Title: Instructor KD day returns
Post by: yellowhousejake on August 02, 2011, 10:08:13 PM
If you missed out on Atterbury in May, here is another chance to get real KD on a real range. This time for two days. Camping will be allowed on the range!

http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=22366.msg174404#msg174404

READ the EIP, there are certain rules and restrictions that must be obeyed, this is an active military installation.

I understand from everyone who attended last time it was well worth it.

Arrrhg!!!!  I've got to work!!!!  :wb:  :wb:  :wb:

Anybody who hasn't gotten to do this yet should absolutely try to get there!  It was a blast the last time and I learned a lot about my rifle and my own skills.  And you get to do it for 2 days!!

If I was SPQR I would speak eloquently for another 10 paragraphs on why you should be going.  Since I'm not, I'm just going to say "Get there!"

Question: So do I have to decide on ONE rifle to bring, or is it okay for me to submit a list of serial numbers?  And then do I have to bring them all, or can I switch cases and leave the AR at home in the M1 case so as to smuggle the M1 out of the house undetected?   ::)

Send them all, bring all or your choice.

Do I understand this correctly?
- Attendees must not carry side arms or have sidearms in their possession.

I cannot even bring my handgun and leave it in my vehicle locked up the entire time?

Personally I don't like using the MG-42 to cook bacon. I like my bacon cooked slow. A M1919-A4 or A6 works well. Heck for a single person, an M1A1 Thompson will do.

Active military installations generally allow you to bring pistols on post, but you have to lock them up at the armory until you leave.  This may be an option at Atterbury, but it may not since there is active civilian shooting groups that utilize the facility.

I will be there, and I may camp, but my house is about an hour or hour and a quarter away.  I think Dragonfly is coming down that weekend and staying with me, but if someone else wants floor space, let me know.

May I suggest that we are ready to go when the sun rises, and shoot until it goes down?  That will allow us to maximize the day..

I am bringing 192 rounds of M2 ball and 200 rounds of M885. We only need 40 to qualify KD right?

If Techres can qualify with a cricket at 25m, you can do KD with a bolt gun at 100, 200,300,400m.
Besides most bolts hold 5 rounds in a resevoir. You just have to hand load the other 5......

I don't think you would have any trouble qualing with a bolt gun.  No NPOA shift, you have decent glass and shoot good groups with it.

I've seen Patrick shoot a boltgun, I don't think KD would be a problem. If it is I will have .5`s Colt with me and 300 rounds of M885. I seem to have a Garand to use now.

Thanks for everyone's confidence in my shooting ability.

My Steven's actually holds 6 in the box, and I've been practicing reloading.

I didn't have anyone to help me, so I had to start the stopwatch, drop it then eject the last shell, reload all 6, drop the bolt, eye up to the scope and then stop the stopwatch.  I got it down to about 15 seconds.  That's 40 seconds + to get off my shots, I should be able to do that, and clean my gun.....right??

When shooting this KD, on the second and third stages do I just get to load 2 in the gun?  Or do I get to start with a full 6 in the gun?

Thanks,
Patrick

I do not know that I ahve ever seen it written down, but... Since there is no NPOA shift I see no rhyme or reason for being picky about when you reload and how many rounds.

Anyone been to a RBC know the answer?

Once the number of people is known, we can determine whether there are NPOA shifts.  If we like, we can even run stage #4 on ten targets(2 rounds each).........

There is no requirement to load 2 and 8. Just to break your position to reload. Load as many as you can and then single feed the last 4, it will be faster that way. (Presuming you have a follower override.

The requirement, as I understand it, is to break position to reload other than on a shift unless not possible for a valid reason.   I think running a bolt gun with an internal capacity of (less than 8 ) more than meets this requirement.

Post by: jmdavis on August 15, 2011, 12:47:22 PM
2 and 8, 5 and 5, 6 and 4, 6 and single load 4 it all adds up to 10 and requires a break in NPOA/position.

If you practice it The Kid's advice works well. We do it for field shoots, but you need to make sure that your bolt will not lock back when you are single feeding. US military bolt rifles (1903, 1903a3, 19170 have a magazine cut off to prevent the bolt from locking back. In addition rifle like the Steyr's have a magazine position to facilitate it.

Duh...I was reloading all 6 back into the box.  I only have to load 4.  Or single load them as you all suggested, which, more than likely would be quicker.

Take the 25m CoF and shoot it all at one target (pits will pull and score in between each stage).  Stage 1: 100 yds, Stage 2: 200 yds, etc.   Everything else is the same.  O0

A rider approached, dusty and tired from the five day ride, thirsty as well I thought. I offered him the last of my darjeeling seeping in the pot, and waited for him to sooth his parched throat. About the 1903, 03-A3 and 1917, you can reload with stripper clips.

Do NOT use the same stripper clips that the M14 uses, they are the wrong size.

If you search eBay or Gun Broker, you can usually find Swedish Strippers  ++) (for the Swedish Mausers, get your minds out of the gutter. They work well, and last.

Depends on the time of year and the location, and whether or not Stalin`s slaves laid gravel roads.

Mike Hammer never used an Enfield rifle either, but he always smelled cordite after a gun was fired. Embrace the story... embrace it...

Mmmmm....  deep-fried bacon-wrapped Twinkies...aaaahhhhhhh....  Oh! *ahem*  Sorry.

The one time I've done this before we stayed pretty busy.  As I recall (no guarantee that I do that accurately) we had lunch when we were in the pit minding the targets (I was in the 1st relay to shoot).  A sub sandwich with nothing that will make it soggy is my typical choice ('cause I get it the night before since I'm on the move before Subway opens).

I will only be there on Saturday and I won't be camping.  Following the thread, so far it is just me, AuntiBellum and YHJ.  I'm sure someone will reply with a tally of who is signed up.

Last time was a blast.  Can't wait to do it again.

Hi All,

The number of people attending is currently 19-20 from three different states.  Once I have everyone's info complete, I can confirm that number.  Brian, I need you to get signed up on EB if you haven't since the last call post.  I would encourage everyone to camp and we have "occupation" of the range from 1800L on Friday until 1800L on Sunday.  I will get there on Friday as well as some others that I know will be there Friday and camping on range for the weekend.

An email with complete details will go out to everyone that provided the needed information after the roster is finalized tomorrow.

"deep fried bacon wrapped twinkies...."   Bacon..... it goes with everything!

Looking forward to a great weekend!

Also, I will be offering cleaning services - if you want your rifle cleaned after a full day of shooting just let me know and I will take care of it up until the point that it's too dark.  I will also be bringing a range of tools and rifle items so if you need repairs done, or things added, let me know.

Not food, but a few things that you will want to have if you have them.

1. Pen and notebook. There will be things that you want to write down.

2. If you have them bring binoculars or a spotting scope. Do not go out and buy either specifically for the KD but bring them if you have them. These will help you to spot your shots when they are marked by the pits.

3. A clipboard. Your AS clipboard will be fine. I will be printing out data sheets for everyone. These are 2up on 8.5x11 and have rifle, ammo and shot information specifically for D targets. I will also print some SR target data sheets for anyone interested in shooting the 200 yard High Power SR target.

You and Bill have all the current supply of DataBooks. I'll have one for my M1 and one for .5's AR.

You know, we're not THAT far away.   ;)

As far as things to bring, I'll have a spotting scope and binoculars.  I don't have a super fancy stand for the spotting scope like the high power shooters, but it should do the job anyway.  Do we want any kind of cover to put to the side for breaks?  I can bring shade, I just need to know before I start loading up as it goes on the bottom of the stack.   ;D

How's our menu looking?  I have one chance at about 1pm EST tomorrow to stop at a real grocery store, so if there's anything special I need to pick up for baking or cooking, I'll need to know by then.  I can even stop at a GFS at that point if that's the better option.

Anything else I need to bring, just give me a call.  Most of you have my number.   I'll be up for awhile.  This hotel room smells funny.

Superheat,

Sorry I am going to miss you on this one! We have an overfull shoot just down the road to take care of the same weekend.

HH

Ditto.  You know, some of us are busy getting folks off the couch and making Riflemen.  Event to Shoot Boss and such.....

I'm really bummed I'm missing this.  Would've loved the opportunity to shoot a FD AQT with the Garand.

West - hope to see you another time.  Glad to see you back stateside.  Thank you for your service.

ITB,

Too bad I am going to miss you, and Miki also.  Nice picture by the way, if you won't do it with a pink rifle, then don't bother!

I am going to bring food for myself, I have a strict diet, but I do have access to the chow halls if people want food I am more than willing to pick stuff up.  There are two or three on post, and a Base Exchange and probably a commissary.  If we need anything, don't hesitate to ask, and I will be making runs for ice.

Do we have a couple of big coolers coming so we can fill them with water?  It's going to be warm and sunny this weekend, and even though it is cooling off, hydration is neccessary (BILL!).

Make sure everyone brings weather appropriate gear as we do not have cover (apparently?) and it looks to be chilly at night (scoot closer to the campfire).

Bill, how much are those data books?  I want to buy a few....

West :))

I have a 10 x 10 portable canopy.  Just say the word and I will bring it.  I "assumed" that we would be moving the firing line all day and a canopy would be useless.

I will be bringing a construction water cooler. If AB brings hers we can have one in the pits and one at the 500 yd line for filling water bottles.

I'll bring my water cooler then, too.  I also have 5 lbs of pasta salad, two large bags of potato chips, and whatever baked goods materialize from my kitchen.
The firing line will be moving, but we're not using the width of the entire range. I'll bring my pop up and we can use it or not. See you tomorrow/ Saturday!

We'll bring our 10x10 EZ-up and both coolers for water.  I'll be glad to bring apples and granola bars for everyone to munch on during the day.  Can't really do the perishables so AB and OA, we'll help with the $$ for the food you bring and anyone else for that matter.

Already have our AS log books and covers from Voodoo Tactical-nice!  You know, Voodoo tactical will give AS instructors a huge discount, but the order have to go through CM at the owner's request, b/c he only wants to deal with one person.  But the discount is good! We met him at the NRA show in PA.

Really looking forward to this weekend!!!

Thanks everyone!!!

Well i hope you all have fun.

We happy few, however, will be running a shoot at Bedford with 50 to 100 shooters.  While you all sun yourselves at the shooting resort of Camp Atterbury we will be Saving the Country with our deft instructing skill and selling M1s with my eloquence.

I can't wait for your AAR. What will it be this time?

"As I passed the time on the Siberian Tundra waiting for my water to boil, the silence was broken by the sound of hoof beats. A rider approached, dusty and tired from the five day ride, thirsty as well I thought. I offered him the last of my darjeeling seeping in the pot, and waited for him to sooth his parched throat. 'We need a shoot boss' were his only words. I had already saddled my pony..."

Joanne  and I are bringing the fish and fish fryer, would be nice to have someone bring some side dishes to go along with the fish (i.e. potato salad, cole slaw, cookies, brownies or whatever)  We will have the tarter sauce and snake oil (malt vinegar) for the fish.

Okay!  I'll bring the fixin's for coleslaw and bunches of brownies!!

Will someone volunteer the plates and plasticware?

Thanks for the offer of ice, West.  I'll need some for the coleslaw and for the water.  Probably easier just to get it at the base than to try to find it Sat. on the way in.

See you soon!
