Once again, Redwood River Sportsmens club hosted an Appleseed.

We returned to Marshall, Minnesota this past weekend.  Your humble narrator was assisted by John H, known on the forum as Habs.

SATURDAY:

It was sunny, reallllllly sunny.  Shelter was provided by Mike Z., a rifleman  from previous shoots, who brought his 2 sons, Sean and Jared.

They were joined by Carl S, Brian S (also a RM)  , and Jerzy B.

6 shooters faced the first Redcoats of the day, and  the Redcoats did pretty good.  But their luck would not hold throughout the weekend.

squares were put up, shot full of holes, then taken down, to be replaced with more squares.  Demonstrations were given, and knowledge imparted.

As the morning wore on,  groups began to tighten up.

Next, lunch at the clubhouse ( the nicest clubhouse of any range I've ever visited) ,  sufficient history was imparted to leave a taste for more.

we then returned to the range,

greencoats were posted,  they fared worse than their Redcoat brethren.

the participants then faced off against the big, bad, AQT.

AQTs were shot,  corrections were made, scores  began to rise among the new shooters.  Mike Z and Brian shot RM again and again.  I thought they might get bored, but no.  Brian made it a challenge by swapping his autoloader for a bolt gun, and still shooting RM scores.  Mike Z.   shot RM scores while also helping us run things.  He is also a 4-H shooting coach.  Habs did lots of one-on-one coaching.

We finished up with a second Redcoat, and the Redcoats suffered mightily.

back to the cool of the clubhouse, more history, followed by the benediction.

revived, and sufficiently fired up, the shooters elected to return to the firing line and  continue shooting AQTs

Sean Z  achieved his RM score before we quit for the second time that day.  The apple does not fall far from the tree.

Younger brother Jared, tried mightily, but it the RM score eluded him.  He does possess other talents, however.  He attracts hot brass better than  any other shooter I've seen.  Nonetheless, "A Rifleman persists" , and Jared is living proof of that.  Somewhere down the Appleseed trail,  a RM patch awaits him.

SUNDAY:

hot again, but cloud cover and refreshing winds made it tolerable

Mike H,  known on the forum as JoeMorgan,  arrived to work his first shoot as a newly minted orange hat.  He was accompanied by his wife Deb.  She was there to shoot.

Redcoats were posted and shot , followed by refresher sessions and squares.

Then, AQT followed AQT.

lunch was taken, where your humble narrator was interviewed by a local newspaper.

we returned to the firing line and resumed AQTs

Carl S.  joined the club of those who have been "baptized in the waters of the North Bridge"  when he shot exactly 210.

A fun/team shoot was inserted to break things up.  Star targets were subjected to 45 seconds of intense and accurate fire, the winning team being those with the most of the white star being shot away.  bragging rights went  to Mike and Sean Z.

then, an air-conditioning break back to the clubhouse, some stories about Dangerous Old Men.

more AQTs.

A final Redcoat was shot, and they fared not well at all.

Benediction and farewell, then a 250-mile drive back to face the rigors of Monday.

Congratulations to all who participated.

JOEMORGAN

What an enjoyable Sunday. Those were some of the most squared away young men I've had the pleasure to be around. They switched between a bolt Savage and the 10 22s and still were shooting great groups and scores.

Thanks also to Kevin, John, and Mike Z...Deb and myself had a great day.

It was a seriously enjoyable day.  The line almost ran itself. It was truly a group of people who were serious about their business.

I was gladdened to see kids discovering the simple joy of shooting the AQT with a bolt-action.  Brian S. was shooting that Savage like a "poor shepherd boy from the Urals".

Hope to see you all again on the trail.
