We had an absolutely fantastic SOLD OUT Appleseed weekend atVTS (Volunteer Training Site) Smyrna, Tn. This is a National Guard range and you could not ask for a better venue for shooting. The covered shooting linemeans inclement weather is never a factor but we had beautiful weather for this event.

Because we have to convoy through the gate here we are sometimes a little late to start in Smyrna but our admin group, Jill and Regan, made it to the line for setup while Mellie handed out the forms in the parking lot where the shooters assembled for the convoy. Fortunately, Sgt."Superdave#2" Watrous, the facility range officer, had everything set up exceptwhat we had to bring. That's why we named him SuperDave at the last event.

The instructor team of Armalite, Runnfree, Tellico,Macnshoot, and Superdave#2, with Shoot Boss TnColonel as the designated relief, were set to go but first there was an award to give out. Regan B. (forum nameArwen) had shot a Rifleman score of 227 last July but was only 12 at the time. Since then she's had a blue hat and worked 5 events including attending an IBC(Instructor Boot Camp) in February. This was her first event since her 13th birthday so TnColonel made the presentation of her orange hat and now the instructor group was complete.

After I told the First Strike, we launched into the accelerated training format by some of the best instructors I've ever worked with.  When it looked like we were running behind, Armalite helped us catch up by doing a great job of covering a big block of instruction at one fell swoop. With Tellico as Line Boss we caught up quickly.

On the line we had shooters that ranged in experience from hardly touched a rifle before to career military. By the end of the day although we did not have any new Riflemen we had tremendous improvement on RedCoats. We went from two 400 yard shooters in the morning to 4 in the afternoon.

TnColonel told the Second Strike at lunch while I finished up with the Third later in the afternoon.
At the Saturday benediction we awarded 7 youth patches toyoung men and women who decided it was more important to come hear the historyof our country and learn the skills that bought it for us than engage in whatmost of their peers fill their time with these days.

I could tell something was going to be special on Sunday when we got the results from the first Redcoat target. Two shooters cleaned the target and they were both LADIES! That threw down the gauntlet for the guys.

On Sunday the crowd was smaller as some shooters attended church but came back in at noon. We also added two new shooters who had been unable to make it on Saturday. During one of the morning AQTs, we got our first new Rifleman of the weekend. John P, justsomedude on the forum, attending his second event at VTS Smyrna, shot a very impressive 229 with iron sights! HUZZAH. By the end of the day we had 3 more. Jacob H. shot a re-qualifying score of221, Scott M. shot 213 and Jill B., on her 5th Appleseed, shot a 222. Her comment was "a Rifleman persists."

We had several repeat shooters who came VERY close, like208, but didn't quite get to 210. They assured us they'll be back soon. This group as a whole had some very persistent shooters. They were eager to learnand tried to incorporate the instruction to improve their shooting.

Jill B and TnColonel told several Dangerous Old Men storiesafter lunch, each relating their favorite.

At the end of the day we had 4 new Riflemen and as importantly, 3 new orange hats: John P., Jacob H., and Jill B. (Mrs.Ramblinwreck although she refuses to commit to that forum name) to help spread the Appleseed message and commit to teach others to shoot as well as they can.

Links to pictures will be posted soon. If you took any, please feel free to contribute them in a link.

Thanks to VTS Smyrna for hosting the event and to TnColonelfor once again selling out a Tennessee shoot. I'll be on the line at Manchester, TN on May 26 - 27. Hope to see you there.
