If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. (James Madison)

"Young man, what we meant in going for those Redcoats was this: we always had governed ourselves and we always meant to. They didn't mean we should."
(Captain Levi Preston, of the Danvers militia, at age 91, remembering the day)

That it is an indispensable duty which we owe to God, our country, ourselves and posterity, by all lawful ways and means in our power to maintain, defend and preserve those civil and religious rights and liberties, for which many of our fathers fought, bled and died, and to hand them down entire to future generations.  Suffolk Resolves, September 9, 1774, attributed to Dr. Joseph Warren

   Winterseed 2015

The Shoot Boss was getting a little nervous about the staffing for this one-day Winterseed, so he sounded the Muster drum, and this cadre responded.
How could they not, it's THIS cadre! What a great group.

I've often thought that one-day Appleseed's were a little bittersweet. On one hand, they are way better than nothing. On the other, they are, well, one day.

Saturday morning started dark and quite brisk, not unusual for Alaska in November. Setup complete, check-in complete, introductions made, all safety rules explained, chorused, and reinforced, 19 fellow patriots brought their rifles to the line.
Let it begin;
Today's shooters were predominantly returnees with a few new faces; a good mix for a one-day AS. An excellent POI and a very teachable group of shooters is all any AS cadre could ask for, and what we had on Saturday. The morning progressed nicely and before anyone knew it, it was time for lunch. Fisherdawg and Pete! gave a very rousing 1st and 2nd Strike combo and then it was back at it.

A well-orchestrated instruction plan continued, with the Shoot Boss keeping a trained eye. A few more concepts were hit upon but not beleaguered in lieu of more time being available for AQTs. A good call, this group was ready. The man can read his shooters.
Afternoon break, and Fourfans took his first shot at telling the 3rd Strike to a very captivated audience. I think it was well received (note the author). And we were back at it.

Net results:
Alaska has 4 new Riflemen

Dave, who knocked it out of the park with a 244, then kind of coasted into a comfortable 223. Nice shooting.

Ed, a Board of Directors member at this range, came in with a 222 and followed it with a 223. He loved the idea of shooting a 223 with a .223 (didn't have the heart to tell him that .223/5.56 is actually .224) Say nice things about Appleseed to the Board, Ed,, lol.

Emma Mae, a new cashier at this range and an experienced high school shooter, shoots her first AS and boom, 211, I guess you'll fit in nicely with your co-workers,, and yeah, you're welcome.

Izzy S.  Hmm,, Izzy,,,,(15yo) this young lady shot with us in Oct. and did fairly well. But she got frustrated with herself, her rifle and it seemed, everything. No-one on the cadre expected to see her again. Guess who is Alaska Rifleman #95!!!! She made the cut with a 210,, hey 210 is all we ask. What a pleasure to see you make it. A true AS success story. YOU are why WE do this.

All in all, a great shoot, some of our returning shooters learned that shooting in November is a lot different than shooting in June. Overall, virtually every shooter and instructor felt that the entire group significantly improved their skills. Many vowed to return in the Spring. What higher compliment?

Remember……. a RIFLEMAN persists.

It was a great day, and I was honored to be a part of it. Mostly because in the debrief no-one could come up with an "ugly".
And now.. "a long winter's nap".
IBC in Jan anyone???
