Title: AR500 Steel D-Targets
Post by: Aromatic on November 29, 2010, 10:39:45 PM
3/8" with two 5/8" mounting holes.  Cut with plasma.

4/5/V rings only.

If we can drum up an order for 39 targets, the price is $130 + shipping.

Post a reply with the number of targets you are interested in and your state.

If we reach the magic number I will send out a PM with payment info.  I am not going to make any money doing this.  Shipping will be the actual shipping and hopefully we can use our vast AS network to our advantage.

I ordered two samples and will post pictures when they arrive.

Thanks to those who provided electronic copies of the target.

Please check the OP for updated information.  Here are some pictures of the actual targets.  The steel is a little wider at the shoulder and a little narrow in the neck/head (compared the the official AS  FD AQT).

Here are these targets set up on a portion of the KD line at The Whittington Center.
They are awesome for KD after you gather any paper data needed.
There are 2 black ones at the 200M line (to the left of the target backer w. 3 squares) and a white one at the 300M berm (to the right of the target backer w. 3 blk. squares.)

1 other suggestion / comment.  The guys at MGM where I got my squares said holes in AR500 should be oval.  Something about round holes wanting to crack to the edge easier? ? ?  Also, you might ask about keeping them in a bit farther from the edge of the plate.

I'm no metal guy...just passing on some things you might want to investigate.

I will ask about the neck area.  It would help if I had an electronic copy to give him though.  I provided the only electronic copy that I had.  Does anyone know who is in charge of getting the paper targets printed?  It would be ideal if we could get the "official" electronic version.

These are not cut yet, so now is the time to request changes.  I agree with moving the holes in a little bit.  I will ask about the oval holes.

Also, if anyone knows a moderator, can you ask them to move this thread to a location where everyone can post?  I already PMed Deacon.

Right now it is looking like this group buy will close Friday at 5PM CST.  If we do not reach the 39 targets, I will send a PM asking for approval of the higher price.

We can do whatever you guys want. The ones I cut for Nick were directly from a file that he provided, I simply added the holes. Here lies the problem..The pricing above is based on the file that I already have. I have these nested together so tightly that changing the neck area will result in a price increase. Without the new sizing established I cannot quote you any firm numbers, but looking at the existing nests a change could result in the loss of up to a half dozen or so targets out of the 39 piece quantity. This would result in roughly a $25 price increase per piece. We can go down that road to verify, but we will need to agree on a revised drawing.

Please advise how you would like to proceed on this point.

In response to this, I happen to be a metal guy :cool2:

I have never heard this or seen anything to back it up. The only real reason to use a slot in any production part is to account for any variety in tolerance in an assembly. As far as the metal is concerned, A hole is a slot is a square is a oval. They all will affect the metal in the same way. With that being said, we can change the size/shape/location of the holes to anything you guys want. It will not affect the price. Just come to an agreement as a group and I will draw up the change for approval.

If you guys have any questions at all, please feel free to ask away!

I must at this time admit that I have yet to attend an Appleseed event....I know we in Indiana have a strong group, and I know a few of the people involved from the local group from other sites and the gun shows. (Joshua Streiff and Dave Dorsett come to mind) It is on my to-do list. I have heard nothing but wonderful things!

I appreciate what you guys do!!

I say that we stick with the current dimensions.  The head and shoulder area is truncated on the paper target so I think it was adjusted to fit the paper.  I attached the two electronic formats I have.  I do not have the ability to open them.

My google-fu is weak so if anyone can find the actual "mil-spec" drawings for the D-target, please share them with the group.

Plus, we are Riflemen and a slightly smaller target is good practice.

For me the two bolts are the cheap part of this project.

I believe the larger heads will be a bit more resiliant when they are attacked with large caliber rifles.

I asked for 5/8" with the intention of using 1/2" bolts.  The only reason I picked that size is because it seems to be somewhat of a standard.

If the holes are 3/8" then the bolts will have to be slightly smaller...  You can use a smaller bolt in a 5/8" hole if you want.

If others want to go to a smaller hole, post or send me a PM.

The holes are actually 9/16" with the intention of using 1/2" hardware. I actually have a suggestion here for the group to consider.....switch to square holes. If we switch to square holes you can use carriage bolts. Carriage bolts have proven to last longer as their rounded head deflects some, where hex heads absorb. Yeah, the hardware may cost an extra buck or two per target, but it is better than walking downrange to fix a down target! Just something to consider. As I have said before, hole changes will not effect the price. We just need to find a common pattern for everyone.

Also, if I am counting correctly.....Are we at 38?!?!?

One more and we can rock this out! :sos:

Now is probably a good time to discuss collection of funds? Unless you guys have a better idea, probably easiest is to have Aromatic give me an official list and then you guys can call/email in to arrange payments for your individual targets? If we could get everything paid up this weekend that will let me get going on Monday.

PP/USPS MO/Visa/MC/Discover are all accepted.

You guys do buy from a place that sells bulk, right? Like a Ranch and Home supply or something of that nature? Should be less than $2 a pound. Last time I bought hardware to take to a show they were on sale and I walked out with hardware sets for about 30 targets for about $5. ^:)^

Square holes are not fine with me, the sharp corner creates a stress riser and if/when the target cracks it will crack out from that corner and go to the closest edge.  A round hole does not give an easy position to start a crack.  It will still crack there but not as fast as a square hole.  With a 9/16 hole you can still use a 1/2 carriage bolt, might have to flatten the corners a little to get it to seat flush.

I'm with Milt (duc-dog).  Preference for round holes, 9/16" as previously stated.  I too, plan to use 1/2" bolts which are what you need for this kind of weight and energy it is going to absorb from battle rifles.

Finding Grade 8 Carriage bolts is a real booger.  I've tried.  Much easier to just get grade 8 standard bolts.

But either way is not a deal breaker for me.  AROMATIC, you're driving the train.

I dont really care either way.  How about we stick with the 9/16" round holes.  Those who want to use carriage bolts can still ues them in the round holes.

I will take silence for agreement.  So if you have an issue please post.  Sorry for the back and forth...

I have been unable to find any hardness ratings of Grade 8. While they have an alloy composition, they are designed for increased strength. If I find any technical data I will toss it up in here.

Grade 8 bolts have a core rockwell hardness rating on the C scale of 35 or so. This translates into roughly a 331 score for Brinell, which is what AR plate is rated on. Grade 8 bolts are rated between T1 and AR400. On paper, any centerfire round will damage it, as well as some pistol depending on distance.

Just a thought, you might want to keep the group buy open until next weekend to give as many instructors as possible a chance to participate.

Most websites when they run a group buy have it open for 2-4 weeks.

The group buy was for exactly 39 targets.  We have reached the 39 targets.  I can start a waiting list in case people back out.

Bobcat has the CAD file so instructors can contact him directly for their targets.

Anyone wanting to get on the waiting list, please PM me.  I think this is the best price you will see for a target like this.

As Aromatic pointed out, this always had a target number of 39. I had three remnants here that fit 8, 13, and 18 pieces. Combination of those numbers are how we came to the price breaks that we had.

There can be more targets made, we just felt that since this buy reached it's intended goal, we should wrap it up. We can always start another buy!

Alright....TheEditor has contacted me, but still looking for word from EEL.

I have put these targets in queue on our burners. I expect them to be on the road to Aromatic on/by the 22nd. There will be 31 targets in that package, while 8 are staying with me for either local pickup or friendly shuttle.

Thanks for the participation!

Targets were completed yesterday!   ^:)^

They will ship out to arrive to Aromatic after the first of the year as our receiving facilitator will not be able to accommodate until then. The 8 targets for the 'local' guys will be available for pickup tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks again for the smooth buy guys!

George63 just left my place with the targets for the Illinois and Minnesota guys.
Please contact him to arrange pickup.

The other 31 targets will be hitting the road the end of next week so they can be in Texas the first of the year.

If anyone else that didn't get in on this needs some, let me know. I will be making a stock cut here in the next week or two and can run some more then. I probably will not be able to do it for the same price, but I will do what I can for you.

Thanks everyone for making this happen!!

You all have a great Christmas weekend!

The 31 targets should be hitting Texas any day, if they haven't already. I know our plan was to ship them out so they would arrive early this week.

If anyone else needs any of these, or the smaller AQT versions, or anything else, I am making a cut in the next few days to get my inventory ramped up for a show next week. This is a great time for quick turnaround on custom/non-stocked targets. Just let me know what you need and I will draw them up for approval!

How much are the AQT sized versions?

I bought a 4" and 16" square from you a while back and have been pleased.

Didn't have the drawings to do any of this fancy stuff.

Nah...sold off the 50 BMG to fund other projects.  Got tired of punching 1000 yard paper with a benchrest gun at $3.50 a shot with reloads.  My 338 Lapua is a lot cheaper.

I actually have some customers that use 3/8" with success. They are usually shooting no closer than 300-400. I have a plate we shot at 100 that I put out at shows. Only issue we have ever run into is the one customer who shot his torso at 40yds with his 7mm RUM #)

what do you figure is the cost of a handload for the .338 LM (having to buy or replace the components at current prices)

300gr .338 diameter Sierra Matchking, $0.60
Federal 215M Primer, $0.04
89gr RL25 Powder, $0.22
Lapua Brass Wear, 10% wear per firing, $0.20

Looks like about $1.06/round.  Not too bad, considering what that saves you over factory ammo at $6-7/round.

I looked hard at going with a .338 LM, but my guess on the reloads was about 1.5$ so I went with an oddball to get to about 1200 yd 7mm RSUM, nice BC in the heavy bullets, all around decent compromise. My .223 reloads are at @.17 ,  .308 @ .35 and the 7mm RSUM @.70   I figure they are proportional, each time you double the effective range, the price doubles. At 1.05 the .338 LM is quite a bargain, for years some weatherby loads were the standard for over 1000 yds and very $$$

BTW the IL crew shot the new steel D's in a steady snow at the end of the IBC Jan 15-17 at 400 yds the snow in the air all but obscured the targets but we still got some hits and had a fine time

Title: Re: AR500 Steel D-Targets

The rimfire walkers themselves are $40 each. I also have larger/heavier/ar500 ones for centerfire at $85 each. The paddles on the rimfire walkers are 2-1/2", while the larger rifle jack is 3/8" AR500 and has 4" paddles. It acts to .223 the way the rimfire walker acts with 22lr.

Looks like I could ship 3 or so of the smaller ones to you for $20. It would be a little less if you wanted one or two, but not by much. Let me know how many of what you are interested in and I'll shoot you an official quote! I will need you email, though.

Oh, and I can ship both size walkers together, FYI O0
Title: Re: AR500 Steel D-Targets

OK Texas, after watching the "walker" video I would like to get one.  Shipping for three walkers is $20.  So approx. $47 per for rimfire models.  Anyone else who I see regularly interested?  Need at least 3 to order.  Shipped to me and I will distribute or vice versa.  Distribution would be face to face as I am not able to re-ship.

Great NPOA shift practice and a lot less walking to see where you hit.

That's too cool. Completely independently, I made up a 1/2" AR400 version about 6 months ago to shoot at a friend's place.

Here's a youtube vid of friend's wife nailing it at 100m with a 30-06:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt7jYYSLK2U

I've since made up 7 more out of 3/8" AR500.

They have not been cleaned and painted yet. I'm painting the side with the scoring rings and grooves black with white lines and numbers, the smooth non-printed side plain old redcoat. I used a waterjet at work so I could blast the lines into the front of the face.

Looks good NHale.

We've considered putting some etching on the surface of targets as well, just were unsure of the longevity of the channels. Between paint and lead buildup on target I'm not convinced it would stay around long enough to justify the initial cost increase. Albeit we haven't tested that line of thought out....

I'd be curious how well yours hold up.

The problem I've run into so far is that if I'm not extremely careful, the grooves easily get too deep. I ran these at 200 inches per minute (about our machine's max) with abrasive. It looks like crap at the starts and stops and where the program insists on putting a dwell. I could run it without abrasive much slower, and that should take care of the stupid dwell issue, but that'll probably double the process time and double the cost of jetting the part.

I'll drag these prototypes up to the Ramseur RBC in August.

Here's my shot up 1/2" AR400 target:

I'm gonna put hooks on the backs of the new ones so you can only shoot the chain off. (Yeah, I learned my lesson with rope.) Also, by hanging it from the back, it'll tip the face down slightly so it's less likely to come fly back at you. (This was hit with 30-06, .22Mag, and .22LR.)

Me too!  I bet Two Wolves and I can work it out so that he just adds a +1.  That may make shipping easier.

Should be able to use the Appleseed network again, right?

Shoot me s PM or email and we'll get this moving for you.

What type of prices are we looking at Kimball?  Is it possible to switch over to a single square mounting hole?

Are scaled down sizes an option as well?  May need a few more trophies :)

How about one sized to fit in a large flat rate box?

Those look interesting.  What's a shipped total around?

I would be interested in 1 or 2 also, depending on needs to make a group buy.  I would like holes pre-drilled though from Bobcat Steel.  Will it still be in the $130 plus shipping per plate Bobcat?  I will also send pics of a stand Two Wolves made for mine.

This will depend on quantities, sizes, and if we can use the network again.

Changing holes up shouldn't be an issue, but if we are doing a larger batch I'd like to keep 'options' limited as it could make the shipping a bit of a headache.

Anything is an option for size!

I think we should be able to get near that mark again perhaps? Just depends on quantities. We've been making them here and there for guys as one-offs for $160 a pop, so the number should be somewhere between.

One square hole allows one piece of fire hose to suspend and one wrench to tighten bolt :)

I made a post on our Facebook page to try and drum up some more interest. Please share as you see fit to spread the word. No reason to limit this to Texas, we had them going all directions last time.

Any more interest in this? I have heard from most of you, but I see a few above you have expressed interest without contacting me.

Looks like the interest is in full size and half size versions from the emails I have shared with those involved.

I have enough verbal commitments that I am ready to proceed with this.

Targets will be 3/8" AR500 laser cut with holes.
$140 on the full size. $40 on the half size. Hole options are going to be either two holes as shown below, or a single hole centered in the 'head'. Customer's choice on holes. We will be making a cut to get ready for an upcoming show, so we will leave this open until August 11th. Payments will need to be received by then. Targets will ship out the week of August 26th.

Targets can be shipped or picked up. These will be ready to pick up at the Indy 1500 Aug 23-25th. If you want to do group shipping, please arrange that amongst yourselves and let us know where to ship. Ideally the group shipments would be treated with a single order/payment.

We will start taking orders/payments on Monday.

Thanks!

Slapped that thing around a bit, didn't you?

I don't want you shooting at my steel, you'll ruin the paint!

FWIW, this is how I do it, very adaptable to tall grass and bush areas, I make it hard to find these things for target detection classes,,, They hold up well, 3/4 inch Grade 60 ReBar, 3/8 chain, 7/16 bolts, this system puts a cant on the target to deflect shrapnel down and it disperses energy real well so as not to damage targets over the long haul,,,

I really like that setup sgtrock, unfortunately it would have to come along with a case of dynamite to get it in the ground in this part of TX; and with the color of dirt around here, when you can find it, you cannot see our setup at 200 yards with irons.  It was an interesting discovery by zonkertx and myself at the range one day.  Who would have thought orange paint is actually camo.  We also leave the bolts loose when shooting so it has some give and better sound.

Aromatic, Two Wolves bladed the flat iron on the front side to deflect any hits on the legs, which amazingly have yet to be hit.

I also carry a 36 volt hammer drill for the stubborn areas with sand stone or shale rock,, if you have granite or stuff as hard as that, explosives would be the way to go, sort of an added bonus of a day at the range,,,

I'd be curious how well yours hold up.

I was shocked at how much better the AR500 did than the AR400. Basically a pinhead-sized dent with M2 Ball at 200 yards. The etching actually held up extremely well. I ran them at 200 inches per minute with garnet abrasive. That put a nice channel without affecting the heat treatment.

But... and here's the kicker...was the etching necessary? Not really. It might have upped the cool factor, but like so many other things, did not really have utilitarian function. Yes, you can score them, but then you have to run down to the target line with a can of spray paint between rounds. Imagine that would get old pretty quick. Also, if you totally load the target up with paint, you can start filling in the channels, and you'd need to drag a nail or something across it to clean them out. It really looked much better unpainted, or with the thin grey primer, not the nasty thick stuff. That junk was like Bondo. Things did ring like a freakin' bell though, and a good time was had by those that shot them. Boom...tang! Boom...tang!

Bottom line: Cool=Yes
Practical=Not so much

I bought my KD steel from BobCat Steel on this group buy way back in 2010.

They get used regularly and have been part of our annual instructor KD event for many years now.

Still holding up without any damage or cracking after all of these years.

Thanks for a great product.
