Patriots weekend at Miamisburg was truely a special weekend.  Where to start.  Arrived at the range Friday night to setup and had the assistance of several of our shooters who came in Friday night to set up camp at the range. The line was set, the flags were hung and the night ended with fellowship around the campfire.

Saturday morning dawned in glorious fashion. The instructor team arrived shortly there after and 16 highly motivated shooters soon arrrived for check in. Before we knew it, the welcome and safety brief were delivered, rifles were brought to the line and we were shooting the first Red Coat of the weekend. It was clear we had a great group of shooters. We had 10 of 16 shooters competent at 100 and 6 of 16 at 200 on Saturday morning. 2 joined Daniel Morgan's rangers.

Instructions on the steady hold factors, the six steps, and NPOA followed and the team worked hard to absorb all the info coming from the "fire hose". During the NPOA presentation, we had a very special surprise.  A B25 Mitchell bomber, the airplane that Gen. Jimmy Doolittle and 15 other pilots used to attack Japan in "Doolittle's Raid" on April 18th, 1942. (what an interesting date). The B25 made three passes over our range before heading off.  We stopped all instruction so the shooters could appreciate the sight and sound of this iconic WWII aircraft. Many years ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Doolitle's Raiders reunion dinner in Columbus, Ohio so this was very moving for me to see that airplane fly by our shoot.

Instructions continued and the shooters worked hard at applying what was presented. It seemed like no time at all and it was time for lunch and the first strike.  After lunch, we were back on the line addressing seated and off hand. Shep presented the Second strike at our afternoon break and we were back on the line to complete a practice and a "for score" AQT. Spirits were high as the weather was perfect and everyone was in a good mood. One of our instructors commented that he had a screech owl at his house that was keeping him up at night (the owl from My Cousin Vinny), to which Buckeye Trapper commented "no problem, they taste like bald eagle" which cracked up all the intructors nearby. The Saturday Red Coat was shot and the day ended with Del providing a moving Third Strike. Luther Blanchard patches were presented to our young shooters (Caleb, Adam, and Robbie) and they were complimented on their focus and safe performance on the line. Patriot's Day patches were presented to the adult attendees and "Bloody Butcher" posters were shared with all.

The weather Saturday had been perfect, the forecast for Sunday was the exact opposite. The morning dawned overcast and the forcast was for rain starting mid-day and thunder storms by mid-afternoon. As such, after a safety and instruction point review, we hit the line hard and started the AQT grind trying to beat the rain. We were pleased to create three new riflemen/riflewomen during this grind.  We had instuctors rotating into the line during the grind and when an IIT forgot his chamber flag, one of our shooters commented "first time to the range?" which amused everybody within earshot.

The rain started late morning but we persevered shooting several additional AQTs. Lunch arrived, Dangerous Old Men were presenteda and we shot the Patriot's Day salute just after lunch. We were concerned that incoming thunderstorms would prevent us from shooting the volley at 4pm as planned and the Patriots deserved a volley.  After a couple more AQT's, the Sunday Red Coat target was shot and our call to action was delivered to a bunch of very wet shooters. The line was broken down and KD instructions were presented in the range clubhouse. The weekend ended with a call to action and a very special weekend came to a close.

My thanks to Shep, Del, Handmeat, LongRifleman, DGMilty, and Buckeye Trapper for instructing at this event.  Having this many talented instructors on the line makes for a super shoot.

Pictures to follow.

Thanks to all who attended in Miamisburg; it was a pleasure to have each you there. I can see many more rifleman's patches in the future for those who sign up for another Appleseed. Attached are a few more photos.

Thanks again to everyone for making another great Patriots Day weekend!

It was especially nice to connect again with DGMilty and MeanStreaker, in addition to meeting everyone else.

Chad, Corvette is right. I had not been able to get my .22lr out to the range in almost a year. NPOA, dry firing, reduced sized targets, and a shot timer app help immensely. Even if just for 5-10mins each day. Best of all, its free!
