We had good weather for shooting all weekend; no rain, warm and sunny bordering on hot but with low humidity.  At some points lack of a breeze made it a little uncomfortable but compared to this summer's earlier sauna like atmosphere punctuated by heavy downpours it would be hard to really complain.

13 shooters signed up but we were plagued by attrition.  We had one instructor injured and one sick at the start and one shooter show up with a broken ankle.  Two shooters had to reschedule at the last minute.  Of the 11 who showed up one had jet lag and decided not to shoot.  10 of them total made it to the line on Saturday.

ProTeq Academy is a great place to shoot and the owner is very friendly to our organisation.  It seemed like every time we turned around Don was there asking if we needed anything else.  We had three portable shelters provided by the range to shade the firing line and the local volunteer fire department makes lunch for us.  Lunch was cold cuts and home made ice cream on Saturday, what more could we need?

On Sunday the attrition hit us hard.  We had one shooter call in sick, another was called in to work and one couple had a scheduling problem.  All in all we had four show up to fire the morning red coat and while that was going on our Blue Hat went home sick.  The day was hotter than Saturday and the breeze just couldn't seem to kick up.  We gutted it out with one instructor barely able to speak, another injured and our broken-ankle shooter hobbling back and forth as best she could.  Another shooter had no fewer then three rifles break on her during the day (one broken extractor, one scope mount that worked its way loose and one failure to extract so severe that I broke a cleaning rod on it) but with a quick repair during prep and some steady shooting she still managed to complete the AQT.  Philagothan ran the shooters through a quick game of shooting out some black stars with a prize of two boxes of donated ammo going to the best team.  The volunteer fire department showed up at lunch with ham salad, chicken salad, chips and home made cookies.  They brought an additional gift of sweet corn still in the husk for all of us to take home and cook later.  Shooters and instructors were given bag fulls of corn to take to their cars.

By the time we reached the Known Distance component our shooter with the broken ankle was done for the day due to swelling and another shooter was over heated.  We finished the day with the final two shooters completing KD with their .22s and then the instructors provided a variety of centerfire rifles (SKS, Moisin, AR15, FAL) for the remaining shooters and instructors to take turns whaling on some steel.

We had one shooter take her orange hat and everyone showed improvement.

A few special mentions:

Dave, we are all impressed with your dedication and perseverance.

Tracy, way to be tough!  Heal up and I hope to see you back at a future shoot, you have what it takes.

Hunter, all of the instructors were impressed with how much better you did.

Amy, you were really coming along, hope to see you at a future shoot.

Van and Rae; good job!  You both showed a lot of promise, hope to see you back!

Another excellent shoot at ProTEQ.  We were well-fed and the weather, while hot, was pretty good for shootin'.  As Eddie mentioned we had a pretty good showing on Saturday and then life attacked on Sunday.  Work, previous commitments and illness hit us hard.  But we had Dave (who drove from Illinois both days), Tracy and her ankle, JoAnne and Jacob who made it worthwhile to show up and run a shoot.

Rae and Vann, it was good to see you again.  Brecken, I was heartbroken when you didn't show on Sunday.  Make it back for another one soon.  Amy, get back and bring your son.  Hunter, big improvement from last time.  Keep up the good work!

Once again, a big thanks to ProTEQ and the Johnson Volunteer Fire Department for being such great hosts.

C ya,

Something neat about this shoot was the number of family pairings.  Between instructors and shooters we had three husband and wife pairs, three mother and son pairs and a grandmother and grandson pair.  Not bad between fifteen people.
