Long Rifle

Had another amazing event at the NRA Whittington Center last weekend. The major points of instruction revolved around the 4 duties of a Rifleman: target detection, range estimation, wind correction and delivering the shot.

There were many drills specifically designed to give the students the tools to solve these problems. Saturday was spent in the 'classroom' becoming very intimate with the workings of the students equipment as well as their physical skill. The day began, and ended, with a steel redcoat at placed at 300 yards. The question on the table was, is the target within your battle sight zero and can you hit it with 2 shots with no warm up; much like the expectation of the Minutemen in their day.

Sunday, despite the unrelenting sun everyone buckled down and shot the heck out of the steel that we hid from 300 to 900 yards. Good work everyone on staying focused on the job at hand!

'Jesse Adair' showed up Friday night and snuck onto the range. The local Patriots tried to chase him away Saturday morning. He got hit a few times and but was still there in the evening so we shot at him again.

The view beyond the 300 yard berm is typical of the terrain at the Whittington Center. There are 5 targets in that picture from 575 to 900 yards.

Can you find the target in this picture? When we arrived Sunday morning, it had disappeared. As the light changed during the day it came out of 'hiding'; barely. It was still challenging to find. From the firing line this one ranged at 650 yards.

The Riflemans Quarter mile target had disappeared Sunday morning but came out of hiding after lunch. The shooters worked this one over pretty good.

His little brother was really well hidden right next door.

Sometime Saturday night 'Jesse' had snuck away only to be replaced by his lieutenant. The lieutenant was a slightly built man so he was a little harder to hit. Things were going well until Tennessee Beast 'wounded' him.

Since the lieutenant was out of action and we were out of close targets we had to change up and go to another target. We had a 90% + hit rate at almost twice the distance of Jesse. Our country is in good hands.

On Saturday morning,Maximum Ordinate presented Long Rifle his 100 Event pin!  :F :F Imagine the hours that went into 100 events! CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU. The thought, planning and time that you put into an Appleseed Clinic is obvious to students and instructors that work with you.

Here are some pictures my father took.  Lots of pictures of us "glassing", but target detection/identification is VERY important and  often the most difficult task of a rifleman.
