Divide the number of scope rotations by 2. Then rotate the scope to that point. You should do this to both turrets as it will set both crosshair axis' to point 0'0'.

4) Remount and rezero your scope.

Interesting... :)

The scope I have is a Vista scope (made in Korea)  ???
I had to add two shims under the rear ring to get it to zero (it was shooting very low) with more room for come-ups at a longer range (it really shoots well now)  ;D

The problem I will have is I do not have turrets just a coin slot type  :(
I'll play around with it this winter  :)

Thanks for the info my air rifle has a BSA scope with turrets and is not shooting groups tight enough for me I will mess with that one too  ;)

BTW
N1YYO here 73  :)

I would think that a 4MOA Red Dot on low should work better with a 6:00 hold.
