In looking at the weather forecast all week leading up to this event, it was a solid 100% chance of this for both days:

???

No worries!  A little bit of weather is good for us and helps us focus on the Rifleman's Bubble.  It also allows us to reconnect to some of the sacrifices our forefathers made to secure our Liberty.  The least we can do is hone our marksmanship skills while getting a little wet.

So I packed all of my rain gear and left happily early Saturday morning to do what we do - Appleseed.   O0

Someone must have been looking out for us. Maybe John Adams was looking down on his Posterity and put in a good word with the big guy.  Despite threatening skies all morning, the heavens waited to open up ....... and open up they did!........... until the minute we got under the picnic shelter for our lunch break.  After a 30 minute downpour, the clouds moved off and some sunshine poked through just as we were getting ready to head back to the firing line.  That great weather held up for a few hours and it only started raining again late in the afternoon, which was a welcome relief from somewhat warm temps and humidity.

Same story for Sunday!  I don't know how it happened, but we were mostly spared from severe weather warnings.  Funny how that works out.  We awoke to sunny blue skies that only began to darken later in the day.  As soon as it was time for lunch - DELUGE!   As soon as Gopher Boy finished talking about some Dangerous Old Men and it was time to take our gear to the distance rage - SUNSHINE!  Unfortunately, around 2:30 PM, just as we were returning from the 500 yard range... the thunder-boomers opened up and brought some lightening along.  As Appleseeders, we know we soldier on in 3 feet of snow, heavy rains, threat of tornadoes, whatever... but lightening is definitely a show stopper.

We huddled up under the shelter as its metal roof got pounded and talked amongst ourselves and what each of us can do to get our country back on track.  After 45 minutes or so (3:15ish), we looked around, consulted NOAA radios and iPhone Apps ("Gopher Boy has an App for that"   ;D ) and realized we'd be waiting at least another 45 minutes or so to make sure lightening leaves the area.... and decided to call it a day after each student confirmed they were local to the area and promised to come back to a future event since they missed out on a couple hours.

I really wanted that lightening to go away so we could give a few more AQT chances to a certain oh-so-close Rifleman in our midst who put together a score of 204..... shooting a bolt action rifle..... left handed!    :o    That was a fine display of Marksmanship.

Congratulations to Ben who earned his Rifleman patch with a great score of 217!  Very happy to have you amongst us!

All in all, this was a great shoot where everyone improved their Marksmanship skills and came to better know their Heritage amongst fine fellow Americans.

And the 500 yard steel certainly helps.  ^-^

As does the incredible hospitality of Lisa (Butt Stock's Mom), Dasha (FuzzyMath's wife), and Mary.  Swedish meat balls!  Mashed potatoes!   Meat Loaf!  Creamed Chicken!  Green Beans!  Pepperoni stuffed rolls!  German Potato Salad!  Apple bread cake!  Mixed Berry Pie!  The food was unbelievable!!!

Thanks to everyone for making this a safe, fun, successful shoot.  Hopefully others with pictures will chime in.

Sounds like a great shoot. It is amazing how every now and then there seems to be just a bit of providence around Appleseed  ;) If I read this AAR right, it also sounds like we have a bit of a competition between those in Gibsonburg and those in Athens on who can treat Ohio to the best food  >:D Hmm, with luck perhaps I can help in judging that contest next month.

Another fine appleseed in the books at Gibsonburg !

A Fine group of Americans came ready to shoot and hear the Heritage.

Congrats Ben on earning his patch ! and he absolutely spanked that 500 yrd target in a rifleman's cadence with my M1a...huzzah

and his com padre mister left handed shooting with a right handed bolt...phew....never saw something like that  :~ 204

and of course Ginny ! a rifle newb no more !

A trio of really great shooters from swanton ....knockin oh so close. Hans had the steadiest rifle I'd seen in awhile. That barrel was absolutely still except for the tell tale up and down breathing

Alan and Larry and his son Zack.. all  making great improvement !

Then the FOOD. Athens ....you're in trouble . You thought Lisa went down to the February IBC to look after Butt Stock. NOPE she was scouting the competition in order to raise the bar on you folks down there muahahaha  &)

My thanks to all and I hope to see you all again without the lightning !

see you over Memorial Day...I'm sure Lisa and Mary are already figuring out something delicious to serve !

Sounds like you guys and gals had a great time.

I'm glad you realize that Athens set the bar for everyone else to strive for. :cool2:  We're looking forward to all you big hitters trying to knock us off of the mountain. O0  Nothing like a little bit of friendly competition.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the trail.

Another Excellent shoot.

It's like coming home everytime I come back to G'burg.  It's my Ohio family!  (I'm still not going to wear any OSU stuff though  :P ).

Congrats to Ben on a 216, but look out for Tom and that bolt he's knocking on the door.  204 for a lefty with a right handed bolt,  I'm impressed O0

I had such a good time working with every shooter.  If that weather had held out for us we would have had a bunch more.  Shawn, Alan, Hans, Jay, Donavan, your all there stick with it.

Lisa, how could I thank you enough.  I'm telling you that G'burg crew is an eating club with a Heritage and Marksmanship problem.   If you ever get a chance, The Black Swamp Cafe has good eats.  The bad news is it's only open during Appleseeds.

I'm already looking forward to the end of May.
Hope to see you all there.

Here are some of the pictures being chimed in on...............

MS I think you missed naming some of the food, but we will overlook it this time.....

Dryfire you will have the chance to judge yourself what the food is about here..... May menu has not been decided yet.... Athens will win breakfast, as we don't have the kitchen access on the range as they do, so I don't do the breakfast....

RNE come try out our 500 yard range....

GB you have thanked me enough, just keep doing what you do.....

BTW nobody mentioned Lisa took a certificate and a Pink Hat now did they?

What another shoot to go down in the books. I would like to thank MS, GB,and PB. I did not know my mom was gonna get a pink hat. I will say we have to give my mom a nickname I think it should be mama Butt Stock who is in with me on that one?

We had one rifleman but for the rain and thunderstorm we could not go get more. We had so many people so close of getting there rifleman score. The food was very good. On Friday night thanks for GB for bringing his laptop we watched Full Metal Jacket.

Thank you Troy for cutting up the wood for the fire. If you get a chance to make it to Gibsonburg you will not go wrong because first the food then you have the 500 yd range then you have the after time around the fire. You hear so many stories from all the people. Well that is all I have to say for now.

Man, I know that competition is good for the economy and Appleseed, but man, between New Philly and now G'Burg, I don't know if I can handle this kind of stress.  Just kiddin' (kinda  ;)) I'm glad to hear that OHIO is growing as an even better state for Appleseeds.

Ishy, if you want to rise above these competitors, it looks like you might have to stop instructing and start cookin' again!

Yep. And just wait till we get pits behind the 500 yard berm, equipped with Camp Parry surplus target pullers, and we start havin' full distance AQT's on a regular basis. We'll have the best Appleseed site in the state!

Now GoldFish, friendly banter & competition is one thing, but to suggest that a Rifleman (of any age or gender) return to cooking --- now that's over-the-top! Unspeakable. I can't believe you said that. ;)

As Ishy I'm sure will say, "Never!" :)

I don't know, being that she's the one who suggested that Athens will never be outdone by others.  In Athens, the majority of cooks are also Riflemen.  ;D  You are right though, a Rifleman should never return to cooking; there are too many cooks as is, and we need to change that ratio and have the Rifleman number be larger.

What I meant by no rifleman should return to cooking is that...

Those who cook BECAUSE THEY CAN DO NOTHING ELSE and then become Riflemen should not go back to cooking, because shooting is better.  You, Ishy, cook better than a lot of people, giving you the right to cook instead of instruct, if you so choose.
