The inaugural Appleseed at Miamisburg Sportsmen's Club sold out over a month ago, a short time after the date was announced.  That encouraging first sign snowballed into a whirlwind of positivity to show us that SW Ohio has been hungry for Appleseed.

Although we were confined to a smaller range than other locations, it in no way dampened this event.   In fact, the camaraderie and one-on-one instruction made for a perfect weekend.

We were sold out at 18 pre-regs but were very happy to squeeze in one walk-on... a gentleman that arrived early Saturday raring to go.  O0  Very glad to have him on board.  Saturday saw students absorbing all of the "building blocks" of marksmanship and putting a hurt on those pesky 1" squares.  We covered in detail use of the sling, prone position, Six Steps, NPOA, Talking Targets, IMC, and Rifleman's Cadence.  I spoke about the preliminary events and planning that led up to April 19, 1775 and the First Strike during lunch.  After lunch, we posted two Red Coats.  Instructors carded sights for everyone for an NPOA drill on one Red Coat square.  We did Ball & Dummy on the other.  Then we moved into instruction of the seated and standing position.  The Second and Third Strikes were shared (as quite a few folks couldn't come back for Sunday), and then we did 2 AQTs before officially calling it a day. A few folks packed up... and a few stayed on for some after-hour voluntary AQTs.  Groups all day were excellent.  Those and some excellent initial AQT scores had me worried last night that Ramseur didn't send enough Rifleman patches.  This was very gratifying, since all but three of our shooters were attending their first Appleseed.

This morning arrived bright and early, along with some aching muscles and a thirst for coffee.  We lost quite a few folks due to family commitments and cramming for college finals. :)  We had 8 shooters.

A well done quick review of prone, 6 steps, and NPOA by slim got us underway with our inital RedCoat and right into the AQT grind.  This group of shooters proved that they were up to the challenge and groups were good enough to stick to AQTs for most of the day.  I'll admit I had planned for at least a session of ball and dummy on Sunday.  Our shooters were so on the ball and had groups that were so consistent, that I thought it would be more beneficial to just continue with the grind and allow our instructors to tie up those loose ends.  We rotated in QDAQTs and Classification Green AQTs to keep things fresh.  Individual instruction helped polish up those little things that make a big difference.  We mixed in an "eyes closed" NPOA Star Target, a "Mad Minute" Teamwork drill, Dangerous Old Men, and other history talks throughout the day.

Of our 8 shooters today, four of them made Rifleman.  Welcome Matt, Aaron, Dave, and Gordon (Paladin).  Jorge, scored a strong 207 (a 209 with an optimistic .30 cal rule).  We all agreed it would help him sleep tonight if we called it a 207. :)  Several other 200's and 190's were seen on the targets of 4 of our 5 shooters that didn't make Rifleman.  I'd call that a resounding success.

As I said, Paladin, through many months of persistence to his shooting skills and dedication to the Appleseed mission by participating in the 7th Step,  earned his Rifleman patch..... He also accepted the responsibility of an Orange Hat!  He scored a 210 initially.  While slim and I were planning how best to distract him in order to empty the contents of my 7 gallon ice water jug, he went and foiled our plans by scoring a 214.

Well, we weren't about to let that 214 spoil a well thought out  plan.  >:D  (Pictures to follow once I download them.)

The weekend officially ended around 5:30 with a final Redcoat and wrap-up discussion.  We then continued with voluntary AQTs until the Boy Scouts kicked us off the range at 7.  ;D

I would like to thank our very capable Instructor Corps, all of the hard-working students that showed up, and the club leadership that hosted us.  They observed most of Saturday and had very complimentary things to say about the Program.  Our first event was a resounding success and I look forward to a long partnership with the Miamisburg Sportsmen's Club.  We're on the schedule for August 29-30 and I am proposing two more dates.

See everyone next time.

Meanstreaker, it was a pleasure getting to instruct under your command  :~ and although I was only there on Saturday I knew it was just a matter of time till we had some rifleman. Congrats to everyone who came out to shoot, it was good to get to work with everyone. A special congragulations to our 4 new rifleman it is quite an accomplishment. Paladin I knew you could do it, it just takes persistance and practice. Jorge was so close, he will get it yet I am sure.  O0

Please thank the club again for the use of their faciclites it truly is a nice range. Looking foward to getting to do it all over again in the future.

My wife, Starbuck, was truly an enormous help.  She did odd jobs throughout the weekend, took lunch orders from everyone during check-in, went to pick it up and bring it back, brought pop, water, chips, and brownies from home for the students, picked up brass while people were still shooting....., etc, etc.  She cooked breakfast Sat morning for folks crashing at our house.  Baked French Toast, eggs, fresh cut fruit.... much better than the Continental breakfasts I'm used to out on the Appleseed trail.  Me likey this hosting an event near home.  :)

She helped this event run very smoothly and we're all indebted to her for it.  It was great to have the students there for lunch so we could get to know each other and honor our forefathers.  So a big thanks to her!

I had a great time.  Thanks to all the IITs and shootboss Meanstreaker for the work they did.  BTW.. those brownies were awesome!

;D

I'm going to be working on finding my NPOA and dryfiring between now and the next shoot.  Oh yes, that rifleman patch will be mine.

Paladin

Thanx all,
This was an awesome shoot. The club is great. Meanstreaker you run the show very well, and tell your wife thanks from me as well. She was a life saver dealing with the food and drinks as well as picking up our mess. I'll have to buy her some "good beer (not PBR)" next time just to say thanks. Slim also did a great job helping out on the line giving me some good pointers to close my groups. Everyone there showed alot of potential for becoming rifleman. The team shoot was some proof of that, how much star was left on those targets? I must admit I am amazed at how much we actually got done there though. Think about it... We covered the Three Strikes in detail, Dangerous old Men, Flags, The why of Appleseed and the seventh step, and more. Still on Day one alone I fired over 250 rds downrange at poor unsuspecting targets, and on the second day close to 650 rds. All this and four rifleman plus 3 more so close, that they will most likley make it on their next shoot (once their rifles are clean and the sunburn wears off  ;D ). All I can say is what an awesome event.
PS. to those who are close. Dryfire!!!!! Dryfire!!!!! Dryfire!!!!! (right Dryfire  >:D ) It will make the difference.... and it's Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Poor Pebbles, she really wanted to see that one  ;D I have to admit I got suprised and deserved every bit of it for that first score. I like the company I'm keeping though, one of my fellow drenchee's was Sara from the Athens shoot the week before. I'm honered to be dunked with the likes of her. For any who do not know what I'm talking about check out the athens After Action Report from 1 week prior to this event.

If you look close, you can see some water running off you. :)  The wife was a split second too slow with the camera.

What a great time!

A fun event all weekend long and very productive as well. Our shooters were awesome and those groups just kept shrinking and shrinking until finally - RIFLEMEN! Improvement was made by all on the line. Everyone was enthusiastic and did everything they could to help each other out and persist through the sunshine and heat. What a lovely weekend we had with the rain so graciously waiting until after the event.

The pics pretty much sum it up. All I can say is I was really pleased with our first SWO (SouthWestOhio) event. I'm looking forward to the next one as I know every single person who didn't get a Patch on Sunday can get one next time if they DRY FIRE!!!

This was about as smooth an event as you can get. I highly recommend signing up for the next one and doing so as soon as possible.

A big thanks to the Miamisburg Sportsmen's Club for hosting us and special thanks to Starbuck for the extra efforts of making sure we were well taken care of. (And to Lucy too for helping Starbuck pick up every single piece of .22 brass at the end of Sunday. You ladies are awesome!)

Hey, I offered to re-do the shot, but Paladin didn't seem too keen on having water dumped on him again.  And, Mike - go for the head next time! Really get him drenched.

No problem for all the little things over the weekend.  Brownies should be a must at all Appleseed shoots - we'll have to suggest that to Fred.  ;)  Might be why we had so many Riflemen . . . nah, it was probably the awesome and handsome shoot boss.
