Ramblin' Wreck

The first ever Project Appleseed KD IBC is in the books and it was fantastic! We are blessed in the Tennessee Valley with multiple great ranges to shoot KD and it was time to start training the next generation of KD instructors and shoot bosses.

This was a two day classroom-only event although four instructors, including the old Wreck on his kneely mobile, arrived a day early and availed ourselves of the facility at the most awesome rifle range in the country, the CMP's Civilian Marksmanship Park in Talladega, AL about an hour away from Calera where the IBC was scheduled. If you haven't been yet you should put this on your bucket list of things to do one day.

The COF for the event focused on a comprehensive list of all the things you need to plan for a KD:

  • Why we do KD
  • A comprehensive block on trajectory including BSZ, NZ, FZ, RTZ, and come ups. Students were then tasked with teaching the block to standards.
  • Range estimation using front sight and optics (no electronic devices) using MOA and Mils. Again, each student had to display competence by teaching the block to Senior Instructors and their fellow students.
  • A complete block on target detection with examples of how to apply these skills at a KD if range terrain and time permits.
  • Wreck's event marketing and admission policy for KD
  • Planning the event - Picking a range
  • Desirable and undesirable features when choosing a new range.
  • Things you  need extra for a KD that you probably don't need for a 25 meter event.
  • How to lay out the target/shooting lines
  • The financials of a KD event.
  • Environmental factors of KD shooting (wind, temperature and altitude)
  • Troubleshooting on the line for KD shooters
  • Scoring for KD
  • How to make a shoot fun. Top Shot Appleseed
We had 12 students who all did a fantastic job of picking up the material and demonstrating that their ability to competently run an event. I look forward to working with all of them on the line at upcoming KD events in the area.

Next KD is in Ramseur on August 27-28. See you there.

It was a great time in Calera, with Appleseeders from Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and Arkansas coming together!

Here are some pics from the weekend, mostly credit to Ramblin' Wreck and TJ8:

Since Talladega was so close... it would be a shame to miss it. Several instructors went down early on Friday to enjoy the day.
