I have given patches (or bossed the shoot where they were given their patches) to every member of a family three times.  They were the first.  I've got some favorite students, Syd's one of them.

When I first read the title of the thread I thought we might be talking about Brown's wife, cause I know we weren't talking about Brown himself.   ;D

That of course was not Paul Revere's horse but a borrowed mount. On pawn stars they asked what was the name of PR's horse and correct answer was he didn't own a horse. It is good she remembered the name from a seed though.

I can never forget the name brown beauty.  I was practicing giving my strikes on a lady at work.  when I got to this part and I said his horses name was brown beauty.  She proceeded to chime in with "that is my stripper name!!"  it was hilarious.  Almost every time I give the strike and mention it I want to giggle :)

Indiana Appleseed:  Farm Bred, Brass Fed

Lord make me fast and accurate. Let my aim be true, and my hands faster than those who would seek to destroy me.  Grant me victory over my foes, and those  that wish to do harm to me and mine. Let not my last thought be if I only had my Gun; and Lord if today is truly the day that you take me home, let me die in a pile of empty brass.

How could Revere not have owned a horse, when he spent much of the year before 4/18/75 riding all over the colonies to communicate and exchange documents with Committees of Safety?

It would make sense that he did not take his own horse on the famous ride, as he had to sneak out of Boston in a rowboat.

For what it's worth, in my wanderings of research, I ran across a reference that Brown Beauty was a Narragansett breed.   A Narragansett was a specific American breed...created for the needs of the time, specially bred to "travel long distances on poor roads", known for speed and stamina (but not necessarily beauty)  and popular with known owners such as George Washington.

Me personally, I think it fitting that the horse that enabled Paul Revere's ride was derived from an English breed, with a mixing of other traits, to become uniquely American breed.  A quote from the Brown Beauty article

QuoteInstead of the jarring two-beat trot, the Narragansett offered a smooth four-beat saddle gait, favored for its speed and comfort. In addition the breed had an amiable, courageous temperament vital in times of crisis. The Narragansetts were a direct derivative from Old English Ambler (palfreys) which had been taken across the Atlantic by the pioneers and later became extinct in Britain; and of course are the forerunners of today s American Saddlebred.

Those sound like pretty good qualities of a Rifleman...  ^:)^

Footnote...hey, I think I thunk up a new story for one of my benedictions.

But the breed became extinct around 1880.
