Title: Good O/U 12 Ga
Post by: Gumballhead on December 11, 2009, 01:14:15 PM
Hi,

Hope this is the right place.  I'm in the market to get a good O/U 12 Ga for trap/skeet, but I don't want to spend a mint to get one.  I've been seeing some deals in the market for Remington Spartans (made by baikal?) for under $400, and some from steoger for about the same.  I see a lot of info here/there, but remember how our great member base is, and thought i'd throw this out there.

I'm trying to stay around $500 or less.

Thanks!

GBH

The Baikal O/U is a very nice piece, the last price I saw (last weekend) in central Illinois was $359 out the door......

Single trigger, which allows you to select barrels is a nice touch, & they are awesomely accurate......for a scattergun..... :--- @)

I'm hearing that the Customer Service from the Baikal group is speedier than Remmie.....have had a bolt for repair with them (Remmie) for going on a year now..... >:(

Just dropped a dozen pheasant with the loaner Baikal here on Sunday.....dog points, bird flies, you point, bird falls..... :~
I don't see how it can get any better... O0

YMMV.....
Good luck, and good shooting!

I got a used Stoeger Condor about a year ago, and walked out with it and the scratches on the stock for $200.  I love it for quail hunting.  The prescratched stock is a blessing; I don't have to worry about it when using the muzzle to nudge a dead quail out of a thorny mesquite bush.  Not at all like my old Browning Lightning in that respect...

My advise:
Handle as many O/U guns as possible - when you pick up a high quality tool you'll instantly understand the differences between most lower priced guns and the higher priced guns.

If you're gonna walk 10 miles carrying a Baikal, do some push ups starting 10 minutes ago - heavy, tight guns to say the least.

CZ offers some nice guns that can be had in/around your price point.  A friend has a 20a O/U that he got for under $400  IIRC - I'd have to check the sources, etc to verify but it is a nice gun

If I get a sxs in 12ga, it will be a CZ

Oh - don't skip over used guns - some good deals out there but do your homework on how to buy

Good luck in your search

I'd get a CZ before I'd get any of the others you listed.  However I've have a Lambier (probably spelled wrong) and it's a real gem.  I'd still be using it as my main shotgun if it wasn't a right handed gun and I'm a lefty.

I'm happy with my Spartan SPR310.  Have about 1000 rounds through it - all sporting clays.  Points well, bank-vault solid, only down side is the ejectors - they'll toss empty hulls a good 20 feet.  For the money, I think it's hard to beat - lots of features for such a low price point.
