Title: Welcome to the Minnesota Appleseed forum! - Please Check In
Post by: vmt193 on August 20, 2008, 01:36:41 PM
Hi all,

Now that we've got our own MN State board, we can get down to some serious Appleseeding. Hopefully  we'll spark some interest and pick up a few Rifleman at the first AS shoot next month. Then one of our next missions will be to start looking for someplace near the metro area, and maybe another up in the northwoods, to host an Appleseed. I'm down in the SE corner and don't have any connections much further north than the Wabasha area. If anybody can help out with some possibles, just post here or drop me a PM.

Colycat, checking in to a state thats is going to take off.  One on the best AS's I have ever attended occured in Winnona.

If I can get 4 Kwik Tripp girls to want to attend,  It should be easy to hold another event this year.  And Im not from California ;D

O.K. Now,

We are starting to get some more Minnesotans on here!

Where is everybody else?  I know we've got some 'lurkers' on here.  There's no time to check the temp of the water! Jump on in!

Stand up, be counted, be heard!

We can have a huge year for MN Appleseed this year, but we're counting on your help.

1)Start by checking in here(if you haven't already): so we know who we've got.

2)Then head over to http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=4310.0 and get some flyers for the next shoot. APRIL 18-19!! Winona
Print some off an hand some out. (Even if people can't make it, they'll still here about it.  If it sells out; their interest will spike)

3)If you've already shot Rifleman(or are very close, check into attending an IBC.)  We need to grow our instructor pool so we
can host more shoots.  There should be one coming up in Winona; or Lodi, WI: maybe both, if there's enough interest.

4)We need ranges, get in contact with the ranges in your area.(Some of you have already)  Even better, if someone here has access to land
suitable for an Appleseed, let us know.

vmt193 has gone through a lot of work getting us our first Appleseed and scheduling our 2nd.  Lets not leave it all up to him.

If there's anything I left out, please let me know.

There are alot of shooters near Mankato, based on what I saw at Gander and Scheels over there.  There must be some ranges suitable for an Appleseed between there and the Twin Cities...

There's a range by Waseca but the board is fairly political and not following their own regs (just little things like meetings etc).  I have my doubts that anything could be made to work there.   http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/shooting_ranges/show_range.html?name=Waseca+Sportsman%27s+Club

Beyond that, I'm not sure whats in this neck of the woods.  Most of the ones I do know of are either too small to work or hunting preserves.

I talked to my Dad about setting up a range on his hunting land.  Has an area for a 25 yard range probably handle 25-30 lanes.  He wouldn't want a shoot every month, but may be able to run a couple there a year.  We're gonna talk about it some more in the next couple weeks.  I'm trying to get him to sign up for the 4/19 shoot and get him hooked.  I'm also looking to buy some land to build on myself, then I can have a dedicated range.  I'll keep everyone updated on this as I get more info.

Hey, good work! A shoot up that way would be nice. If we could get one there and another in the west-central part of the state we'd be looking pretty good. Let us know if you need any help with anything.

Hey folks, finally checking in from the Winona shoot here.
[attachment=2]

I tend to shoot at Caribou gun club, which is between Mankato and the cities.  It's fairly nice with berms from 25(feet?) to 500 yards.  It's a nice facility, but really doesn't suit our needs.   Just brining it up incase folks need a range to practice on.  The public can use it, but there's a $20 fee for non-members (yikes!)

Henderson, also on 169 between 'kato and the cities, is something like a $25 yearly membership.  While it doesn't fit the needs of an Appleseed shoot, it's a much cheaper option in that area than Caribou if you don't need to practice out past 70 yards.
[attachment=1]

As far as West Central goes, I know the perfect range: Dawson.  It's only slightly further than Winona for cities folks, but straight west on 212 or 7.  I'll have to get some photos and measurements next time I'm out that way, possibly over Thanksgiving.  The range itself is roughly 100meters wide. There are some obstructions, but there's at least 100 feet of useable width.  The range is privately owned property outside of city limits near a largeish park with plenty of shelters and a few camping spaces. The top of the clubhouse is roughly even with the land nearby, so there's a rather tall natural berm as a saftey barrier. There are downsides of course.  The land to the north is a cemetary and it wouldn't be polite to be shooting during a funeral.  The clubhouse was dilapitated 15 years ago and I haven't been inside since.

I'll go ahead and track down the contact number and maybe have a chat with the guy.

Has anybody looked into Camp Ripley????  I'm not sure if they'd allow it, but it would be worth talking to them...  If no one has already, I'll talk to my Chain of Command and see what I can come up with.  They have a KD range out to 5 or 600 meters, multiple 25 meter ranges, etc...

Let me be the first to say welcome aboard! O0
And congratulations on taking thes first step towards becoming a Rifleman. O0

It's great to see another member from MN!  We don't have too many yet, but we will.
I can't wait to see what the future has in-store for Appleseed in MN, and the Nation.

Winona should be a fantasic Appleseed, on such a historic weekend as well.

Now step into rank, grab a bucket and start bailing. :)
With a little persistance and hard work, soon we may catch up to California! ;)

I look forward to seeing you on the Appleseed Trail.

Hi all:

I just checked in to see what was happening in my "home state".  I am very happy to see so much enthusiasm and energy building back there.  Fantastic!

I'm originally from Minneapolis, but live in CA.  I am very proud of what we are doing out here, but like what Aftermath said about MN catching up with CA.  More power to you!  I

I am hoping you can get a shoot closer to the Twin Cities (preferably to the North), as I do have a few friends and family members out there I would love to see attend shoots and get on board with our noble cause.  They are generally between the Twin Cities and Pine City (70 miles to the North).

I would be proud to help out with instructing or shoot-bossing, should you need it; and continue to prime and recruit friends and family to attend Appleseeds.

Keep up the good work, guys!

Hi All,
Glad Minnesota is still on the map.   Edina High class of 58 had their class
reunion this year and I missed it.  Used to hunt and fish where all the neat
houses have been built,  It's hard to picture there are difficulties finding a
place to shoot.  Live as far west as you can go without having to swim.
Pacific Ocean.  Not many people, and seldom see snow except for this year.
Two days and it was gone O0  Really miss the snow removal by hand %)

Hi all,

I posted to another thread in this forum but just in case this is the official sign up page here I am.  I live in the Twin Cities and am a member of the Oakdale Gun Club and mostly a pistol shooter.  I've got some rifles and am an NRA pistol instructor, retired Army Natl Guard Infantry/Artillery officer and have an intense interest in things that go boom.  Let me know how I can help.

Welcome aboard Sven!

Our main mission right now is searching for ranges and/or private property where we can hold more Appleseeds. We currently have two on the schedule at the Winona Sportsman's Club. The April 18-19 shoot sold out early but there's another one in coming in September. We're working on several other locations but can always use more.

Keep your eyes open, we'll be posting info on our first Metro area Appleseed very shortly. This shoot is Whisker's baby and he just got approval from the club, so as soon as details are finalized there will be an announcement right here. I expect this one to fill fairly quick also. Minnesotans have shown they are ready and eager to step up to Appleseed and I have a list of names just waiting to be notified of upcoming shoots.

I encourage you to sign up and attend an Appleseed. That will give you the experience you need to be able to answer all the questions that the folks at the Oakdale Gun Club are going to ask you when you make a proposal to them that they host an Appleseed shoot. O0

Thanks for stopping by, Dragonfly.  ;D::)

When you're sneaking accross the boarder, be sure you are in full RWVA dress, otherwise I cannot guarentee your saftey. ;)
Otherwise, if the vikings fans don't get you, the mosquitos surely will. ;D
Better yet; where some Packers appearal on the front side, and some RWVA stuff on the other.  That way as they're chasing after you, they'll see the Appleseed stuff, and maybe reallize football really isn't that important.  They will then decide to grow some Apple orchards! ;D

Did you sign on for Elk River yet?

With this being a national situation, we are glad to welcome you to Minnesota-'Land of 10,000 Appleseeds!'

Sparks1 suggested we send some thank you emails to Elk River Sportsman's Club.  Great idea.  contact@ersportsman.com

Is anyone on this board a member of the Elk River Sportsman's Club?  I'd like to discuss setting up another shoot for the summer.

Just a Buckeye checking in.

Will you have any shoots near Minneapolis yet this year?  Trying to find one fairly close for my son to attend.

Are any of you in the Twin Cities area?  EEven if no shoots close by, would love to visit when I drive up to Minneapolis later this year.

Thanks,

He's the VP of the United Northern Sportsmen's Club and plans to bring it up to his membership. I'm sure he'd be interested in your views and opinions of your Appleseed experience. He could probably use some help presenting it to his club members also. I'll PM his contact info if you're interested.

Anyway; I sent him out an intro letter, a SWAT reprint, and a Dillion as well.
I'll give him another day or so; and I'll follow up.
It probably wouldn't hold more than 25 shooters; but it's a start.

Yeah, if Buzz can work us into the SW corner, it'll be great! But we'll still have about half the State left to work on. If you look at the area north of a line from Marshall thru Elk River to Duluth, it still leaves an awful lot of Minnesotans in the dark and unaccounted for.

Welcome aboard, Buzz!

Keep an eye on them Iowans down there...  Their relative silence makes me wonder whether they're up to something.
There's also the possibility that good ol' Wisconsinois attempts to cross the Muddy Mississippi to our south.  Forcing us to put our backs to Canada!

Hi, FreedomV from Rochester checking in.  I was able to attend Sunday of the first Rochester AS and then go to the Lacrosse AS June 26/27 A few of the others from Rochester were close to their patch and will make it in August, I need more practice and plan on working and fine tuning until I can be consistent.

The line should be full in Rochester Aug 21/22 I hope I will be able to go to Winona also.
I have two proper freedom practice rifles now.

LUCK? Don't need it. All you need is a little determination and a willingness to listen to those 'orange hats' stalking the firing line behind you.

Good Luck! O0

I've also heard rumors that she's been pretty much beating up on everyone during the club's practice sessions at the range, so she's continuing to "walk the walk". O0

Okay, I'm checking in!
Sorry it has taken me so long but it's all a little confusing :wb:, the site I mean.

A little intro from me to you. My name is Laura, but I go by Goofy ever since my little sister pasted ducktape that said "Goofy" on my back at the Appleseed and then I scored rifleman. I am in the rifleman list as Toth, Goofy/Laura. I don't mind the name so I go by Goofy as well as Laura and woodyandcandi, my sign in name, but is to long to say, but I don't mind if you go by that either. Take your pick.
My father took me to the April 18-19th Appleseed where I scored a 217 my second day.

Alright down to business. What else do I need to be doing?

1. Read instructor manual
2. Read Fred's rifleman guide
3. I finally got the Paul Revere book and am reading that

What am I missing?

I would appreciate anyone's help and input. I have started things a bit late, but am going full bore from here on in.

Goofy (aka Laura, woodyandcandi)

Hey everyone,
I just got back from the '300' shoot in Illinois this weekend and I decided it was time to get on the forum. The '300' was my third apple seed, as I had attended the Hinckley shoot in August as well as the most recent Winona shoot. I'll probably be going to the next apple seed in Duluth, so I'll probably see some of you there. :)

My screen name is 5-stitch. Those of you who were in Marshall, MN  on the 11th and 12 know why.

It was the first AS for both me and my son and we both thorough enjoyed ourselves! We will be back later this year...I think the one on Oct 30-31. But there was talk of maybe adding some more events that are not on the schedule yet...anything happening there? Is the best place to check on the official AS map?

A special thanks to Sparks for lending me his really nice Ruger for Sunday. We went out and bought a couple as soon as we got home. Got our slings from Kevin, at the event, and have ordered USMC jackets from the store.

Great bunch of people. Love your dedication...and thanks again, Mary, for taking me to the ER.

Hello 5-stitch and welcome to the forum!
I too have bled for the second amendment - for me it was the recoil from friends massive handgun (one of those single shot .30 cals) that got me.   :P  Oh man I had no idea how a little wound could bleed!
I am glad you are OK and even had a chance to run Sparks amazing rifle. Sounds like you are all setup now with all the equipment you'll need!  (Did you upgrade your stock ruger sights too?)
Look forward to meeting you at an upcoming AS!

5-stitch...welcome!! I see you got some Rugers and Javaguy has asked about upgrading sights. What he means about those is the TECH Sights. They are much better than factory stock and give you a longer sight radius. muy bueno !!!! You will notice that the charging handle is awkward to use as compared to mine. Mine has been altered by doing some minor filing. Rimfirecentral.com has information on this. It is the quintessential place to go for 10/22 information.

Glad to hear you will be back.

I've already posted a couple of other places, but here's my official MN check-in.

My 13-year-old son and I attended Hinckley Nov 27-28. It was cold, but went well. We are both planning to come back in the spring and hopefully get our rifleman patches after practicing dry firing over the winter.

I've ordered the Paul Revere's Ride book. Is there an Appleseed manual available with all the info in it? It would be nice to have a spiral-bound reference.

Thanks for all of your dedication and hard work in putting these Appleseeds on! I will do what I can to get more people involved. I will try to get some of my friends to join us either in the spring or summer next year.

The hardest thing is to get people to understand it's not a militia. The overall cultural social conditioning has been very anti-gun for a long time, and then talking about the American Revolution makes people wonder...but once you go to an Appleseed, then you see it's a very positive organization. I would sum it up as promoting an awareness of the uniqueness of American freedom, what it cost our ancestors to get us that freedom, and doing "real" stuff like shooting well, getting off the couch, and participating in the political process is much better than being an apathetic zombie TV watcher and couch potato. Would you say that's accurate?

New to the program, haven't been to a shoot yet, hope to make one soon, even if it's in subzero weather.  About me:  I've lived in MN most of my life, am an avid trapper, hunter, fisherman and shooter.  Been attending a lot of CMP shoots in the last few years, hope to pick up some pointers on shooting, sharpen my skills, get in some more trigger time and hopefully make a difference.

Also, to anybody in the Monticello area, I'm a member at Monti Rod and gun and can bring guests to the line if anybody's up for some winter practice.  I was recently voted in as an active member and am gaining clout in the club.  We have an active group interested in this kind of shooting.  I hope to approach membership about hosting a shoot this summer.  Looking forward to meeting some fine folks.

Sound's great!  Welcome to the forum!

Hello all,
I live in Bloomington MN and support the efforts of the RWVA.  Have recommended this excellent program to all of my shooting friends.  It is difficult to get better training and the price cannot be beaten.
As much as the marksmanship training, I really enjoy the history lessons.  I think this is an excellent way to promote and preserve our legacy of liberty.
Just finished an excellent Appleseed in Superior Wi.  Ably led by Aftermath with the help of Mario and Dominic.  Beautiful weather at a very nice range. This is my second Appleseed, the first being in Rochester in May.  I managed to qualify as a Rifleman for the second time this weekend, but my skills had gotten rusty already in just a couple months.  I really wish I could find a range here in the Twin Cities where I could lay out my mat and practice.
Thanks again for your help and support this weekend.

Good ranges are hard to find!

Thanks for checking in with the kind words.  I've been too busy to play around online in the past couple weeks, but I did start the AAR - http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=41948.0
Hopefully, Privateer will check in with some pics!

I'm a transplant from WI to Madison, MN. I had been very involved in the past, but due to health problems I had to cut back. Mostly recovered now, and found a group of guys wanting to do Appleseed. We have a new young gunsmith in our town, which everyone is excited about.

Howdy all,

I've been reading up on the site and it looked like a good group to get involved in.  I'm hoping to both get to shoot myself and also to get my kids involved.  One item that looks promising is that I'm only an hour from both St. Cloud and Alexandria.  I'm guessing thing will start to stir once spring comes on, but I look forward to learning.

Hi all,
Just heard about Appleseed this morning. Wow, where have I been?  :slap:

Originally from SoMpls, now living in Plymouth. Got my first rifle training in 1962 at the tender age of 10 (anybody remember that VFW post with a range, right by Lake Calhoun where the USS Minneapolis mast is?). Time to ramp it up! I think this is a wonderful initiative, a big thanks to everybody involved.

And yup, I plan on attending the event this coming May in Austin.

This MN girl is currently living in Texas but still has family in MN.  I've been planting seeds and 2020 is the year to put some lead down range with the relatives.  Look forward to working with you very soon.

We'll see you on the trail soon!   We have 1 Shoot confirmed in MN for 2020 (April 18-19th in Monticello).  I am working on getting some more locations around the metro area if I can, if not Monticello Sportsman Club has been great to work with and I anticipate at least a couple more events there for 2020 too

I'm checking in from the Twin Cities. I did a couple matches in Chaseburg, WI last year, and I am hoping to do some shooting this year if ranges open up again.
