Another fine event in College Station TX. Thanks to Steve the land owner for hosting another successful Appleseed event.
After Registration, the first strike, and the safety rules, we started the day with a Red Coat and two 1 inch squares. we had 24 shooters on the line which to me was impressive considering it was opening weekend of Gun Deer Season, and the weather was perfect. Sir Not Appearing In This Film (Steve) called the line and the shoot was on. the first shots went down range around 9:15 am. Most of the shooters were not happy with the results of the redcoat, with only 4 that were 100 yard shooters. Others hit one or two shots in the other silhouettes and a few head shots, but like I said most were not happy with the results. Once the instruction began it was like trying to drink from a firehose. We kept on with the instruction and sure enough most of them started improving. At lunch we gave the second strike and reviewed some of the next course of fire. By the end of day one we were able to get in one AQT, another red coat and the third strike of the match before the sunlight was gone. It was close but we were able to squeeze it in.
On Sunday 15 shooters returned for the completion of the training. We started with a redcoat and 2 more one inch squares. Overall most were improving but we still needed to work on those 6 steps and keeping their NPOA. After a few more drills we shot a total of 5 AQTs . with many scores increasing. Congratulations to Philip Stunz for making Rifleman score. Also we want to welcome Mickey Tomlin (The_Viking) for stepping up and receiving an orange hat and beginning his IIT journey.
hope to see ya'll down the trail.
Sleepy Joe
This was indeed a VERY informative & fun weekend.
Our instructors, sleepy Joe & Sir Not Appearing In This Film (Steve) were really good & very helpful. Offered quite a bit of 1 on 1 with the turnout that we had!
The history lessons - WOW!! I think my fav character was the white-haired sniper riding the white horse in front of the regulars!
As sleepy Joe said, it was like drinking from a firehose. Kinda reminded me back in Oct '87 when I was in USAF Basic Trng in San Antonio! &) Barking out commands, LOADS of information...but not quite the same level of hazing!! :)
Day one - my redcoat targets, meh...so - so! I remained consistent @ 100y. At least I hadn't forgotten ALL that military drilling. O0
The sighters - wow! if I was lucky, I was shooting an 8MOA! geez...gotta work on that one!
More drills...starting to tighten up!!
By the end of the day, I think I had figured out how to stick a straw in the firehose & start drinking from it!
Day 2 - greeted by some of Steve's cows! Mooooooo, RIGHT outside the window @ about 6am! (pic below)
redcoat targets...still consistent @ 100y! I gotta work on those 'distant' shots & $$ shots(400y)! (I'm gonna nail that quarter shot @ 250y!!!) :~
sighters - after a good night's rest, MAN, I was getting it down!
AQT - starting working on it...well, I should have shot the AQT 1st thing in the am!! >:D oh well, as they say, "A rifleman persists!" I'll have that badge yet!!!
After the Card shot, we ran through a handful more on the AQT then we had to bail! We had a blast & looking forward to doing more of these!
I did accept the Orange hat & looking forward to future events, conrtibuting to teaching others about the history of our great country, aiding others in 'getting involved' & protecting the rights that were handed down to us!
It was a blast meeting others out there & congrats to Phil on the Rifleman Patch!
enclosed are a handful of pics - enjoy
Day 1 (1-7)
1 - ruffin it in the pasture, by the lake, under the oak tress
2 - Ms. VIKING in prone
3 - Right side of the line
4 - Left side of line
5 - From the targets looking back to the firing line
6/7 - playing around w/ some self-timed shots! I really wanted to do one of those flash fired shots, but really needed a remote trigger! ::)
Day 2 (8-
8 - Cow Greeting in the morning!
9-11 'carding the shot' - this was a fun exercise! really drives home the importance onf NPOA! I almost shot better 'blind' than I did looking down range!
12/13 - left/right side of firing line
14 - 'carding the shot' w/ Mrs. VIKING
Thanks to Sleepy Joe and SNAITF for all the help. I'll be back at the next one in College Station to see if I can get a bit more consistency. It was a bit disconcerting to have my rifle safety get stuck on right as we were going to start shooting the AQTs on Sunday, but Steve bailed me out with a loaner LTR. His wasn't quite the same as mine, though the stock he had fits me better than my own.
I will get my consistency on the AQT up to speed and then join yall on the IIT trail.
Great event! Much thanks to Joe and Steve for taking the time and effort pass along some valuable information. Phil, congrats on your Rifleman score and Viking, hope to see you instructing at a future Appleseed.

more photos :)
I keep trying to add more photos ... but it times me out
If anyone is monitoring this topic, may I ask if there are any plans to do another College Station, TX shoot in the winter / spring 2010 time frame ?
I'm new here, inexperienced in this particular board, but I assume I can be sent a PM if you have details ?
We did Davilla, enjoyed it greatly, but this one is MUCH closer to our home. Plus more of my friends could be persuaded to come if this one were held regularly.
Many thanks,
Texas Minuteman
There will be an event at College Station on April 17-18.

Awesome. I will get The Word out up at A&M and get flyers out around the quad to see if we can get more of them out. I was disappointed at the last Appleseed in CS that there were only a couple students, and none of them for the Corps of Cadets.
Great News ! Same place as before ?
As much as we enjoyed Davilla, this will be significantly closer for us. Maybe I can even entice friends to come being that it's not so far.
Thanks !
Texas Minuteman
Glad to see another event in CS. I'm participating in MS150 that weekend otherwise I would be there. I bet I could get a couple of friends to attend though. I'll get the word out down here.
Steve has landed additional events at his range including hosting the Larue Tactical Three Gun Texas shoots. He is supposed to be back home this coming weekend and told me he will provide the additional Texas dates by the beginning of next week, so if you are looking at putting the Colllege Station location on your "to attend" list, check back at this time next week. Thanks Texas folks for working hard to get our state into the forefront of the Appleseed Push.
Scout
hey, that's really cool! Nice work guys up there.
Texas Minuteman, what parts are you coming from? Any chance of going further south for an Appleseed?
great pix appleseeders!
I really need to get back to an AS shoot, it's been nearly a year! (4-09 w/scout, tx pirate?).
Looks like you all had a blast just as I did last year.
The weather at you all's AS was certainly better than when I attended but it was great none the less.
I think I will try and get in on the 4-17/18-10 AS event if I don't have a work conflict.
Man...I really do miss the event.
Good luck to all.
Yeah! http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=11821.0
I will be there!
apparently we had some shooters that did not enjoy the shoot ... I guess as instructors we (meaning me) need to make sure that the attendees get the quality instruction they paid for. I just found out about Roger and Bonnie and their disappointment with our program. I am searching my memory banks and trying to remember if they spoke up during the event...... meanwhile I guess it is a big lesson learned for me
Don't beat yourself up on this. This guy is a whiner and his wife,(a great shot) did not shoot 210 using a bench. He is the type that is the greatest shot in the world and does NOTHING to save the Republic. I meet them at every gun show, all snipers. If only the military had that many people who could shoot. As to scoring rifleman at your first shoot, not important at all, is it?
My first shoot had 86 people, relays, and no instruction on a personal basis. I LOVED IT!!!!!!!! And could'nt wait to go the next day. Best AQT, 170.
You could say I was hooked. And BTW, I had been shooting since 8.

@ Sleepy Joe,
This shoot was my first Appleseed and for what it is worth, I thought you and SNAITF did a fine job. I don't know the specifics of the feedback you received, but I appreciate your willingness to receive feedback and learn from it. Regarding "getting what they pay for", I would assert that is a matter of perspective. Certainly on a value per $ spent basis, I would consider the instruction I received to be worth far more than the money spent on the shoot. That's my opinion. Given what I saw and some of the brief chats I had, I think other attendees would feel the same.
One person or organization cannot be all things to all people so it is important to remember what one's goals are. One thing I've learned from perusing the forum is that Appleseed has a specific mission. If you try to be all things to all people, then the mission gets lost and in the end, not accomplished. If there is a learning opportunity here, take advantage of it, but keep your chin up. You did well that weekend.
TNVolunteer
I agree with TNVolunteer - the meet was well run, and I got sufficient instruction to 'get what I paid for'. Have these people ever hired a plumber? The $35/day that Appleseed charged will maybe get you half an hour of a plumber's time. We all got more one on one attention than that, the group sessions were well run, and the stories were well told.

How far south, do you have another one to attend ?
As it is, we're coming to the April 17-18th 2010 one just now at College Station. That seems to be the closest one near to Lufkin, TX area that we live near. That's Angelina County, just south of Nacogdoches.
I'd love to have one happen in this area. I presented the idea, informally, to the NRA sponsored range I'm a member at.
Do you know if NRA sponsored ranges tend to accept Appleseed shoots ? (probably should ask that elsewhere, eh ?)
Anyhow, thanks and see you on the range,
TM
