Let me preface this by saying I'm no PR guy or anything. If you've got ideas for this, please share!

Facebook and other similar social networking sites are a great way to act on the seventh step. So here's a test Facebook group for New York Appleseed. I'd like to get everyone's opinion on it and what information should be there. I'll add the rest of the events to it and try pushing it out to my group of friends. If you're on Facebook, join the group, invite your friends, spread the word!

Please take a look at this and let me know what you think.

On a semi-related note, are sign-up lists ever passed around at shoots for mail/email updates on the Appleseed Project? This is a good way to keep in touch with folks after they've been to a shoot. It would be voluntary to sign up, so no spam or other issues, and it would keep folks up to date on new shoots in the state and the project as a whole.

Nice work. I see no reason why NY would not benefit from this. The hard part is keeping up on it.

There is a national FB page. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=20965705969&ref=ts

The Eventbrite registration page builds email lists. Those are used for alerting people of upcoming events, and nothing else(as it should be).

I have all the events for this year loaded. There has to be an easier way to create these events... time to look for that!
Which 2010 events are official/confirmed at this point?

outoforder2day

Ok, so apparently there are differences between groups (like what was created in the link above) and pages (relatively new, link here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/New-York-State-Appleseed-Project/137140224839?v=wall) Pages are better and provide more functionality from a viral marketing point of view.

In groups, you become a member of the group and have to manually publish events for your friends to see.
In pages, you become a fan and anything listed on the page is automatically pushed to your feeds. You get better multi-level penetration. Further, you can access the page and events without a facebook account.

So the question is: Do we want to keep the group? Do we Stick with the fan page? I think keeping both would create confusion overall and that the fan page is the better route to go.
Thoughts?

Done. You can find the fan page here:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/New-York-State-Appleseed-Project/137140224839?ref=mf
You should be able to access this page with or without a Facebook account. I'll start adding the 2010 events over the next few days.

If you're on Facebook, become a fan! If you have a website and you want to help with that 7th step let me know. We can ad widgets to you site.

If anyone has a high resolution image of the RWVA Logo or Appleseed logo, I could really use it (and the permission to use it).

Great! Spread the word!

I think I've settled on this format for all future events. Please let me know if you think something should be changed or added:

The Appleseed Program is designed to take you from simply being a rifle owner to being a true Rifleman. All throughout American history, the Rifleman has been defined as a marksman capable of hitting targets from 500 yards away! This 500-yard range is traditionally known as "the rifleman's quarter-mile." A rifleman can hit just about any target he can see.

Learn the "Six steps to firing the shot", correct firing positions, and the proper use of the sling. Hear some little-known Revolutionary War history and reaffirm your heritage. Become a more influential citizen and make America a better place. Have Fun!

Does anyone know how to get in touch with "outoforder2day" or know who I should ask? I would like to revitalize and update the New York State Facebook page for promotional use. It looks like that person created the NYS Facebook page in Sept 2009 and it hasn't been updated since.

Marksmanship can be taught and learned,
but the motivation has to be inspired for the
people to become involved.
How many have you inspired that became involved?

LittleMo,

PM them and it should send an e-mail to their external account telling them they have a message.  Hopefully their e-mail account is still active.  I'll poke around the Facebook page to see if we can get any connections that way.

The page has had an administrator post as recent as March of 2011.

I was given admin rights to the Facebook page from that person. After some minor work and updating, I will be re-introducing the Facebook page to the AS forum and to the public.

Thank you!

Well done, Gary.  I can't wait to see what you do with it.  Do you have some helpers working with you?  The Northwest Region Project Appleseed page has 4 active contributors who manage the page.
