Well the weather here was awesome this weekend. Perfectly clear, a very slight breeze (enough to keep the flies at bay some of the time). The drive to this range reveals an excellent view of the channel Islands. We had all met up Friday afternoon to set up the backers ahead of time. This made for a lot less work Saturday morning. Dano, Marpat Whittemore, Marpat Pippi, the Apprentice and I all instructed and Laylopro was SB.
25 shooters showed up on Saturday (7 walk ons). This was a petty good crowd for this range. In the years I have been going to this range, I have never, ever seen this many cars in the parking area. We had one Rifleman on Sunday (Matt) who says he will be back for that orange hat at the next Appleseed. And one orange hat, Goodland. Goodland had his Rifleman patch from his first Appleseed in Santa Barbara and came back to shoot up AQT's :~ and take an orange hat. O0
Several UCSB students were present both days. Despite the massive parties going on in Isla Vista for Halloween, they saw fit to stay away from that and come up the mountain to learn marksmanship and listen to some good history.
Eric broke out his 50 Beowolf AR >:D and showed some pretty sizable holes in those AQT's. Of the 4- guys shooting on the centerfire side of the line, there was a Saiga, SKS, and AK. We just called that the red sector. These guys showed lots of improvement.
Marpat Whittimore and Marpat Pippi's Parents and brother all showed up to shoot. They persevered and did outstanding. Let me tell you, the Marpats have got real good family.
JamesE's son and GF were there also. They have obviously had some good instruction from dad. Also knew a bunch of the history already!
There were many first time shooters, I would guess about 30%. A lot of LTR's came in handy. All the shooters showed an excellent effort. With the time change, everyone got an extra hour of sleep Sunday. Unfortunately that means it gets darker earlier. The shooters hung in there so well, we could have ground through at least 3 more AQT's. The improvement by the end of the second day was phenomenal.
To break up the grind, Marpat Pippi had brought the Oreo cookies and Crackers. The shooters pinned them to the backers and practiced breathing and NPOA shifts to take out the cookies. I am not one to waste a cookie like that, but these oreos were filled with Red Filling, and, well I think those were redcoats hiding in there.
Personally I would like to thank all the shooters for being such pleasant people to work with. There could be no better way to spend a weekend than with my Appleseed buddies and a group of shooters like this.
Lovely shoot here again @ Winchester Gun Club in Santa Barbara.......we have pix, but give me a few hours to get rested to post them.... $$-0
Great team building weekend, getting a Santa Barbara group going, and having a -full- universe of varied students to work with...... <:)
As said, we had one RM, and one new IIT, but we got the Heritage word out to a -bunch- of folks....that makes for a good weekend in my book... O0
Great group of citizens here, that was for absolutely sure!! <:) O0
More in a bit...as said before, we've learned our lesson about posting while still " a bit toasty from the road"...... ++) %)

You know, from now on, until, say April, you guys are really going to have to tone down the weather out there. We, out here in the real America, with 40 degrees and drizzle are all getting cranky already. And it gets worse, knowing we will have to hear complaints from CA like " it was really hot and windy today".
But then again.........Fred said something about an Appleseed vacation, with spouse, for those SB,s who do 12 shoots. O0 O0 O0 O0 Wow, I think I'm there. See you ALL in Sunny California :~ :~ :~ :~ :~ :~ :~ And keep those rosy weather reports coming in!!!!
Coly and OG
For much of the year the weather here is about 70 +-5. When it varies beyond that, it is really hot or really cold. :) But it does snow up at that range, maybe every other year or so. The snow only lasts a couple days though.
Colycat, we would love to have you all here for an Appleseed.
Hey Coly & family,
Have I got the perfect "winter vacation" for you!! O0 <:) O0
Dec 12-13th @ Corona!!
Return to the beginnings of your AS journey!! O0 O0 O0 O0
SavageShooter will be SB'ing this shoot, as I will be returning from my annual pilgrimage to Illinois(ucks) taking birds of various plumage.....
There's lots of room for some "extra hats", & who knows?? If you guys shoot, you could even score some of those awesome "California" (with a "C", no "K" here) rockers for your shooting jackets..... :o ;D O0
How crazy cool would those be to take home?? @@) @) <:)
And yeah, the weather then should be "moderately cool, light breezes, and sunny"........ ;D ;) ^-^
we'll leave the light on for ya.... ;)

I had a good time and definitely learned a few things. After almost three years of shooting it was surprising how much I didn't know. I'd definitely be interested in doing it again next time.
The only thing that I didn't like was the fact that the event coincided with Halloween weekend. I'm sure more people would have shown up on another weekend when they weren't passed out/hungover.
Hey, All!
Just want to let you know I had a GREAT time! and to say THANK YOU to all the instructors and participants for giving me such a good experience and memory! O0
Seein' as I've only fired off maybe 'bout 20 rounds previously in my entire life, this shoot was much needed and I can't think of a better way to learn 'bout rifling than thru Appleseed. I'm really impressed with how well all the instructors worked together. I don't think any paid professionals could have done any better and knowing that you're all volunteers is even more commendable and admirable.
I must confess that I was getting a bit frustrated with jams and not finishing the AQTs for a while !@#) but LayloPro and Pippi stepped in and made all go away and I'm grateful to them for that. Big THANKS! ;D
I've already bought most the ammo I need for next week's Piru RBC and will be signing up. I had a heck of a time finding .22 ammo locally (SLO Co.) - everybody's out! I just found out there's a gun show in Ventura at the show grounds next weekend - will be checking it out on the way out to Piru to see if I can pick up a bit more.
As is often the case on the Central Coast, the weather couldn't be better. I managed to take a couple south facing vista shots of the morning sun sparkling along the coastline and Channel Islands. The views along the road to the range were so gorgeous and stunning ~ absolutely breathtaking! I think I got the better part of the deal 'cause my drive took me not just along the ridge overlooking the ocean, but also thru the mountains with their great views, past Cachuma Lake and thru gorgeous green rolling hills and valleys ~ add to that the full moon rising on the way home, and having had such wonderful days meeting such good people at the shoot ~ I gotta tell ya, it just doesn't get much better. (There's a reason they call this part of CA "God's country".)
Also want to say that the historical accounts were awesome and definitely put everything into perspective. Whoever had the idea for this did this country a service. Pippi, you had me to the brink of bustin' out in tears. You are a beautiful spirit! Don't ever hide it. @)
I've already told my neighbor and people at the store about Appleseed and will keep spreadin' the word. ^-^
Looking forward to next week's RBC ~
~ nina
Hey Nina,
Glad to see you jumped in!!
And also glad Pippi & I were able to help you out in the frustration area.....trust me when I say, we've -all- been there.....and while there have been no porta-potties tipped over that I know of at any of the ranges, the temptation has been there greatly..... !@#) :))
You know, it's funny you mention the scenery....I just happen to have several pix I took as I was toddling thru the countryside, pretty much on the same route you took....lemme see if I can get them out here...... %)
I like the scenery there as well....ignore the pix titles....we have some folks back East that are already starting to get their "I hate California" thing on, just about the weather.....so these pix are for them, and they will feel better about things..... :))
LLP
All righty.....
Another great event at the Winchester Gun Club....if you haven't been able to shoot here yet, you -owe- it to yourself to make it out there!! Wonderful location!! Great range...I simply can't say enough good things about the place!!
We finally have our pix done that we took....not quite as many as usual, it was a tad "busy" this weekend.....but.... "enough"..... :D
The folks that came out this weekend were a real blessing....some truly surprising "rifle heroes", folks who knew well what they were about, and a bunch that are one more step along on that path of discovery....... <:) Overall, really good Americans!!
We had father/daughters, fathers/sons, fathers, moms, and kids, and couples with friends, everyone who came out seemed to have a really good time, and at this range, I can't say as I blame them....gorgeous Santa Barbara weather, a covered concrete line, friendly, happy folks to hang out with, and rifle marksmanship improvement.....what more could they ask for? ::)
Well, there's that little thing we do at lunch time.....the story of April 19, 1775, and a few small towns in Massachusetts....and the Americans who singly, and as groups, changed the course of not only their lives, but of their country, and the world.... :o O0
I think everybody liked it too.... O0
We got started on time with 25 shooters coming to the line, and after safety briefing and separate orientation for folks who needed it, found we had a very diverse group of shooters...some were very effective already (1 had previously shoot Rifleman before), and some had almost no previous rifle experience....Cool!! We can work with this!! <:) Fire hose on!! :~ :~ :~ :))
Forward into SHF's, and the 6 steps....moving as quickly as the group let us, we pushed forward.... 8)
We quickly had many equipment problems with some of the rifles folks had brought (I had 10 LTRs' out almost the entire weekend), and were able to get everyone up to speed on the $10 GI sling.....some worked better with loop, some preferred the Hasty, but they all got slung up.... O0 :~
Working thru the shooters, trigger control & follow thru seemed to be their biggest gremlin.....but we kept 'em going! Firing line classroom....teach, show, shoot, check targets.....rinse & repeat..... :~ :~ :~ :~ $$-0 :~ :~ :~ :~ !@#) :~ :~ :~ :~ #) :~ :~ :~ :~ :'( :~ :~ :~ :~ :o
Lunch time approaching, the shooters are starting to jell with it all.....groups are shrinking, accuracy is increasing.....lunch, we told them of the 3 strikes, and the costs to that previous generation for us, and how Jefferson said: "We are but one generation away from losing our Liberty..." Are we going to lose it on our watch? Tell our grandchildren we were too busy watching TV to get involved? That we failed to "make good use of it?" When ever I talk about this part, I can hear Patrick Henry in my head, thundering: "I know not what course other men may take, but as for me, give me Liberty, or give me death....."
That pretty much says it all......
We went thru the rest of the day, and folks just seemed to be "getting it"....more control, better groups, more understanding of it all....I did a few NPOA laser blaster seminars with a few folks off to the side, and as always, it helps immensely....Too quickly, the sun was setting behind the hill on our West, and we shot our 2nd Redcoat for the day....the numbers were a definite improvement.....over half the shooters added at least another 100 yds to their effective range!! In one short day of learning!! Gee, this stuff really works, doesn't it! @)
Returning Sunday we had 19 shooters, and it appeared most had taken my aspirin advice, and didn't look too terribly "beat up"....We were down an instructor from a stomach flu bug that got him during the night, but we still had enough to do it....shifting things around to make sure everything was covered, we got started with another redcoat......Scores were down just a bit from the night before, but hey....in 66 degree weather, ya gotta warm up first, you know?? ;D
One sheet of squares, then into the QDAQT march, soon to become a grind......"Shooters, prep 2 & 8".....we watched the shooters continue, and improve, and now we were in tune mode, watching for the "little things" that can throw off the shot.....
A break for lunch, and then the stories of the "folks who -did- make a difference", even if they were by themselves, helped by others, or just plain fighting mad......Our story tellers did an awesome job of getting these points across, and I applaud them heartily!! O0 <:) O0
Lunch over, back to the AQTs'.....
We started noticing the shooters hitting the "wall", and had prepared by bringing cookies.....Halloween Oreo cookies.....and pins....not to get the shooters blood sugar up for a brief moment, but as targets..... :)) 2 cookies each, one mag, 10 rounds.....happy shooters again....since that wasn't enough, and we were still trying to get the NPOA shifts happening, Nina provided a couple of rolls of Ritz crackers.....now it was: 3 crackers per shooter, volley command shift & fire, 20 rounds..... 8)
Lots of fun, and wouldn't you know it? The next AQT showed their improvement..... :o ::)
Continuing on, we had a RM score pop up in one of our "sets of targets to score".....keeping quiet about it, we watched the shooter (who had come in place of his sister who had gotten sick) continue to improve....good deal..... O0 ;)
Our previous Rifleman, Goodland, kept his scores climbing as well....I think his highest that I saw was a 234 or there abouts....good form = good shooting....who knew? %) :)) ;D
We had our final AQT, then Redcoat, and again, improvements were obvious....some true surprises....the quiet "house moms" who were handily out shooting the kids.....Duncan, our "Designated Sniper", who quickly set the pace for the weekend by qualifying @ 300 yds with a really pretty cluster of shots, then continued to "get it dun", until a loosening scope mount started messing with his concentration.....Eric, who brought out his .50 Beuwolf, which makes really humorously large holes in the AQT (you can score it from the firing line, no glass needed)....Tim & his daughter, on her first time ever shooting a rifle, and getting better as the day went on, and she gained the confidence with herself & the rifle.....
If I missed you, I apologize, you were all standouts in my world...that's what makes it so worthwhile for me to go to these.....
We finished by handing a very surprised Matt his RM patch, and rockers, and welcoming Goodland into the ranks of the IIT's....both of them good men, and I expect to see great things from them in their lives....
As seems to be the usual, I was the last one out, casting about in the moonlight for any gear left behind anywhere.....and I am always sad that the Appleseed is finished there for the weekend, but I know in my heart, we'll be back, and dealing with good Americans again.....
So with that final thought, lemme ask you.....
How was your weekend?
LayloPro
and yet more pix.....why not?
OK, still more pix...
Check 'em out, you might see yourself.... >:D 8)
As a last note.....This was my first time back at Winchester gun club in over a year, and then I was the "newbie".....calling the line, with Fred (God bless him!), as my left side RSO......great weekend then, and another great weekend this time, as well....
But all of my thanks have to go out to not only the good folks who got off their couch & came out to hear what we had to say & show, but also the Instructors that made this event what it was.....as said before, there's no way I could be doing these things on my own...this was great because of -YOUR- efforts, and I just wanted to Thank You again for that..... O0 <:) O0

I am going to make sure there is a weekend next year that does not coincide with Midterms, Finals, Springbreak, Summerbreak, Winter break or halloween next year. Belive me, dropping Jimmy off in Isla Vista Saturday night was a little hectic. Like a drunken mob swarming the streets and riot police on every corner. And there I am with 3 rifles in my truck. @)

This was a great Appleseed! We had a lot of beginners and many females! Along with a good mix of both rim fire and center fire rifles.
Everyone did great and was SAFE...no one left with any extra holes.
A couples shout outs:
It was great to have the Stewert family. Your son was quite the shot :~... I see a Rifleman in the near future. I look forward Mom and Dad Shooting at the next Appleseed!
It was great to have my family there, I am very proud of all of them, especially Kathleen who scored a 207 :~ :~ :~ on the AQT while sitting for not only the 2nd but the 3rd and 4th stage too ... I see a Rifleman patch at the next Appleseed (and this was her first real time really shooting a rifle!)
I was also very proud of Sienna, one tough eight grade girl who learned to run the bolt on her scoped pink sparkled .22 and battled hot brass! When offered a pink semi-auto she said she liked the bolt better.
Thanks to Nina who hung in there... the "time monkey" as we call him has frustrated %) us all, and equipment malfunctions are very common by the end of the second day ... But a Rifleman persists &) and that you did! It was a pleasure working with you.
Thank you to everyone for coming and I hope to see you again! Hopefully sooner than later. Stay tuned...
Looks Like you guys had a great shoot. Hey don't complain about being scared with rifles in the truck. You didn't have to drive through 2 Border Patrol checkpoints and get asked what's in the back (9 rifles) Good Job guys O0
Excellent job, everyone! Now, I've gotta find me some Oreos- that sounds fun. :) Looking forward to meeting new instructors (and old ones too, LLP **)) on the trail soon!
(And Jacques, I think that sounds like the PERFECT time to have rifles in the truck. @)) :)
Great folks, great scenery, great weather, etc, etc, etc. Sorta make you sick, don't it?
As to the Oreo targets..... Guys, I'm starting to become a little disturbed about this.
Folks, this started out in one location, and I didn't say anything because I thought it might die out on it's own and not need intervention. But it has spread to other locations and seems to be getting more popular so I must say something:
It is a twisted and sick person who will waste perfectly good chocolate like that! Why can't you shoot a Ritz cracker or a Ginger Snap or something? Every time you kill an oreo like that, a chocoholic like me dies a little inside. Have some pity, some human kindness about you.
The next time you see someone approaching the target line with a box of anything chocolate, please confiscate it and send it to me for safe keeping. I don't mind doing this, I sort of feel it is my duty.
Thanks for your consideration, JB
I hear your plea.... There were definitely some oreos that never made it to the boards...but you have to understand they had REDCOATS :~ inside them! We did use Ritz Crackers as well - But they dont break and fall like the Oreos do !@#)(One Shooter had 3 shots through 1 cracker and it was still on the board--so much for a reactive target $$-0). Maybe the Crackers just need to be more stale.
Okey birdman-
we will have the raspberry newton shoot off in Piru.......
I feel your pain, all those cookies moving down range :'( And to understand the chocoholic, well, for others, it would be like lining up bottles of Jack Daniels and Jim Beam..................but hey, look at the bright side, they will never get our ice cream, just no way to make it stick to the backers.
For this event, and having been sick with food poisoning or something the whole night before, my stomach was really upset at the time, barely hanging, and the cookies did not seem appealing anyway. next time, because poor Dano had the same thing, we are not going to eat at that restaurant!
Heh!! The "devious monkey devil" is striking..... >:D >:D >:D
Perhaps next week we should bring out some "chocolate potato salad".......... :P :-[ $$-0
Temptation, & denial, on the same plate....... >:D **) **)
Perhaps with a side plate of Bar-B-Q bear ribs...... >:D :))
Seriously, these were not regular OREO's....they were "Commie Cookies", with a totally red filling that was not normal.....we -had- to use them as targets, simply to relieve the world from their global domination demands......
Hey, it was fun!! Folks that were hitting the wall started smiling again, and having a frustratingly great time....... O0
As Fred said when standing on this very line back in August, '08...."You have happy shooters out here...."
You betcha!! <:)
LLP
I just happened to find this pic. from last April. Please notice the height of the backers. <:) Look the same?
Hmmm, the couple looks kinda familiar..... <:)
Wow! What a great weekend. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers. I learned so much in 2 days, I cannot wait to go to my next shoot (Piru 11/14 & 11/15). Thought about the boot camp, maybe next year.
Nina do you want to car pool?
Being a native to Santa Barbara I have to agree that the views and weather were beautiful, unfortunately I seem to rarely take the time to enjoy them. So thank you for getting me up to my own range and teaching me valuable rifleman skills.
Hope to see some of you at Piru.
Debbie
P.S. Any advise on where to buy a ruger 10/22?
Good article on gold history and where we are today.

Hey Debbie, you made it. You can get a Ruger 10/22 at Goleta Valley Gun and Supply over on Calle Real (near Fairview next to Dennys) or at Far West (right near the corner of State and Mission). Those are the only two places in town here. Far West also has the Uncle Mikes Sling attachment kits (make sure it is the 1 1/4 inch).
You can get the peep sights at :
http://www.tech-sights.com/
Shoot, I can set you up with the sling and uncle mikes attachments, I live right here in town. And if you need someone to shop for a 10/22 with, I will go with you. I will be gone all next week, but other than that PM me if you want. Remember, there is a 10-day waiting period for any firearm, so there is no way you will have a nice shinney new 10/22 before the 14th. :(
If you need a loaner in PIRU, PM me. I will bring one for you to PIRU. O0
You think you learned a lot in two days, think about what you could learn in 7-days at Boot Camp. %) It was great to have you at the Appleseed and we definately look forward to you at the next. I think Nina has signed up for boot camp, so she will already be at the shoot in Piru on 11-14. Most likely, she will be instructing!! O0
There are also more shoots coming to Santa Barbara, definitly in April, and schedule pending for Feb, Aug, Nov.
Jacques
Hey Debbie!
Yeah, you made it here!! Glad you could be here..... <:)
and to even have a local guide for shopping....how cool is that? As a volunteer no less!! @) O0
Jacques is in charge of getting more shoots lined up for the SB/Ventura Cty area, so if you could lend him a hand, I know he'd appreciate it....Volunteers are the true lifeblood of this organization.....Look at us!?! We were all folks that came to one of these events awhile ago, and saw the value in actually -doing something- that makes a real difference......
Come on in, the waters fine!! O0 ;)
You -will- have fun in Piru......great bunch of folks there......but pads & eye wear are mandatory......

Jacques,
Thanks for the kind offer, I forgot about the wait period (darn government) How do you PM someone? I will take you up on a borrowed 10/22. Do you have an extra pad? I will be buying one soon but I'm not sure if it will arrive in time. I really thought long and hard about the boot camp (darn work).
LaLoPro,
I felt the water and I like it just fine! I agree that spreading the seed is very important and will do what I can to assist Jacques.
Fred,
Thanks for the welcome.
I love that quote and to find out it was probably never spoken by Jefferson kind of ruined my day :-[ Thanks for the link, looks like I will be spending some time there.

Nina
If you are still looking for .22 in SLO, try Range masters on Granada. They will only sell you 200 rds at a time, but if you go in with a couple of friends...
See you in Piru.
Andy
I will bring my shooting mat. I will also bring my 10/22. I was just in Goleta Valley Gun shop and he has .22 ammo. Just ask the guy what you get for a 10/22. You should get 500 rds. The federal bulk pack is the worse stuff.
Here, I will PM you, then you just have to reply. Just click on MY MESSAGES (above) to get it.

For those of you needing ammo, Ventura Gun Show is this weekend(7th and 8th). For those of you who need ammo and can't make it, PM me and I will buy extra and bring it to Piru next weekend.
Debbie
.
what a shameful ploy to advertize!
Whatever it takes, Ken, whatever it takes...... <:)
Hey, Debbie! Thanks for thinking of me, :) but as Jacques already stated, I've signed up for the boot camp. I've already got most the .22 ammo I need, but will be stopping by the gun show on the way down tomorrow. Don't know if you remember Woody from the Ventura and Santa Barbara Ron Paul meetups, (he was at the Santa Monica Ron Paul Tea Party that we carpooled to back in '07 - can you believe it'll be 2 years next month? (BTW: it was great seein' ya again - at AS no less!)) - anyway, he's done 2 AS at Piru and will be standing in line at the gun show bright and early 8 am (1 hour before opening #)) 'cause he said the last show had a long waiting line to get in. If I can make it down before he walks in, he said he'd give me "cuts". lol But that would mean leaving here 'round 6:30 a.m. and I don't know if I'm ready for that 'cause I think I'll be up late packin' for BC.
I don't have a rifle to bring, but I already talked to Bob and he said he'd bring rifles for me. I ran into the same dilemma as you, Deb - 10 day waiting period. Even if I had purchased a rifle Monday morning right after SB AS, I still wouldn't have it in time for this week's BC. (Another frustrating situation !@#) I know as soon as I get through getting all my gear, a lot of it will subside. @) ) I'm hoping to pick some brains 'round the camp fire this week in re to rifles, gear, etc. so as to make more informed purchases.
OK, I gotta get goin' to the store to pick up last minute details for this week, so this is probably my last post until after BC.
Lookin' forward to seein' you next weekend - and everyone else, too! 8)

A third place in SB to get a rifle is Custom Cartridge. They will help you buy by appt only. They are a specialty shop. They sell for 10% above their cost if you know what you want or 10% less than MSRP if they have to help you find the rifle for you. You can call to make an appointment. Their website is http://customcartridge.com/. They are located in old town Goleta.
Looking at this shoot from afar, I would have to say, YOU ALL DID A GREAT JOB :~
Dead on correct Coly...it was a good great job by the instructor's O0.....the merry bunch here really picked up their ball & ran with it..... @) <:)
'Bout all I had to do was kind of walk around a bit, talk with spectators coming up to see what was going on, and offer "gentle points" to the crew....they have got it going on up here, & I was just happy to be there to hold their coats, and bring the suntan lotion.... :)
I'm looking for great things out of this area....there's some -motivated- folks right there..... O0 <:) O0
