WARM UP WITH THE WASHINGTONS AT WASHINGTON'S HEADQUARTERS

(Newburgh, NY ... November 16, 2010)  Ever wonder how people kept warm before electricity, central heating and electric blankets? Forget reality television and discover for yourself when you come to Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site, Sunday, December 12th, 12 PM until 5 PM. The historic house, used by General and Mrs. Washington during the final winter of the war, in 1782, will be uniquely decorated to welcome the coming yuletide in 18th Century fashion. Costumed historic interpreters will answer questions as you walk through each room and the Salmagundi Consort will perform appropriate holiday music, adding to the mood of the day. Finish your tour, and ward off the winter chill as they did in the 18th Century, with hot cider and cookies served by an outdoor fire. The admission for this Special Event is $4.00 per person, children 6 and under are free.

Given the choice, the Washingtons probably would have enjoyed celebrating the twelve days of Christmas in true Virginia style. This would have included a bounteous table laden with delicacies and treats, in a far warmer climate than the Hudson River Valley afforded them. However, limited in just what could be done due to war shortages, nature provided the decorations that were incorporated into the rooms. Each room will have some simple signs of the season, adding little touches of holiday cheer, when little was to be had. It's a look back to a time when simple pleasures, even during a holiday season, preceded glitz, glamour and glossiness.

Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site is a registered national historic landmark. It is located at the corner of Liberty and Washington Streets within the city of Newburgh's East End Historic District. The site is one of 35 historic sites within the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and is one of 24 facilities administered by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission in New York and New Jersey.  For further information contact: (845) 562-1195.  For more information about New York State Parks, please visit our website: www.nysparks.com.

I've copied the post to the Northeast Regional board at http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=18650.0.  Some of you may not have access to this board.

This event looks like a good bit of fun and education.  I can't tell you how many times I've driven past Washington's headquarters in Newburgh and never knew it was there...
