Another great weekend at Appleseed!  O0 What a great club and a wonderfully diverse group of shooters, from brand new to the seasoned expert. Everyone saw some progress through the weekend, and we had a great time despite the cold, the rain, and the wind. I will be back later to fill in more details, but for now everyone else can start posting up your ideas and pics.
DryFire

So now that I am home and have access to my notes  ;) lets really get this started. I arrived Fri. night and met up with Steamer and his daughter all of us quite unsure of what the weather might be for the weekend, we just knew there might be some rain.  ++) Larry, our contact at the club, came out and went over the rules and guidelines on the club's side and then handed over the club house and rifle range to Appleseed for the weekend. I can't say enough good things about the Lima Sabres Shooting Association, these guys were perhaps the most accommodating and friendly folks I have meet on the trail. It doesn't hurt that they have a first rate club as well with pits on the 300 yd line no less.

We were joined shortly thereafter by Vernon and his son Doug who decided to tough it out by camping with some of the instructors. After spending some time socializing, fellow instructors KAH and D showed up with Matt to help out with any set up tasks. We did a bit of set up, better acquainted ourselves with the club and then I headed off to bed. While I slept little did I know but none other than Dinky Dao rolled in and set up shop in the club house. You have to keep your eye on that Dinky you never know when or where she might show up.  :cool2:

Sat. morning dawned after a dry night  ^:)^ but it was just as we finished setting up and launched into the safety briefing with all of our pre-reg shooters present and accounted for, plus one Sunday only who decided to make it both days  ;D  I started into the 4 rules and lo and behold the rain began, and rain it did, all day Sat. however we were lucky that the heaviest rains seemed to fall while we were inside at lunch. We worked through the prone steady hold factors, the 6 steps to firing a shot, we sought the sometimes elusive NPOA, and learned that all the math we did in elementary school still works with IMC. About this time we were certainly wet and getting just a bit cold. We moved inside for lunch and a lesson on the language that our targets speak. We heard of the choices and actions of Paul Revere, William Dawes and the men of Lexington on that fateful morning of April 19, 1775.

After lunch it was back to the rain, the sacrafices of our forefathers fresh on our minds. We got out of prone and worked on the seated position and rifleman's cadence. All the while the heavens felt it necessary to keep us in a well hydrated environment. The mud began to stick to the bottom of our boots, but the lessons kept coming, and the groups kept shrinking. It wasn't long however till the cold and wet cut to the bone and it was time for another break. This time we honored the men of Concord, Isaac Davis, Luther Blanchard, and the 14 thousand others who participated in the fighting that day, and the 20,000 who later besieged the British in Boston. Just imagine 14,000 men in less than 24 hours, all by word of mouth, a few signal guns, some church bells, and men on horseback. 14,000 men who knew very much what they were about and where they stood concerning their futures and more importantly the future for their posterity.

The next thing we knew we were back to the mud firing line for the standing position and the evening Redcoat target. It had been a wet day as we drank not only from the water from the sky above but also from the firehose of knowledge that is Appleseed. A few closing and parting words for the day, and it was time to retire to a warm and dry club house for a bit.

The funny thing with weather is that it never seems to cooperate, and no sooner were we done for the day, that the rain stopped. With the rain gone the few stragglers decided to have some fun. We dug out the centerfires, and placed targets at 200 yards. Steamer handed up a target about 5 inches wide and 12 inches long so we painted it orange and hung it out there for all to try their hands on. It was a well perforated target by the time we were done.  :--- Even better however was the bonus we found at the target line. Some kind soul had left behind 3 perfectly good apples, and well this being Appleseed we knew that applesauce was in order. Of course we make our applesauce with lead cores and copper jackets  ..:.. Dinky made the last shot in the last little bit of light taking the top off of the last of those red coated apples.

That night the wind blew all night long, but we continued to be dry. By morning the wind had dried out the carboard, and thankfully my tent.  8) We kicked off the day with a wonderfull review from Dangerous D and back to the line it was. A red coat led into carding the sights giving the instructors time to work with each student one on one. From there we jumped into our first AQT. Some good solid scores were found despite the persistant and now cold wind blowing around the targets. So solid were the scores that we found amongst us a man who knows well what he is about, a repeat Rifleman. Joshua congrats, and it was nice to see Dinky proved wrong and that it wasn't a "fluke". After our first AQT we switched it up and made the students teach for a bit with an enjoyable ball and dummy that I know for one shooter gave us a chance to get his sights dialed in a bit closer and provided one of the best groups I had seen yet. Lunch included a talk about how to take what we had learned at 25M and make it work at 500M. Then we returned to the line for the grind, 2 AQTs back to back, some dangerous old men, and a mad minute drill to show what teamwork can accomplish. Then back to the AQTs. it was. We found amongst us yet another man who knows well what he is about, a hearty congrats to John. Not only did we find us another rifleman but a new orange hat as well. Matt "captain hook" followed me around the state late last year and the first part of this year with his family, showing up at almost all the events I attened. I got to watch as a young man came to the line a bit more confident with each event. He at last shot that rifleman's score and this weekend he took the coveted Orange Hat, Huzzaahhh. Matt I look forward to working with you more often. Then before we knew it, it was time for the evening redcoat, some cleanup, and the long drive home.

The most unpleasant part of an Appleseed is the part where you have to leave. We had a great group of shooters spanning from South Carolina, to Indiana, north to Michigan, and then back south to Ohio. From beginner to expert it was a great weekend. Thanks to all.

Missing your target in the rain while laying in a puddle of mud sucks. :wb:  Hitting your target in the rain while laying in a puddle of mud is lots of fun. O0

I'd like to thank all of the instructors who came out and did a good job running the shoot and coaching us shooters.  Dry fire is a pro and led a great team.  The young ladies that showed up with their parents and not much prior experience really inspired me to get my daughters to an Appleseed.  Its really incredible the diversity of folks that run and shoot Appleseed.  It is a testament to the program that brand new shooters and ones that have been at it for a while can be challenged and coached on the same line.  One of the best things is that I ran into some local guys and we plan on hooking up and doing some shooting sometime soon.

Some of us were able to stay late on Saturday and stretch the range out a little bit to just over 200m.  Dinky Dao showed up made what I would have previously considered an impossible shot while the rest of us put some good hits on at that range.

Anyway, myself and the two guys that I brought had a good time and look forward to seeing some pics.

I wanna hear more about this impossible shot... and see some pictures of muddy Appleseeders!

I hear there was a new orange hat.......................... :cool2:  (Ahem!)

It started in Athens, about a year ago (10/31/09) with a Saturday only shoot.  That's all it took to get hooked on Appleseed.  From there, the trail has led throughout the Great State of Ohio - Athens, Gibsonburg, Miamisburg, and Lima. Over the course of the year, there have been a ton of great Instructors and IITs that contributed.  Thanks to everyone! (a Dad can never be too proud!)

Here's the photo of the newest Orange Hat - Congratulations Matthew!

What a great organization and a great weekend, excluding the cold, wet, and windy part.  I fully agree with Josh's statement above - "Hitting your target in the rain while laying in a puddle of mud is lots of fun."  I met a lot of great people that I hope to shoot with again sometime.  Next time y'all will have to come down to South Carolina where we have better weather.  With the weather conditions, I thought there was no way that I would get my Rifleman, but with the instruction from the great Instructors and Instructors in Training, I made it even with the crazy wind.  I will be bringing my boys and hopefully my wife to an Appleseed.

It is hard to describe to others that haven't done it what it is like to be on the range for a windy, muddy, cold, wet weekend and end up so tired yet so energized!  Thanks to all of the shooters and instructors for another memorable AS weekend.  This was clearly an exceptional group of people with open attitudes and a dedication to making themselves and therefore our world a better place!

Looking forward to seeing you all (and your family and friends) on the AS trail again soon!

Doc Willi

I want to thank all of the instructors. They were very helpful, and I learned so much this weekend.
I also want to thank the Lima Sabres for hosting the event. It is incredible that we could have so much fun in such bad weather.

Here are some pictures that Archer took.

Slim, I think my son, brother and a couple of friends shot at a shoot you were at in a Carolton KY pasture a few years ago.  Guy was shoot boss, does that sound right?

I don't think I've ever had that much fun while being cold, wet and almost blown over all at the same time.

The family down from Michigan made the entire shoot for me.  To see them go from not knowing how to load a mag to hitting the paper and then the target was a thrill.

Thanks again to all the instructors, you were ALL great.  And congrats again to Matthew.

Me, I'm still trying to figure out how I hit all four head shots on the Redcoats and not manage to shoot a rifleman score.

Next time for sure!

Thank you for posting the pics Steamer.  O0
Have you had any luck getting the video of the team shoot onto youtube?

This such a fun event (even with the weather), i came home energized about getting involved. All the instructors were great.  ^:)^
I have started teaching my 9 year old daughter the positions. She is excited and wants to come to an appleseed next year. :~

Everybody there was so nice and helpful.
Congrats to Matthew for becoming an instructor in training, and to Josh for achieving rifleman again. Also to John for making rifleman.

I hope to see everyone again

Doc Willi that is great that you both had such a great weekend it was a pleasure having you on the line.  I look forward to meeting your daughter but why wait until next year??? There is a shoot in Athens on Halloween weekend that is going to be really fun, well staffed and have lots of kids and families there.  You can even take part in the food program that the club offers so you'll be well fed!  It would be a great weekend of father daughter bonding!  I know I'll be there with Matthew, Kenric, Emma (13) and nephew Tim (13)

Archer

Steamer - Thank you for posting the photos.

As bad as the weather was, I keep reminding myself that the Colonial Army had to endure much worse, with not as good of clothing.  Still had a blast.

Congratulations to Matthew for taking an Orange Hat, and to Josh for shooting some more Rifleman scores.
The family from Michigan was also an inspiration, seeing them go from not really even knowing the rifles to shooting shots in the black. Brian, hope to see you and your family at another Appleseed someday.

I really want to thank all of the Instructors and IITs.  Without your help, I don't think I would have shot as well or had as much fun.

I am trying to get involved down here in SC.  The South Carolina Appleseed does not seem to be as well organized as in Ohio. Still trying to get in contact with the SC Appleseed top dog.

I am also trying to talk my wife into attending an Appleseed, but getting some resistance.  Any ideas?

SC will be lucky to have you on their line either as a participant or as an orange hat.  As for getting your wife interested take a look at the thread that is on the main AS page specifically about women participating.  Reassure her that it is a welcoming and supportive environment that welcomes participants of all levels.  My guess is that if she tries it once she'll enjoy it.

Archer

Thank you Dangerous D.
I will look at that thread and use some of it.

Thanks to all the instructors.  I had a great time (albeit cold and wet) and took home a lot of things to work on.  I thought the people, training and history were awesome.  I especially commend DryFire for his love of history, and more importantly the fact that he "gets it", "feels it" and appreciates what our Founding Fathers, Mothers, Sons & Daughters did providing Americans with Freedom and Liberty, hereto unknown in the world to such a degree.

Don't squander what we've been given!  Wake up your family, friends and neighbors to the threats to liberty by Central Banks and unvirtuous politicians.  It's a struggle, I know, but keep up the fight.

Again, I feel so much more in tune with my rifle and confident in the basics, rather...foundations, I was taught by a great group of people.

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly. But the traitor moves among those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the galleys, heard in the very hall of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor - he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims, and wears their face and their garment, and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation - he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city - he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared.

Come spring time we will have the weekends available. ^:)^
I am excited and can't wait till then.

Yes, persistence  :wb:.  I have no doubt about her being able to out shoot me.  I taught archery for years and the women outshoot the men in the end.  They don't tend to try to force thing.

Hey Archer,
There are some all lady Appleseeds that might make it easier for your wife to agree to attend.
Took my wife quite some time to attend and then her first time out, Rifleman.  It was unreal.
You are right though, the ladies tend to outshoot the men because we are so stubborn and have
ingrained bad habits.  That's what an AS weekend is about, getting out the bad habits and instilling
the good, both shooting and love of our great country.
If you can make it to Athens sometime, we'd love to have you. . . and your wife.  There's an all ladies shoot
October 16/17 here.  I know it's short notice, but it'll be a good time and Athens hospitality might even rival
southern hospitality.

Take care,
RPD
