Title: Austin, TX January 9th and 10th (AAR)
Post by: voortrekker on January 11, 2010, 12:01:04 AM
BUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

The weekend's weather was unusually cold for we Central Texans.

Driving to the range on Saturday it was 18 degrees at 6:00AM.  Once the sun came out into the clear sky, the temperature warmed up to high 30's.

Thankfully the north wind had pretty much stopped Saturday morning.

Despite the really unusually cold weather for Central Texas, we had a good turn out of Americans WILLING get out of that warm cozy bed and step on to the Rifleman's path.

We had 32 shooters attend, 3 had attended prior Appleseed shoots.

Two Riflemen were forged on the anvil of the AQT :  Tommy and Alex  GOOD JOB GENTLEMEN!!!!!!

They both shot "expert" scores with centerfire rifles.  (both of whom had attended prior Appleseed shoots as well).

Several others were knocking on the door towards earning their patch.  Keep persisting everyone, you will earn your patch too!

The Instructor cadre consisted of :
1) Shoot Boss = voortrekker
2) Red Hat = alonso1
3) Orange Hat = spmcpeek, doubleLL, starfox, austin, and Big-D

Alonso1 did a really good job of telling the 1st and 3rd Strike and voortrekker did the 2nd Strike story.

Spmcpeek did stellar job on the Dangerous Old Men stories and was Line Boss all day on Sunday.

All the orange hats performed very well in keeping the line safe and providing instruction.  THANKS Y'ALL!!!

We had a really good group of Americans who participated with "can do" attitudes that greatly contributed to the success of the event.  As a result, there was marked improvement in rifle marksmanship by all the shooters by the end of the weekend.

Tommy, who shot expert, decided to join the ranks of the Texas Instructor cadre on Sunday.  Outstanding, Tommy!!  I know you will be an excellent instructor and we are very pleased to have you on board.

Thanks VT:
Even with the COLD that's not so amazing.  On the bright side all that mud in December was "hard Pack" in January!   **)  Texans understand that Extreme Weather is just another Opportunity to test equipment and personnel under actual conditions.  Two New Riflemen prove that.  Congratulations!  O0

Wish I could have been there.  But, just so you'll know, I never miss a chance to test equipment and personnel.  In Shreveport, LA, Saturday morning the it was 19 deg at the gas pump.  Diesel flowed like molasses in New Hampshire so I had plenty of time to talk Appleseed with the guy on the other side of the pump.  Look for a new Appleseed Range in Shreveport in a few months.

And, look for me back at ARC!

Voortrekker is right- Burrr.  My husband and I drove in from Fort Worth to work this shoot as orange hats. We both had on 4 layers of clothes. I believe everyone was thankful when the sun came out and no wind.

I was impressed to see so many and ladies out; in this weather nonetheless. We had about 6 or 7 ladies who came out; a few had never shot a rifle before. All of them showed improved and stuck it out for 2 days - Way to go ladies!!  One young lady who came out with her brother and father deserves a mention for not only persevering through the weekend, but showing amazing improvement.

Alonso and Voortrekker did a great job instructing and telling the strikes. Special thanks to Voortrekker for providing hot dogs on Saturday for lunch. We had a good student to instructor ratio which allowed for a lot of personal instruction. I felt everyone walked away with more than what they came with.  For those shooters who were right on that cusp in the 190-200's keep working, you will make it next time.

As an orange hat, I want to thank the shooters for helping me become a good instructor; I know I walked away from this shoot with a head full of knowledge on how to better explain techniques, shot analysis and site adjustments!

I wanted to thank all the instructors that attended. This was my first Appleseed event and myself, neighbor, and father in law were all in attendance. We really did learn a lot and would recommend this to anyone. I definitely left a better shooter than I came.

Oh and for those thinking about going in winter... DON'T CAMP, GET A HOTEL!

I did have one question and I am sorry if this is posted somewhere else... What was the website for the "green cards"? I would like to send in my info as soon as I receive my membership card to the RWVA.

Again thank you to all the instructors. You did a fantastic job.

Hi all,
What a great shoot!!!  I would first like to thank all the instructors Redhats and Orangehats, with out all of you I don't think that we would have had such a great weekend of shooting.  I know that I improved a ton from the first shots on the Redcoats, which I hit paper only 3 times out of the 13.  To the last shots on the Redcoats where I was able to take out all the Redcoats and the head shot!  YA!!  Yes the weather was unusually cold for TX, but you guys all know we have global warming going on.  Just imagine what how cold it would have been if there wasn't global warming.  I would like to say that I really enjoyed the shoot and haven't stopped telling people about it.  I hope that we can do another one here in Austin some time soon.  I already sent an email to the board of directors of the Austin Rifle Club thanking them for hosting the shoot, and asking that they allow more there.  I encourage everyone to do the same, here is the link to their website:  http://www.austinrifleclub.org/  Just click on the Board of Directors under Contact Info on the left hand side, then click on Board of Directors again and it will allow you to write the email.  Imagine if we are able to get Appleseed in Austin on a regular basis, we will all be doing our part in "Keeping Austin Weird"!  That would be great a bunch of Appleseed Rifleman all over Austin.

I can't wait for the next shoot, so that I can get my Riflemans patch.  Congrats to the 2 gentlemen that received it, I think everyone was happy for them and envious to.

Yep, it was cold.

When I first arrived at the range with Spmcpeek, we did not think anyone would show up.  Boy, were we wrong! over 30 hardcore shooter's arrived within an hour ^:)^

The ages ranged from a 13 year old young lady named Emily to some gentlemen in their 60's and everything in between.

Voortrekker was the Shoot Boss and he did a good job of keeping our highly motivated Orange Hats (IIT's) involved with the program.  The ITT's who weathered the big freeze to make this shoot a success were; BigD, Austin, Spmcpeek, doubleLL and StarFox.

As always, the day started off with Red Coats, squares, CAQT's and ended with an AQT.  We had some good scores and plenty of improvement.

On Sunday afternoon, Voortrekker initiated the AQT grind.

We ended the day with two new Riflemen!  One new Rifleman (tnewty) has already contacted me and inquired about taking the steps needed to become an ITT O0

We also had some folks who were knocking on the door.  Steven M had a high score of 194 and Angelo topped out at 200.

The shooter's advised they enjoyed the weekend and learned a little about our History while improving their marksmenship skills.  Several stated they were certain they would be attending future Appleseeds.

Until next time, keep those actions clear and I'll see you on the beach!

SPMcPeek and VT thanks for getting all the pics of the weekend up, now I have something to show everyone.  I can't wait to bring more people to the next shoot/history lesson about why we should all be riflemen.

PM sent.  I was hoping someone would post about that on here.

A big thanks to all the instructors!  O0 Y'all are great and I made a huge improvement in my rifle marksmanship during the shoot.  I hope there will be another one some time soon because I'd love to go back and get my rifleman patch and hopefully work in the time to be an instructor some day.  I was impressed by the attention to safety and the time spent directly helping out individuals, too.  I also met some nice people who live locally, so I may have some new shooting buddies.

Great shoot! Congratulations to our new Riflemen!

What a beautiful range!

I'm especially proud of Alonso - I know he prefers the temp a BIT warmer.  ;)

Maybe one year I won't be closing payroll and will get to participate in January. :wb:

I can't make April, new baby on the way about then, but I'm hoping for May or June.  I'm planning to get my dad to go with me this time.
